1992 SATURN SL1 User Comment / Complaint

Power steering tensioner failed while turning. vehicle completely disabled and needed towing. please describe details.  view

Before 9000 miles, my front brakes had severe vibration and pedal pulsation. the dealer said the rotors were warped and replaced them. after only 13000 additional miles the problem re-occurred. again the dealer said the rotors were warped and needed replacement. i have corresponded with the manufacturer and they have denied any problem. the brakes are unreliable and cannot be expected operate correctly in case of an emergency.  view

The steering column shifter broke while placing it into drive. the entire steering column had to replaced.  view

The consumer was unable to release the child from the car seat. the buckle was inoperative.  view

The steering wheel started jerking uncontrollably while driving,the consumer was unable to maintain control of the vehicle. the driver applied the brakes, but the pedal went to the floor. the vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle and it flipped over. the air bags did not deploy. the insurance company repaired the vehicle.  view

While car was parked in driveway, a fire started spontaneously. i was awoken by a passerby by doorbell at 0555 in the morning. when i opened my front door my 2000 ford expedition was on fire. the hood was on fire and their were multiple explosions sparks flying everywhere as well as glass. the tires in front were also on fire. their is extensive damage to the front of the vehicle as well as the interior. however, the back of the vehicle does not look bad on the outside but is completely torched on the inside. the fire was so intense that it ruined my garage door and has altered the look of the brick on the front of my house. the driveway is also damage as well as the lawn from the extensive heat. glass was blown all over the lawn. i attempted to call ford today with no success. luckily because of the passerby my children were not injured and my house is still intact. i seriously believe that had the fire dept been 5 minutes later my whole house would have been engulfed in flames. my gas water heaters are located directly above the garage. seeing that the sealant on the garage doors was completely melted as well as the metal door, it wouldn't of taken much more to ignite the gas water heaters. i want to do something to help other citizens know of this danger before their car or house is destroyed. what can i do to help?  view

Details: the vinyl covering on the dashboard is peeling away from the underlying structure. it has, over a period of about 5 months, peeled back far enough that it obstructs the view out of the windshield. the windshield defrost vent trim no longer fits into place. the defroster no longer works properly, as the vinyl now obstructs the air flow. the vinyl is also in such a position as to potentially impede the function of the passenger-side airbag. the extended warranty does not cover the dash, ford will not cover the full cost of the replacement ($1200). the dash on a 4 year car should not warp so badly it looks like a pringles chip. this is a design flaw with potential safety concerns, and should be subject to a recall.  view

Ongoing problems with power steering. feels like engine is stalling and power steering is locking up when making turns at low speed. very difficult to steer. this happens intermittently.  view

Vehicle had a difficult time stopping when the driver stepped on the brake pedal. took vehicle to the dealer for check up, and results indicated that hubs and brakes needed to be replaced. brakes failed to stop the vehicle at 5 mph. the emergency brake had to be used to stop the vehicle.  view

Recall campaign; tires had been checked at intervals of 3k miles, and there were many indications that there was a problem. the consumer stated that at 38000 miles he was informed that two of the vehicle tires had a split in the treads. the consumer took the tires to goodyear an was offered $50.00 per bad tire. the remaining tires were rotated to the front but the vehicle still pulled to the right after the alignment. all four tires have now been replaced with another brand of tire.  view

My 2002 chevy malibu (3 yrs old, just our of factory warranty) with 33,000 miles had the front left brake seize up. i limped it to the dealer, half a mile away from my house. by the time i got there, the front left brakes were smoking. i was told that the caliper seized up because the pads were too worn. also that the pads on the left were worn also. the chevy dealer said i needed to have rotors turned on both wheels, calipers replaced on both wheels, and new pads & caliper bolts. total cost $784 not covered by the extended warranty that i paid $1250 for when i bought the car. the wear indicators gave very little warning that the brakes were warn. i had the brakes inspected a year ago (9000 miles ago) and was told they were fine. i can understand turning the rotors. i expect to pay for pads. but replacing the calipers on both wheels? did i just get taken for a ride by my chevy dealer? i have seen lots of reports about premature brake wear on malibu. what are my options? i have already paid for the repair.  view

