Dt*: the contact stated the brakes lock up and have to be pumped to work properly. when the rear wheels were removed, the brakes fell apart. the front brake pads and shoes have been replaced twice. the rear brake pads, shoes, and drums have been replaced once. these components must be replaced every 20,000 miles. the dealership determined this is how the brakes were manufactured.  view

Dt*: the contact stated while approaching an intersection at 40mph the vehicle in front stopped short. when the brakes were depressed the vehicle seemed to accelerate rather than slow down. the contact swerved to avoid a direct rear end collision, but clipped the vehicle in the right rear bumper. both vehicles sustained only minor damage. the police filed a report at the scene. the contact experienced two previous failures with the brakes, but no accidents resulted in the other incidents. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but the problem could not be duplicated. however, the dealer replaced the brake pads.  view

1999 volkswagen passat 1.8l turbo engine with 71,000 miles stopped suddenly; then check-engine light came & car would not re-start. check-oil light had been intermittently on for 2-3 miles prior, but oil was checked and it was actually overfull. 803 miles prior, vw service dept had serviced car for check-engine light, and replaced turbo recirculation valve and hose. oil has been changed every 3000 miles since car was purchased used, with 30,000 miles, in feb. '04. vw service department claims failure was caused by engine becoming oil-starved due to sludge in oil take-up tube. sludge caused by not using synthetic oil, although it is not required. cam gear was damaged, leaving metal pieces throughout engine. entire engine, turbo and catalytic converter had to be replaced. vw denies any responsibility. parts may still be w/mechanic, i certainly do not have facilities or desire to store an entire ruined engine.  view

We have a 2002 volkswagen passat station wagon. several days ago, the air bag light came on steadily & the car was accelerating sluggishly. we took it into the dealership the following day. there was a crack in the pollen filter housing which had allowed rainwater to track into the passenger compartment, under the carpets. a number of key electronic modules are in this location, including the transmission control module and the comfort control module. these units had been destroyed by the pooling water and will have to be replaced. the dealership tells us that this has been a common problem with passats; further research on the internet reveals a large number of people who've had similar problems (see http://www.theautobahn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12789&page=1&pp=10). i believe that this is a serious defect with passats that carries risk to drivers and passengers of these cars.  view

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at 45 mph the vehicle started making a noise in the exhaust area of the engine. the vehicle was taken to the dealership and upon inspection a crack was discovered in the catalytic converter. there is a recall manufacturer recall # 2005060014 on the catalytic converter. the contact was notified of the manufacturer recall; however there are no parts available to repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was contacted the parts are on backorder.  view

Accelerator petal engaged to the floor and took off down the nj turnpike. i started braking trying to slow the car down while signaling to get over in order to bring the car to a stop.(i was on the truck side..) once over on the side and at a full stop the car continued to run. the engine was running as if i was going 55 miles per hour. i placed the car in park and heard a loud shift/clank nose. i turned the car off and the motor finally stop racing and stopped. my wife and i was so scared... we started to get out if it had not stop running. we thought it would start a fire. we waited a while, started up again, got of the turnpike immediately and drove home very slow. i took it to the dealer the next day. they kept it for a day an a half and told me they couldn't find any problems with the car. the supervisor of repairs said that the computer/diagnosis reads a code: p299s. he also say that the current problem i stated was shown in the computer 260 miles ago. and, that the computer showed that the car was traveling 50 mph while the brake pedal was engaged(at the same time !). who in their right mind would drive a car at high speed while stepping on the brake?. oh, also the supervisor said he wouldn't go changing the computer just because of this. i got my car back, drove it home and parked it. i'm scared to drive it and my wife is too. i haven't decided what to do next.(ps. they were quick to tell me that my car was out of warranty.... ii do have an extended warranty.  view

The previous recall for ball joints did not include this vehicle which is a 1999 durango, i had to pay out of pocket to have them replace ball joints in november 2004. when i recently had my vehicle looked over by the dealer, i was told that i need new ball joints again. i don't think i should have been excluded from the initial ball joint recall. obviously my vehicle was showing qualifications.  view

Consumer's vehicle followed a school bus, no children were on the bus. around 7:50 am the bus stopped for red light. speed was approximately 20-25 mph. as the brake pedal was pushed down the vehicle began to slow down, but it did not slow as quickly as normal. the abs engaged, but the vehicle continued to proceed forward. there was plenty of room and time that the vehicle should have stopped but it did not. the vehicle bumped the rear of the bus, pushing in the bumper of vehicle. this incident followed the pattern set forth in nhtsa recall 05v379000 on august 29 2005. however, on november 18, 2005 the local dealer performed the procedure that gmc recommended to correct this problem, but i feel that the vehicle still failed in this incident.  view

