1. ford firestone tire recall: 12/2/02 all tires replaced as per recall requirements. mileage: 15750. 2. friday, 4/21/2006: during a road trip this past weekend, my right front tire shredded. i heard thudding noises, pulled off the i-75, checked around my 2001 ford expedition, was unable to see anything wrong. however a few miles later, i realized something was seriously wrong and pulled off of the freeway. i called 911 sometime between 3 and 3:15 pm 4/21/06 for roadside assistance. tim the towman towed my vehicle off the freeway to a nearby gas station. there he observed that the right front tire had shredded. the shredding process caused damage as follows: a) right front bumper now dangles because screws sheared off apparently; b) tire casing needs to be resecured, since it was flapping. c) there may be additional damage to the undercarriage as well as cables. est. mileage: 47600. 3. tim the towman replaced the shredded tire with my full-size spare. he used twine to temporarily support the rf bumper. he temporarily secured the tire casing. the following monday, i called ford customer no-service. they said that a local dealership would need to corroborate my story before they could determine whether ford was liable to replace the shredded tire (and possibly replace all of the others, as well), and to pay for the repairs needed on the front bumper and casing. the tallahassee ford dealership has a poor reputation, so i was permitted to take my expedition to the lincoln-mercury dealership. after hearing my story and examining my vehicle, the service manager said that ford offered no warranty on the replacement tires. even if they had replaced defective tires with defective tires, they did not stand behind their product. he offered to give me a discount on michelin tires (four) to replace the continental tires. he said there was little tread left on the remaining tires. these tires have slightly over 30,000 miles on them.  view

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at any speed the antilock brakes fail. there was a nhtsa recall # 05v379000 concerning the antilock brakes however this did not correct the problem. the dealer determined the brake pump ran continually causing the brakes to fail. this was not part of the recall.  view

Dt*: the contact stated the electronic mirrors re-adjust without warning. the mirrors should maintain the last setting, but require re-adjustment every time the vehicle is driven. occasionally the mirrors re-adjust while driving making it difficult to change lanes. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer twice for repairs. the dealer replaced the mirrors and made adjustments to the electrical unit. the problem was only alleviated temporarily by the repairs and the mirrors began malfunctioning again a year ago. ... the mirrors will self adjust the settings. while driving the contact looked in the mirrors to change lanes and they were out of adjustment. had to constantly adjust the mirrors prior to changing lanes. also, when shutting the vehicle off, and restarted it, had to adjust the mirrors. the mirrors will not hold the set adjustment. in addition, the tailgate could only be opened with the remote, there was no other way to open the tailgate. in a situation where the contact's only exit from the vehicle was from the inside, could not open manually from the inside.  view

1997 dodge caravan 3.3 liter v6 with 93000 miles. started vehicle and the starter mechanism locked onto the flywheel or failed to disengage, making a screeching noise. turned ignition off and engine shut down but starter kept cycling engine. removed keys from ignition and van was still attempting start by turning the engine over and over. strong smell of burning electrical components as the starter continued to cycle engine, unabated, with keys out of ignition. hood was popped and battery cables were disconnected shutting the starter off. the starter cranked the engine, nonstop, without keys in ignition, for approximately 10 minutes. the only way to stop this was to disconnect the battery. upon immediate inspection of the starter it was found to be red hot. the cables/wires coming out of the starter were red hot and smell of burning plastic filled the air. the starter was removed and found to be original equipment ( with chrysler corporation logo intact). the starter was found to be locked in the extended position and would not retract. a new starter was purchased and installed due to the original being inoperable. old starter was turned in to pep boys in raynham, ma for core refund. there is no doubt that if the battery was not disconnected, the starter would have continued to start the engine until it eventually(starter)overheated enough to ignite the wires and start an engine fire.  view

Sirs; the other day i was driving down the road and noticed my daughter doing what just about every woman does. she had her legs on the dash board. then it occurred to me, if a deer or other car popped out in front of us and i hit them, the air bag would come out, and it would throw her legs behind her head. have you done any test on this and how much of an injury she could of had. i have never heard of any report on this. she had her seat belt on, but with the speed the air bag would come out, i think it would kill her by pushing her knees into her head or even break her back. can you tell me if there was any test made like this.  view