I purchased my vehicle 2 weeks ago when i was driving down the freeway, it felt like i hit something but nothing was in the road. i assumed i had a blowout. when i pulled to the side of the road the hood was smoking, and the tires were fine. i then proceeded to open the hood to find a fire. the fire department came to put out the fire and suggested that it was an electrical malfunction. i am currently in the process of having the vehicle evaluated to find out if this is true.  view

I was involved in a pretty intensive accident on 2-3-04 and i could have really hurt myself bad and the airbags did not release to save my life. i could have really been hurt, i bought my car based on its safety features and at the time when i need my car to work the most the safety was not there.  view

'98 ford expedition - car fire - car destroyed. drove 1.8 miles from my home and went into a store. 5 minutes later i come out to the car on fire. it looked like someone had built a campfire on the engine hood right in front of the drivers side. insurance did investigation but could not prove anything - not enough left to figure it out.  view

Pe95-012 the belt tensioner was replaced having the same problem again, the transmission make a noise and hard to shift .  view

While driving at 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly jerked. the consumer could not control the vehicle while crossing into oncoming traffic lanes and coming to a stop on the shoulder. the consumer noticed that the lower ball joint had separated and the tire (wheel assembly) had folded under the passenger side of the vehicle.  view

The check engine light illuminated. the consumer took the vehicle to a mechanic to have it checked and it was discovered, that the fuel injection system was leaking fuel onto the control module. fuel wicking to top of the motor and to the power train control module set on top of the right side wheel well causinga fire hazard.  view

The vehicle stalled while driving, the consumer noticed that the check engine light flashed on then off. the consumer tried to restart the vehicle but was unable to do so. the consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer. the mechanic informed the consumer that the engine needed to be replaced due to sludge build up.  view

Daytime running lights, drl problem. i am often required to drive with lights off on property as an astronomer at nighttime. my 2005 toyota corolla lights are always on even when the lights are in the off position. if stalked or my girlfriend drives the car we could not turn them off and drive away and escape alive. this is a hazard that can cause death or rape from stalkers or robbers. i often am alone at night in dark deserted areas and need to be able to turn light off or on as needed. i could not get on the observatory property due to this defect.  view

Engine stumbled an acceleration and surged, causing vehicle to hit another passenger car. accelerator stuck on several occasions, nearly causing previous accidents. i took the truck to the dealership and stated the problems, even though they were unable to find the problem. they agreed that a problem could exist somewhere in the electronics. i am now serving 5yrs and 10months in prison for this accident. there was no evidence to support my plea, if it was a accident or deliberate act by the driver. not only do i wish this to be fixed, but i need more evidence that this has happened to other people has well. i need written evidence from other states that these accidents have happened. in hopes it will help my case. so i can get back home to my family.  view

Defective brakes, truck lid, steering and suspension. when driving vehicle to l when turning r and vice versa. upon making a right turn from stop or slow speed when straightening the vehicle to tracel in a straight line the steering wheel was cranked to the left and off center by 45 degrees. there was a delay in the steering wheel to return to a normal position. when driving 55 mph the steering wheel noticeably fights the driver and attempts to turn in the opposite direction of the way the consumer is turning. the vehicle over steers when changing lanes. the steering often spins in one direction or the other when vehicle brakes are activated. the brakes grind and squeak.  view

A car made an illegal left turn in front of me, i hit that car doing about 55 mph, after that impact the truck swerved to the right. and i hit another car stopped at a red light. my questions is why didn't my air bags deploy. after doing $12000. damage and ford is wanting to total my truck.  view

2 failures of stabilizer end link on 2002 f250 4x4 supercrew lariat one has torn boot on lower knuckle (passenger). second failure 4 months later, boot was in tack lower knuckle driver side.  view

The gas peddle gets stuck and does not press down to accelerate. i have to try to mash down on the gas peddle several times for it to work. i was told the problem was the throttle valve cable was messed up and needed to be replaced and that there was carbon buildup. the mechanic that tried to fix it said he drained black gunk out of it.  view

Gm has a recall on the year model of my pickup, but not on my particular vin no. for a defective wiper-motor circuit board. i have the same problem on my pickup as the ones being recalled but was told it is not covered under recall and it has too many miles on it to be covered anyway.the vehicle is a 1994 chevrolet c- 1500 pickup. recalls are on a number of vehicles from 1994 to 1997 for this problem.  view

