I own a 2005 chrysler pt cruiser with 40,000 miles on it. the warranty is up and i just found out that the front axle bearing is shot. my mechanic was very shocked to discover this on such a new car and said it was very unsafe. i am very upset with chrysler since i have come to find out that this is a chronic problem with the pt cruiser and happens on every model and year. i have read about many exact same complaints from owners of this vehicle.

I bought a 2005 PT base w/ A/T,A/C,etc... right after the warranty went, so did the drivers side wheel bearing. Now at 83K, the passenger side bearing is gone. I did some online research and found that I am now another member of the PT cruiser front wheel bearing fan club. Before this adventure, my worst complaint was the gas mileage. My late parent's 1969 Toyota Corona had a 1900cc engine copied from the WWII Willy's Jeep, and an automatic transmission cloned from Chevy's Powerglide, with factory A/C it got 25 mpg. My '05 PT similarly equipped, is 36 years newer, and got a whoppin' 19 to 21 mpg new. After breaking it in it still got 19-21 mpg with correct tire pressure and everything as it should be. After switching to synthetic oil the mpg is up to 21-23 mpg. Gotta loge the marvels of modern technology...