With no advanced warning signs, my 2001 saturn l-200 had the timing chain spontanteously break. all oil changes and maintenance was done at the regular intervals. because saturn designed this as an interferance engine, the broken timing chain caused permanent damage to the valves in the motor. no one was hurt as a result of this engine malfunction. the failure was corrected by replacing the blown engine with a low mileage salvage engine at the cost of $2606 to me. i am the original owner and my vehicle only has 69,000 miles.  view

Excessive engine cooling fan noise upon morning first use. if you let the car sit overnight and then startup the car, back up out of the driveway, and accelerate normally down the residential street, the cooling fan sounds like an airplane propeller chopping the air. the performance of the vehicle (a v8) seems sluggish as the engine fights to spin the fan at every increasing engine rpm. the noise is excessive and unnerving. once you come to a stop sign and the engine slows to idle, the fan resumes normal operating mode and no longer spins at engine rpm speeds. this is a very repeatable event. 3 out 5 mornings i have to deal with this. ford motor customer service says they cannot do anything until the dealer identifies the problem. the car has been at the dealer for several days and they are unable to experience the problem. there is only one thing that can be wrong here is the fan clutch. but until the problem stays broken, and it wont as it goes away once you go to idle, they will not repair the problem under warranty. my concern is multifold. i am concerned for the safety of others as it is unnatural for the cooling fan to be spinning at engine rpm. if the fan were to disintegrate, who will be in the way of the high speed fragments? i am concerned about the damage that would occur to the vehicle if the fan were to let loose. i am concerned that the fan's life is being reduced and will suffer premature failure. the dealer refuses to review tsb 17163 -- excessive engine cooling fan noise. (nhtsa id #10004057) until they experience the problem. the dealer seems to be uncooperative and chooses to ignore the customer's complaint.  view

2003 acura tl type-s experiencing excessive wear on only the driver's side front tire. car was taken to an acura dealer for service. upon inspection of the vehicle, the acura mechanic indicated that the problem has been seen previously on several other vehicles of the same make/model and that the problem was related to the traction control system (vsa) allowing slippage of the front driver's side tire during right turns. acura stated that there was no resolution available and the only recourse was to rotate the tires on a more frequent basis. tire dealer was asked if there were any known issues with the tire itself (michelin) and indicated that there were no service notifications issues from the manufacturer. the wear on this tire is heavily accelerated and was only noticed on a routine examination of the vehicle. based on the statements by the acura mechanic, i believe there to be a problem with the traction control system that allows the front driver's side tire to slip, thereby causing the excessive wear. given winter driving conditions, this slippage was increased due to the loss of road traction. if unnoticed, the tire would have failed (with less than 28000 miles) potentially causing significant damage to the vehicle. the worn tire is available for inspection and pictures of the tire in comparison to the passenger side front tire are available upon request.  view

Flickering tail lights. recent models of cadillac (e.g. dts), use led tail lights. on this car, they flicker at about 50 hz. i work in the software industry and can clearly see computer monitors flickering at 60 hz or below. at night, and especially while in motion, these tail lights are extremely distracting, and occasionally nauseating. i have noticed this beginning to occur on more types of vehicles each year. i am very concerned about the effect on safety and comfort should this trend be allowed to continue. i believe the dot should mandate that led lights on all vehicles have a refresh rate of 100hz or greater in each mode (dim: tail light, bright: brake light...). there are examples of led tail lights that do not flicker, in particular, most large semi-trailers do not have this flicker effect.  view

The 1st -dec. 23 2004. my husband and i was traveling on the interstate and the car began to slow down. my husband pulled to the side of the road and there was smoke coming from the brakes. after getting out and inspecting for problems we got back in the car and attempted to proceed forward and the car would not move. we called the tow truck. by the time car got to the service department, they were able to drive the vehicle. when they did their inspection, they could not find any problems. we went a week later and pick the car up and drove away. within 2 weeks, a similar problem arose, but the car was still drivable; therefore we did not take it in, but did call to inform the dealership of the problem. in february 2006, the problem came again and the car had to be towed to the nearest dealer. initially there was no problem found, but i requested they check the brakes and it was a faulty master cylinder. this was replaced. within 2 months, we were pulling from the driveway and it appeared my husband had mistakenly put his foot on the gas, however we were sure it was the brakes and the engine revved up and continued to move forward. we called and reported and they said we could bring it in for service., however they rely on the computer to indicate the problem. no problem existed based on the computer. as recent as saturday, april 8, 2006, my son and i was driving and i was pulling behind a line of cars that were stopping at a stop light and the engine revved as i put my foot on the brakes. the car did not stop until i quickly put it in park. we took the car in today, monday, april 10 and again, no problem being found. i called the hyundai customer service, who is investigating the incident. my concern is that we know that there is a problem, but since we now rely solely on computer to locate problems we may never get the problem solved. i hope it doesn't take an accident to get this problem resolved.  view