Nissan maxima 2000 ignition coils were replaced today at an astronomical price on a relatively new vehicle with average miles. research indicates this vehicle has prematurely failing ignition coils and problem is pervasive. nhtsa should force a recall since clearly this is a manufacturer defect.  view

Dt:the contacts states the gas tank scrapes the ground when two or more people sit in the rear seat of the vehicle. the dealership stated the vehicle had been damaged, causing this problem. the dealership repaired the heat shield that covers the gas tank. this did not correct the problem. the manufacturer was contacted, and they stated the rear springs were causing the scrapping. this would be repaired under warranty. the door doesn't close properly. updated 01/19/06.  view

I have a 2000 honda odyssey minivan with 52k miles on it and the coil spring around the strut of one of the wheels snapped while driving on a flat road. there was no trauma that made it snap. i was told that if that had happened while we were going 55 mph on the highway, i would have been in real trouble. i don't think that the coil should have snapped at 52k miles. it's going to cost more than $900 to fix.  view

Dt: the contact stated steering wheel locked and she could not get the steering wheel to turn. it locked while the vehicle was parked. a neighbor was able to unlock the steering wheel by maneuvering the steering wheel with the key in the ignition. updated 1/19/2006 - the vehicle was repaired at the dealer.  view

Dt: the contact's husband vehicle stalled without warning while being driven. there were no warning lights to indicate any problem. the vehicle was towed. it was taken to the dealer for service, where they added insulation to an air conditioning line and replaced the distributor cap. the vehicle was repaired. updated 1/19/2006 - the second time the vehicle stalled the dealer advise the consumer to remove the distributor cap and remove the corrosion from the cap and rotor. the vehicle was able to be restarted and was taken to the dealer for service.  view

Dt:the contact's vehicle was involved in two accidents. upon impact, the airbags did not deploy. the first accident occurred on february of 2003 while traveling about 45 mph. she was wearing a seat belt during the accident. this was a frontal impact. the second accident occurred on september 19, 2005 while traveling about 50 mph. she was wearing a seat belt, but sustained injuries. updated 01/19/06.  view

2 weeks after oil change and driving less than 200 miles the oil indicator comes on. place a quart of oil in , 2 days later the engine smoke and oil needle indicator was below half. 2nd time this occur, you could see the needle going back and forth to empty to 1/2 full. engine smoke but ran after cooling down with more oil.  view

2005 chrysler 300 c has a documented history of stalling since taking ownership of vehicle. vehicle has stalled multiple times while driving. dealership has attempted to reprogram the powertrain control module, clean the combustion chambers, and replace the manifold absolute pressure sensor; problem still exists. after the most recent occurrence of stalling i was unable to restart the vehicle. i took a video of the attempts to restart the vehicle as the dealership has never been able to duplicate the issue. i have also contacted chrysler customer relations and they have stated that there is nothing they can do since the dealership cannot duplicate the issue even though i have shown the dealership the video of the stall / non-start issue. vehicle has approximately 29,000 miles.  view

Ignition cylinder lock up- i do not know what led to the lock up. a few days before this happened my emission light came on and then went out a few days later. i know several people have had the same problem with the ignition cylinder lock up... please recall and fix the problem.  view

I own a 1994 chevrolet s-10 with a 4.3l v-6 engine which i purchased new.. it currently has approximately 88,000 miles on the odometer. for several years now this truck had an idle lope and miss which i have been unable to correct. i have changed the spark plugs and wires several times. i have replaced the throttle position sensor, manifold absolute pressure sensors, fuel injector, fuel regulator, and all associated hardware that should be replaced as a unit on that model and fuel system. the egr system has been serviced under recall. up to this point there have been no serious driveability problems. the only indication of a problem has been that the "check guages" indicator would briefly light up under sudden deceleration. the "check engine" light has never lit to my knowledge, nor have i been able to recover a cpu fault code using published procedures. that is part of what has been so maddening about this problem--vehicle diagnostics are not detecting a problem, so i basically became frustrated with replacing parts that were not defective. i have had this truck to 3 authorized gm dealers: prater chevrolet in lafollette tn, fox chevrolet in clinton tn, and reeder chevrolet in knoxville tn. that has been another frustrating aspect to the problem. since the dealer service departments have been unable to resolve the problem i have been stuck with trying to find a resolution on my own. only now, the problem is getting worse. until recently, there was no noticeable miss in the driving speed range of the engine. now there is and it will only get worse, i'm sure. when the truck is in park, there is also a noticeable variation of engine speed on the tachometer, from idle all the way to about 3500 or 4000 rpm--i have not accelerated and held the engine to near red line speed in a no load condition. i am now to the point where i am concerned about the safety of this vehicle if it we to stop, in say, heavy traffic at interstate speed.  view