In 09-2004 purchased land rover 2004 discovery, after contacting the dealer and land rover csr they informed me that my 2004 has a door checker as a safety device on tail gate door which is sharp and swings closed. come to find out that this is something else. there is no safety latch for discovery vehicle tail gate doors-i offered to pay and nothing is available. they said that it is only required to stay open on flat land with no wind. i live in california, redwood shores where the whole town is flat and the weather is mild this door has almost killed me twice. i feel this car does not comply with safety requirements for this reason.  view

Upper and lower ball joints required replacement after 2,000 miles of ownership. this was brought to the dealers attention. the dealer would not fix the problem, stating it was a wear item. it should have been caught and fixed before offering the vehicle for sale, but they claim otherwise. i was forced to replace both sets of ball joints on my own. since then, dc has recalled the upper joints. the upper joints created a situation causing the lower joints to fail also and should be covered in their recall. they also do not specify covering the alignment needed after joints are replaced. the recall should be reissued covering upper and lower ball joints along with alignment to remedy the situation in this recall failure.  view

Letter referenced defective firestone steeltex radial r4 5 tires. the consumer request investigation for motorhome tire tread separation. the inside dual tread separated causing damage to the underside of the motorhome. the tire was shipped to the manufacturer for inspection. the manufacturer indicated that the inspection revealed that eh tire had been operated for an unknown period of time in an over-deflected state which caused the tread to separate. the manufacturer denied the consumer's request for compensation (1998 coachman class c). the consumer stated that there was a loud bang under the left side of the motor home followed by several more bangs. after the tire was inspected the consumer was informed that the tire showed deformation and rim flange grooving.  view

Head gasket failure. mr the consumers head gasket was replaced under a special service campaign, however the problem was not remedied because the head gasket failed again less than 50 miles after the original repair was done.  view

When the consumer applied the brakes abruptly the vehicle kept going and hit the vehicle in front of him. the air bag did not deploy.  view

I own a ford f250,2002, diesel. on three different occasions, while driving down the road the engine has simply quit. on two of those instances, i was very lucky not to have had a terrible accident. the first time, it was under warranty and they fixed it no problem, the last two times, it has been rather expensive to have it fixed. ford does pay for the part and it is the same part each time, a cam sensor, but i have to pay for the towing and the deductible. this is extremely dangerous, and it is the same part that is failing. according to the tow truck drivers who have picked up the vehicle, they say it is a common problem. it has also happened to my brother-in-law and he has a 1999 model, but only once. i only have 57,000 miles on the truck, and as i said, it is extremely dangerous, as when it goes, there is no warning, it simply dies. the first time i was doing 70 mph and was just about wiped out by a semi behind me.  view

Shifting cable was replaced after failure. jeep was "slipping" in gear. i was run over by the vehicle after putting it in park and getting out. vehicle began "slipping" in gear again. i had no reverse. took it to the dealer and they said a lever was loose on the tranny and they tightened it. still slipping.  view

The front rotors/pads were replaced the and brakes were resurfaced been back to dealer eight time in two year time .  view

The passenger side air bag deployed after the consumer bumped a divider in the road, at 30 mph with the driver side of the vehicle. the consumer contacted the manufacturer, who sent written guidelines on air bag deployment, stating that the air bag should deploy on the passenger side if that was the side struck.  view

Pump retaining pin on the transfer case failed, permitting the pump to wear a hole in the transfer case with sudden release of the engine oil. chevrolet is not claiming knowledge.  view

I lost heat in my 2001 pontiac aztek, brought to repair shop, leaking intake manifold gasket was the cause. they said this is a known problem, gm has new service bulletin on it and new design. cost to repair 794.00 car has 43203 miles. called gm and they will not help, even though they know its a bad gasket design on and affecting about every gm vehicle with the 3.4l v^ engine. i purchased new and expect gm to cover these costs. and am curious why a recall has not been issued?  view