I was driving in my subdivision about three weeks ago, when suddenly the driver's side airbag in my 1996 pontiac grand am went off. i immediately pulled over, turned on the emergency lights, and my fiance and i got out of the car. about thirty seconds later, the passenger side air bag goes off. i was very fortunate that this did not occur on a main road or on the freeway because someone could have been seriously hurt. my fiance's mother and i have been in contact with general motors for about two weeks now. they have not been very helpful with my situation, and as of right now, i will probably have to pay for the repairs out of pocket, even though there was no accident, and i am not to blame for this. i have read similar cases on the internet, and this may be due to a corroded wire in the air bag system. gm should really consider calling a recall on these airbag systems before their customers get seriously hurt or worse as a result of gm's negligence.  view

Had wheel cylinders replaced -- left rear in 2004 and right rear in dec 2005. went for oil change today and asked the mechanic to pull of rear wheels because the brakes didn't feel right to me. right rear was soaked in brake fluid and left rear had just started to leak. right rear had also started to seize up due to brake fluid coating the shoes. wheel cylinders shouldn't fail after only 4 months -- and even 2 years seems like it is a short period of time. have had other cars and never had this issue. also, front rotors seem to warp out really fast -- as in once a year. i drive car normal and am not harsh on the brakes.  view

I had just pulled out of my driveway recently and heard a loud crack come from the rear of the car. i thought i hit something, so i stopped the car and went out and looked at the rear suspension. i had heard of the front springs cracking, but not the rears, but i was surprised to find the rear spring on the left side of the car had cracked. having taken automotive classes before, i was able to replace the springs myself with a new set from ford, bypassing the dealer because they would not cover the cost of replacing the springs. this was an inconvenience for me at the time, and it ended up costing me money for a part that shouldn't have failed. i didn't think much of the part failure, and ford didn't help me much, so i did not report it. it wasn't until i talked to others who have had the same problems recently that i chose to report this to you at the nhtsa. i hope something is done to prevent future failures, it could be dangerous if i was on the highway or moving at a faster speed. the car is a 2000 ford taurus sel. i didn't think much of the failure at the time.  view

On march 06,06. exactly 2 months after taking delivery of a "quality checked preowned " 2004 ford ranger pickup from a local dealership while driving to work at 4:30 am s/b on the i 15 suddenly, without warning the vehicle veered hard left slammed into the center gaurdrail then flipped and rolled causing vehicle to be a classified as a total loss by insurance co. after inspection of vehicle i was drawn to the fact that the front left wheel assembly including brake rotor and hub were detached from vehicle and after further inspection it appears that the wheel bearing retaining assembly is at fault. the spindle is flat on both top and bottom of the threaded tip where the where the axle nut threads should mesh and hold, but the threads of the nut are designed in such a manner as to not be continuous, but instead they are separated to where 2/4 s of the inside area is threaded and the other 2/4 s has no threads and are staggered in such a way as to allow the axle nut if allowed to spin at all even just 1/8 of a turn to pop off with little resistance except for the small looking cotter pin which came out in pieces maybe because the pressed metal castle nut wanna be which is of a loose fitting style could easily have worn the cotter pin with its rather sharp edges seemingly from just normal use and even more so if the wheel was not adjust perfectly or if the wheel seal was not seated perfectly which after some time would cause a more pronounced looseness in the whole assembly thus causing the aforementioned dangerous results. i was shocked when i saw the system used and i cannot for the life of me which i am lucky to still have understand how that design could be considered safe above other designs that are of solid materials with constant threads that would have to spin completely off many complete turns rater tan jus 1/8 to 1/4 of one turn. please would you look into this before other trucks make unannounced turns for the worse. thank you.  view