Power steering return line from rack to cooler rubbed on frame of 98 ford windstar until a hole resulted in loss of most ps fluid. drastic loss of fluid occurred descending blue ridge mountains. windstar had about 125,000 miles, and the damage to the hose was not visible from normal inspection. fluid sprayed over hot engine parts but did not ignite.  view

While driving south on us interstate 89 near montpelier, vt, pulled over to adjust stuck windshield wiper (due to snow). after exiting highway via exit ramp and parking in a parking lot, returned towards highway after about a 5 minute delay. as was accelerating up the on ramp, transmission "let go" and engine revved. transmission would no longer shift and remained stuck in 2nd gear. limped to nearest service station. vehicle was towed to isuzu dealership where metal was found in the tranny pan upon inspection indicating transmission failure. vehicle had 79k miles, was serviced at 60k as per manufacturer's recommendations, no other drivetrain problems or indication of imminent failure before incident. transmission (4l30e) had to be replaced with new transmission.  view

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle has a problem with the abs. when stopping the brake pulsates causing an extended stopping distance. this occurs every time when trying to stop from a slow speed. there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the hydraulic anti lock brakes. the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin. also, the vehicle has problems with the fuel gauge. after filling the vehicle up the fuel gauge will read empty, then jump to being full. this occurs intermittently. the dealer has been contacted. the consumer stated the sensors just needed to be cleaned. updated 02/21/06.  view

We have a 2002 oldsmobile silhouette. in november, 2005 we started having trouble with steering vibration and severe pulling to the right. it turns out a left tie rod end was failing. the mechanic told us that it was close to failure and if it did we would get in an accident. we got that fixed but now we have the same problem and it turns out that the same tie rod on the right side has an end that is failing.  view

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at 65-70 mph the vehicle lost power and stopped. this is the fifth time this happened. the vehicle has been taken to several dealerships and each determined the fuel injectors were defective. the fuel injectors have been replaced 17 times. however, after each replacement the problem returns and the vehicle is currently at a local dealership for inspection and repair.  view

Premature failure, excessive premature wear of the brake rotors. vehicle serviced by trebour ford every 5,000 miles according to service schedule. at this visit, informed that brake pads were close to needing replacement. this is normal and understandable. however, was also informed that the brake rotors were beyond the point of being used further. they were worn so badly that they could not be machined even once. my experience is that brake rotors when properly maintained should last the life of the vehicle. this vehicle has been maintained properly and has 34,917 miles which has been primarily highway usage. the need for brake rotor replacement at this point was due to defective equipment installed at time of production.  view

My odometer stopped functioning on my 2004 tahoe z71. i brought it into the dealer under warranty. the dealer advised me that this was happening to all of the tahoe's and they were back logged trying to get the parts. it took over a week to get my tahoe back. the dealer said that they repaired my cluster. the hour meter has 279 hours less now than it did when i brought it in. the mileage had 4 more miles on it. i called and advised the dealer that the hour meter had 279 hours less and asked him if they repaired the cluster or replaced it? he said they repaired it. so i called my brother in-law who's been a mechanic for chevy for over 29 years. he said that they had to replace the cluster and just reprogrammed the mileage and hours. why would the dealer make a false statement to me and tell me that they repaired the cluster when they must have replaced it? also, why hasn't this been a recalled by chevy? it's a safety hazard and is happening to all the tahoe's. i have only driven it home, so i can not tell you if the problem has been permanently corrected.  view

I have a 2005 cadillac cts-v with 17800 miles. it has developed a whine in the rear differential. upon investigating further, i found this has not been unusual for this model. (gm has used the same differential in this car as they put in the base cts model, which has significantly less torque) upon taking the car to the gm dealer, they said they would have to replace the differential, but would have to await parts to do so. they are to call me when they get the parts in stock. they also said the clutch has been updated and have ordered a new clutch also.  view

I have a 2005 cadillac cts-v with 17800 miles. it has developed a whine in the rear differential. upon investigating further, i found this has not been unusual for this model. (gm has used the same differential in this car as they put in the base cts model, which has significantly less torque) upon taking the car to the gm dealer, they said they would have to replace the differential, but would have to await parts to do so. they are to call me when they get the parts in stock. they also said the clutch has been updated and have ordered a new clutch also.  view