Gasoline smell when starting car in cold weather (<20f). this has been a recurring problem on my 02 subaru wrx. the first event was at approx 15000 miles and the fuel line clamps were tightened. a second time at 45000 miles and the dealer could not duplicate (because the car was warm in the dealership.) now at 73,000 miles in 20f weather, the smell has returned when starting the car with the engine cold. i can see the gasoline puddling below the problem hose clamps. subaru has known about this for years now and issued a tsb, but the dnagerous fuel leak problem persists! of course, the repair they did on my car (tightening the clamps) while it was in warranty was not a permanent fix, and i face potential repairs at my cost for a problem subaru should have fixed by now. not only is this a safety defect (fuel pubbling on the engine), it is also likely an emissions defect (raw gasoline vapors to the atmosphere) and a passenger health risk from breathing gasoline vapors. i don't understand why there has not been a recall on this long-known problem!  view

Head gasket failure in subaru legacy outback 1998. engine overheated which lead to lead to smoke coming out under the hood and subsequent warping of engine heads. i hard to replace gasket heads but i am told there is no guarantee this would not happen again since there is an apparent design flaw in the 2.5l engines.  view

Vibration leading to a shudder in the front end of a 2004 acura tl. vibration starts at 1500 rpm up through 2000 rpm at 45 mph through 60 mph. vibration and shudder is intermittent in nature and can be quite severe causing you to slow down. car has been back to the dealer 3 times since i purchased it in october 2004. they have aligned the motor mounts, balanced the tires, adjusted the solenoid on the transmission and adjusted a heat shield . still have the problem. spoke with acura client service and was told this is a driving characteristic of the car but their engineers are working on it. they assigned a case # to it b01-2004-11-1100593, my case managers name is ed. at present they have no fix for the problem and i don't feel they know what the problem is. i have noticed many postings on the internet from other acura tl owners having the same problem.  view

1.) upon braking, rear brakes locked up (excessively engage.) on light application. caused rear of vehicle to want to slide when braking on wet roads or snow. vehicle had 49,000 miles. 2.) inspected, found brake shoe return springs on both rear wheels broke. 3.) replacing brake shoe return springs.  view

(1) abs/brake light indicators appeared on the dash. the amber (abs light) stays on while the red brake light blinks. an audible alert sounds for 3 seconds, but the lights stay on. this indicates that the abs control module is malfunctioning, thus loosing abs abilities. (2) after researching through audi forums (audiworld.com or audiforums.com), i discovered this is a common occurrence in audi's (1997-2001), including a4's, a6's and vw passats. it is speculated that water or moisture seeks into the module computer board, thus shorts it out. it was confirmed by my audi dealer that my abs unit is defective. i received a $2,400 estimate to have it repaired. (3) nothing, too expensive- my bigger issue here is safety- most audi/vw owners aren't aware that this is a recurring/frequent problem in their cars, because it's usually caught under warranty. if you?re like me and have an expired warranty you are paying through the nose. i called audi of america to alert them about this defect and asked them to recall it nationally- they said no because my car is older. to that point, why did they recall the throttle body, lower control arms and a plastic wire protector on 12/15/04 if my car is so-called "older?" again they can't justify it. that leads me to believe that it would cost them too much money! i am hoping that someone doesn't get injured because of money or it takes an accident to get this (abs module) defect recalled, then i am sure audi will end up paying 10x more. please make this recall happen as well as ask audi to inform their owners about this problem.  view

I have multiple complaints, the gas gauge on my vehicle stop working and i ran out of gas in the middle of the street when i realized problem 2 the rear brake lights and hazard lights do not work. the other problem is the vehicle stalls, and when it finally take off, the car jerks and the driver seat moves/slides back from the hinges which caused me to not be able to reach my breaks and run into a curb. also the driver side door sticks and is difficult to open. lastly the wheel baring and ball joints have gone bad twice and the car has less then 75000 miles on it. i called gm customer service department and explained all of my concerns and was told they we not aware of any nationwide problem and there was nothing they could do except fix the hazard light malfunction. i researched on the net and found many many people complaining of the same concerns i have.  view