The air bag light of my 1998 infinity i-30 began flashing for no apparent reason. i noted two tsb concerning a manufacturer defect related to the seat harness triggering the air bag light in 1998/1999. i provided the tsb to my local infinity dealer in elk grove, ca who charged me $110 diagnostic charge to tell me what i already knew about the defect. to repair the air bag system, it will cost over $800 and they state my car is out of warranty. however, this problem has nothing to do with owner use or wear-and-tear. i believe this is a manufacturer design flaw the impacts passenger safety and should be repaired at their expense. can someone help me? thanks.  view

Compliant is that through my insurance provider i was alerted to two recalls that should be at least looked into on my auto. the first is the blower on the climate control began to work erratically and now it does not work at all. meaning that my defrosting does not work at all. the other and more serious is that the drivers side door latch sticks at smacks against the peg and does not latch properly or at all, unless the latch is manually lifted. both of these are recalls for other t-birds but somehow mine slipped through. vin is 1falp62w6th111113. if these are such common problems why weren't all the t-birds recalled? i am looking at over 600.00 to replace these parts. which is irritating when ford should be fixing it's known problems.  view

First the freeze plug blew out of the engine within 2 months of purchase (which took approx. 30 days for them to fix ) and then (and now ) i'm still running back and forth to the dealership complaining about the wind and water leakage in the front doors , the wind is sometimes so loud you have to yell at each other just to talk in the vehicle. the doors visibly shake while driving, allowing the wind and water in. and h.w. hunter dealership keeps saying there's nothing wrong with the truck. we let them test drive it alone which they did for 600 miles , and claim they heard nothing and then i drove while the district and service managers while in the truck with me they both stated that they could hear the wind but according to them that was normal. so i told they that the commercial advertised a smooth quite ride and this is not either . then once again i contacted chrysler and they said basically it is what it is and deal with it. i think after putting $18,500 down on this truck and still paying for it, it should be as advertised. not to mention the fact that the doors moving like they do has to be a safety issue , because they way they move i feel they are eventually they are going to fly off or something terrible like that. the date i'm using here is the date of the last time i took it in.  view

Car began to lose acceleration on 10-15-05 and would take a full 2 min to reach 55 mph with only minimal throttle depression (any more than only the least would cause the drive train to jerk and refuse to propel the car at all). if the car was pulled over and restarted the problem would correct itself for a while (sometimes the gap in between malfunctions would be several hours initially) but would always return. ran trouble codes and the oxygen sensor was initially faulty. replaced then the engine would idle erratically upon startup, but after a period of time (5-15 minutes) it would all of a sudden correct itself - racing the engine seemed to shorten the time period, but you would have to depress and quickly release the gas pedal in order to get the rpm's significantly high enough to facilitate the smooth operation. once the engine ran fine, it would operate well as long as the car was never shut off (it was ran on a journey of 1,000 miles and operated perfectly normal). the moment it was shut down, even for the briefest of spans, it would act in the same manner with the idle fluctuating wildly, but seemed to be prone to stalling when the engine was warm/hot. volvo was contacted and recommended dealer diagnosis to determine the scope of the problem. when the car was brought in for service, i was assured that it "could not possibly be the computer(etm)". however there was a software update installed (hmmmmm.....couldn't possibly, but lets adjust it....hmmmmmm ) which corrected the rough idle initially. only problem is now the car will not reach or exceed 4,000 rpm even with the car in park (not under load) and will stall jerk and refuse to accelerate under hard pedal pressure and will not drive above about 70 mph on the highway without protestation, loss of acceleration or jerking. all of the diagnostic trouble codes still indicate that the cylinders are wilding misfiring and i'm getting sick of trying to fix volvo's engineering problem.  view