I have a 2005 chevrolet monte carlo, supercharged ss, tony stewart signature series. the vehicle has active onstar, xm radio, sun roof and the rest of the bells and whistles connected with the vehicle. the problem is with the xm radio and onstar system. the antenna for all the radio systems are located on the rear roof, behind the sun roof. the problem occurs whenever you open the sunroof. the sunroof tilts up and covers the antenna. this causes the xm radio to lose signal. the main purpose of this complain is that the onstar also loses signal. this defeats the safety feature of the onstar system, because if you were in an accident, the onstar emergency personnel would not be notified and this would lead to severe injury and possibly death. i have taken the vehicle to ron anderson chevrolet in fernandina beach, fl. they contacted their gm complaint desk and the reply was "that's just the way it is. close the sunroof part way and that will help reception for the xm radio". there was some type of communication that i have a copy of that indicated the above, but said nothing about the onstar. with the sunroof open, the onstar cellular phone does not work, not i am almost postive that the emergency portion of the onstar is not working either. the vin # is :2g1wz121559255681. chevrolet's postion indicated to me that they would not do anything to rectify this situation or even that they cared. the safety issue is what really concerns me, because the main reason that i purchased onstar waas the fact that you had communications, and if emergency care was needed, it was there. this is an obvious safety issue and general motors, in my opion, could care less. thanks for listening to me and i look forward to hearing from you or general motors. sincerely.  view

The 2002 was in need of front hubs since they were not replaced when they should have been at the time the front differential was rebuilt. this caused the truck to have excessive front wheel friction, and compromised the braking characteristics of the truck. it was difficult to drive, especially in snow, and the front wheel friction would vary based on changes in speed, road contour, temperature, steering input, throttle input, and brake input. while braking the truck would often pitch severely to one side or the other, the abs would activate on dry pavement. on one occasion the abs activated when my foot was off the brake. the truck would also sway from side to side at highway speed as the friction varied from side to side. when the truck was returned to me once from culligan gmc, the power steering effort had increased greatly. the characteristics of the rear locking differential had been changed. the truck was back to the dealer, david cadillac, many times for the same concern with the front differential. on one occasion the truck was returned to me gushing gear lube from the front axle, on another it was returned to me with the front differential empty. i was charged for a 4 wheel alignment when only 2 wheels can be aligned on this truck. the wrong oil filter was installed, the truck was driven abusively by a dealer employee (it was run beyond mechanical limits while cold as i stood in the parking lot), and when i called the service adviser after the truck had been in his shop for over a week without my hearing what it's status was, the service person screamed at me on the phone "when it is finished i will call you!!!", and he slammed the phone down.  view

The power steering stops working at low speed or parked. i have contacted gm several times regarding this and they say there is no fix at this time. dealership has witnessed and documented the problem. i feel this is becoming a safety issue, as it gets worse..ie. make common, every day.  view

I have had two flat tires on my mini van in the last two months. the van is 4.5 years old and i replaced the tires with the manufactures recommended tires a little over a year ago. in both of the cases my tires had rim leaks which i have now discovered occur on many chrysler/dodge vehicles. these leaks are a result of corrosion on the rim (and in this last case my rim was cracked) this defect in the rim design is serious as it leads to under inflated tires which the driver may be unaware of. because the leakage is slow in nature and there is no warning in the handbook that rims need to be replaced/inspected regularly there may be little or no warning. many of these vehicles are mini vans and carry many children to and from places. when i brought this to chryslers attention they told me it was not a manufacturers defect. i believe that it is. they offered no assistance with the issue other than to sell me a new set of rims for over $2000. this vehicle is less than 5 years old and should not need new rims...and more importantly there are thousand/millions of these vehicles on the roads that may have corroding rims and under inflated tires. can you help? given what we learned in the ford explorer investigation i believe it would be wise to take a look at this.  view

While driving on the highway the car started to shimmy violently and all four tired went flat. road service reinflated the tires and when driving off the highway a blowout occurred. the other tires showed large bubbles in the sidewalls. the type was uniroyal tiger paw 215/r55 16. this could have been catastrophic.  view