While driving at any speed, under any acceleration, accelerator pedal fails and the vehicle's throttle does not respond. once while driving 70 mph on the e-way, vehicle began decelerating as if gas pedal were not depressed and i had to quickly pull over to shoulder to avoid being stranded in the middle of e-way. another time i pulled out into heavy traffic and accelerator pedal failed, nearly causing a serious accident. both times, epc light illuminated in dash cluster - i was able to reset the problem by shutting vehicle off and restarting engine. dealer diagnosed a failed valve in the throttle body. when i asked the service writer if this was a common problem, he replied "well, not all of them fail." to me this implies a widespread problem. i contacted vw and they would offer no assistance in replacing a part that controls the throttle - this should never fail! vw also would not help me when i went through 3 brake switches (part now subject to recall). vehicle needs new throttle body. part is approx. $800 + labor. why would the throttle fail on a vehicle well under 100,000 miles? primary systems (braking, accelerating) should never fail without warning. this is dangerous and unacceptable.  view

Tribute would make slipping noise when on a hill. it would also shutter when i first took off. i called the dealership about the problem. they thought it was the transmission, but couldn't look at the car until after the first of the year. about 2 weeks later, i took off and the car surged. i pulled off the road and when i put the car back into drive, it wouldn't move. it was towed to the mazda dealership where it still sits. i was told it needed a new transmission that would cost $2900+. the district manager was notified. they took $1000.00 off the price. which leave me paying only $1900+ the other $900. i've put in this car since july 04. i had a full circle service inspection done on oct.25 ,2004. the transmission condition was good at that time, just 2 months earlier.  view

Recall number 04v332000: consumer has been waiting to be contacted since october for the recall part. however, the parts still have not arrived. the consumer has been calling the dealer and manufacturer for sometime now, and have not received any results. please provide any further information.  view

Water entering passenger floor. carpet pad soaked mold smell in car.had it in dealer shop at 4500 miles 16000 miles they replaced carpet and obviously temporarily fixed the leak. now the warranty is up and the dealer wants me to pay to have the leak fixed. i attempted to repair it myself but cant stop the leak. ford has service bulletins about this water leak but apparently they don't know how to fix the leak either.now i am stuck with a molded smelling car and a wet carpet.  view

Humming noise is experienced while the car is going at a constant speed or going up the hill. this noise was reported the first day after the vehicle was bought and the noise has increased over time. bought the van brand new on 2/29/04 and reported the problem the next day. since then, taken the van to the dealership numerous times. each time i am told that it is a normal condition. even nissan rep. came and inspected the car and made the same comment. if it is a problem, it needs to be fixed like so many other things on the van.  view

Both left and right hub bearing assembly have been diagnosed as loose. an independent repair shop advised that both need to be replaced before an alignment could be performed. john wigant of walker chevrolet told me, prior to a written statement, that both sides exhibit a worn out diagnosis, but that only one side should be replaced now and that the other might never need to be replaced or it could get worse. in a written statement from john wigant of walker chevrolet, i was informed that only the passenger side bearing should be replaced. i have had other problems with rotors that literally shook my front end and steering column during the warranty period of 36,000 miles. and the intermediate shaft has been repaired and replaced 3 times. the last time it was reported on november 18, '04 and not repaired until december 30, '04 at 53,267 miles. i have been advised that replacing these hub bearings will cost me about $1,000.00 to repair. i have read another complaint in nhtsa files that a same year impala front wheel or axle fell off and caused a driver to veer off the road. i feel that the past rotor and intermediate shaft problems have exasperated this wear and caused it to be a bigger problem. i have had problems with the electrical system, speedometer cable, radio, and rear window. all have been serviced, but continue to exhibit the same problems that existed before repair or replacement.  view

This is a follow up to a complaint that i made in 2003 or early in 2004. my 2000 honda civic original tires failed. 2 failed and were replaced with the same brand under warranty, then the other 2 failed and i bought a different brand. then i registered this with you. just now the first 2 tires replaced failed for the same reason. please respond and let me know that you have combined this complaint with the previous complaint. please note that i am very meticulous about air pressure and rotation.  view

My wife has a 1999 durango with 48000 miles and had to have all 4 ball joints replaced in the thing since she purchased the vehicle. now the are saying one of the ball joints are no good!!! granted the first 2 were covered under warranty but she had to pay for the other 2 out of her pocket and now looking to pay out of pocket again!!!!  view