2006 tundra problem accelerated rapidly away from a traffic light in order to merge with traffic, reaching a speed of 65 to 70 mph at that time. drove for about two miles, turned into my neighborhood and up my street. parked truck in driveway, no idiot lights at that time, gauges were normal. after about 20-30 minutes attempted to restart truck. it would crank strongly, begin to start, sputter and die. attempted several more times, with same result. it acted like it was not getting fuel. after 10-15 minutes of cool down, it still refused to start. finally managed to get it started by pumping gas pedal and repeatedly cranking. finally it caught, but required revving to stay running. at last it settled down to an idle. tundra problems continued: friday 4/14/06 accelerated gradually away from a stop light down an exit ramp and onto the highway. truck began hesitating or stumbling for about 30 sec., then smoothed out. saturday 4/15 /06 turned right and began accelerating up an incline with full load of passengers. truck began stumbling; acting like it was not getting fuel, upon coming to a traffic light, it stalled when i came to a stop. no check engine light came on, it was like i had turned off the key. managed to get it started, and it ran the rest of that evening without further incident. this occurred about 6:00 p.m. and the air temperature was in the low 80s. tuesday 4/18/06 was driving around the baltimore beltway at speed, when the engine began missing at a speed of approximately 65 mph. this continued for at least two, and possibly three minutes. traffic suddenly came to a complete stop. at this point, the engine died, and again there was no check engine light, the engine just turned off. 4/19/06 on the drive from owings mills to waldorf, i needed to pass a truck towing a boat. as i pressed on the gas, the engine began to stumble again and would not accelerate.  view

I would like to cite nhtsa campaign #05v399000. while driving my 2002 saab 9-5 6 cylinder on 4/20/2006 i began to experience rough operation and reduced power of the engine. i was a short distance from my destination where i parked thinking i would need to be towed. at first i thought my car was overheating because there seemed to be steam coming from under the hood but there was an odd smell. i went into the coffee shop i was visiting and within a minute or two i turned to check on my car and i saw that the interior was filled with smoke. i went outside and noticed sparks and flames coming from under the vehicle in the area of the back seat and i immediately called the fire department. they arrived and put out the fire under the car and in the back seat where the flames had burned through the carpet. i called a tow service and went back into the store to finish my coffee and wait for the tow truck. when i came back out i noticed that there was still smoke coming from under the hood so i called the fire department again to put out the remnants of the fire. the car was then towed to the nearest saab dealer which is in gainesville, florida, about 40 miles away. later that day i called the dealer to ask about the above referenced recall which i had discovered on the internet, and they told me that my particular car was not covered. in the letter of acknowledgement dated september 13, 2005 from gm to the nthsa, gm states that "a sustained vehicle fire is unlikely and gm knows of none." due to the exactness of my situation and the recall, i can only assume that gm now has at least one fire on record.  view

After the engine warmed up,the transmission began malfunctioning. when attempting to accelerate the gears would not change. (this could have been detrimental to my health as i must leave my housing subdivision and enter a four-lane highway!) within a few minutes the transmission had completely shut down. after turning the motor off and allowing the engine to cool, my husband was able to restart the car and drive it to our house. no warning signs were given to alert us to a potential problem. the vehicle had to be towed to the dealership where they inspected it and said the transmission had to be replaced. upon doing some research, i discovered that 2002 mdxs were recalled due to malfunctioning transmissions. do you think that there is a possibility that some of the 2003 models are equipped with the same transmissions? please note that scheduled maintenance was always completed at the dealership and that this vehicle was not used to tow anything. when considering all the facts, i believe that an investigation should ensue.  view

Loss of control while braking hard due to the location of the power seat controls. drivers hip pushes the seat belt buckle in to the drivers seat control switch. when braking hard, the switch is pushed forward, by the hip. this causes the seat to push the driver into the steering wheel. the event happened late at night with no traffic, so there was no damage. truck was not stopped in the desired location. we have removed the fuse to the seat motors to prevent this from happening again. truck should have an interlock that prevents the seat from operating with the transmission in drive.  view

1999 300m chrysler "steering wheel problems". we purchased the vehicle in 2000 at a used dealership with 30,000 miles, ever since we have been experiencing the same problem over and over again and cost us a lot of money. on one occasion where we were driving on the freeway all of sudden the steering wheel locked itself and luckily it was not busy on the road and safely pulled on the side. i took it to the chrysler dealer and pay $1400 to replace the whole steering wheel. as of today, again, the steering wheel looses its steering and it just keep rolling and it so loose. i contacted and did not want to assist in any way or even offer me a discount to fix it. they said warranty was up. i cannot believe the lack of attention from chrysler to my problem and i think its a safety issue here.  view