2005 gmc sierra slt vin #1gtek19b25z238042 i drove the truck 237 miles home and noticed it was not operating properly. i called gmc to resolve the problems. the truck has binding in the front axles, brakes, or differential. this causes the truck to understeer heavily as the truck works to turn the front wheels over the road surface. this also makes the truck difficult to steer, u turns are especially a problem, the truck has sluggish acceleration and stays longer in the lower gears. the rear tires are prone to lose traction due to the increased rolling resistance from the front wheels, braking performance is compromised, the truck will sway back and forth at highway speeds as the rolling resistance of the front wheels varies from side to side. the truck tends to pull to the left, and the suspension is always preloaded from the additional stress. the engine labors to maintain speed on level ground with the vehicle unloaded. on occasion the front wheels will hop off the pavement as it is easier for them to compress the suspension/torsion bars than be turned over the road. it is difficult to maintain a straight line with the truck since the front wheels tend to follow the contours of the road. the front wheel assemblies make a low frequency sound when driving. the transmission, engine, and drivetrain components are always loaded and driving on snow or ice would be treacherous since the front wheels would stop turning on the low friction surface. driving in the rain is bad enough and the rear wheels tend to break loose. the transmission has behaved strangely, stuttering on occasion as it tried to find the proper gear, it has slipped or freewheeled as i went to accelerate from a stop. the wrong oil filter was installed, the air cleaner is loose and rattles in the engine compartment. the power steering provides little or no assist and requires more effort than i have ever experienced from a vehicle that is supposed to have power steering.  view

1995 taurus fire started under the hood. the consumer was driving the vehicle when black smoke started emitting from under the hood. the consumer managed to pull over before the vehicle became totally engulfed in flames. the consumer searched the internet and found out that her vehicle had been recalled for a faulty cooling fan which could result in a fire. the consumer contacted the manufacturer and was informed that her vehicle was included in the recall. the consumer was never notified of the recall. the manufacturer inspected the vehicle to see if the fire was caused by the cooling fan. the dealer was unable to determine the cause because the engine compartment was so badly damaged therefore they provided the consumer with no assistance.  view

2006 pontiac g6 gtp rental car with approx 2,200 miles driving 25-35 mph for approx 30 min., lost power steering. pulled off road, smoke from grille, opened hood to find fire between fire wall and engine. due to loss of power steering, i presume power steering connection broke or hose split sending fluid on hot engine causing fire. fire was put out before it got big by passerby's soda. car was still drivable (engine had cooled - fire out), but had rental company pick it up just in case the fluid had not evaporated/burned off.  view

2004 ford thunderbird accelerator has a 12 to 1 second or more delay in engine response (drive by wire) when either starting from a dead stop or when passing or changing lanes. ford claims it is by design and will not address the delay. the lincoln ls is identical in engine and drive chain and has no delay. this delay is extremely unsafe when pulling out from a stop street or even on the highway when going to pass or changing lanes. the dealer has been helpful but must wait for ford to respond with a computer change to rectify the problem but none has come in two years. this problem existed from date of purchase.  view

The front brake rotors became warped and needed to be replaced at only 23000 miles. the rotors warped because of heat build up during braking,and the dealer replaced them with vented rotors to avoid this in the future. pads and all other brake components were fine. i have learned of several other jeep gr cher owners who experienced the same problem, and i believe that a car of this size should have had vented rotors installed at the time it was assembled.  view

I have a 2005 nissan frontier with 4,200 miles on it. about a week ago the truck died in the middle of the road. it was still running, but it would not accelerate. this happened one day after the engine check light came on. according to the dealer and the owner's manual,this shouldn't have been a big deal. anyway, it turned out that i had a crack and small hole in driver's side tail light. the hole was the size of a ball. it had been raining for a few days, and apparently water was getting into this hole. the dealer told me, after 3 days with my truck, that water getting in through the tail light was the cause of my truck breaking down. the only thing done to correct this problem was replacing the tail light. they didn't check for other leaks, or other faults with the vehicle. it just seems absurd to me that a modern vehicle can be disabled by such a minor thing, and had this happened on the freeway there could have been a major accident. what they are basically saying is that driving this vehicle in the rain could cause a breakdown, and all they did was fix my tail light.  view

I purchased a 2000 chevrolet suburban new in july of 2000. within 2 years of purchase the emergency brake would not hold very well. living in houston, texas. this seemed odd since the emergency brake was rarely used. i noticed it gradually getting worse. in august of 2005 we moved to a part of texas with hills and needed the parking brake, but it would not hold even if fully depressed. repairs at the chevrolet dealer totaled $485 plus tax. how could the lining, rotors, shoes, and retainers of the parking brake need replacing if the brake just holds the vehicle in place when and if used? this seems like a defect to me.  view
