Electrical system failure, starters have failed three times.  view

I bought the car used in 2001 with 30k miles on it. i bought the extended warranty to carry me over to 75k miles. i first had to replace the ignition. then i had to get a new fuel filter and fuel pump. i have had to replace the brake pads approx 4-5 times in 2 years. the rotors twice. they both need changed again. the air conditioner had to be serviced because the switch was broke and it was blowing air at all vents including the floor and windshield. then, the motor went out. at approx 65k miles. a used motor was paid for by the warranty company and installed after sitting at the dealership for over a month. this was in january. at that same time the exhaust had went out. i was told my warranty would not cover it because it was not the catalytic converter it was a piece that hooked onto it. finally after they replaced the motor the put a new catalytic converter in. then comes the cd player. it ejects at random and skips. it also gives error codes frequently. then i started having problems with the lights. the abs light and the trac off light stay on along with the check engine light. i was told the check engine light was on because the fuel injectors were clogged. well, yesterday i took the car in for a fuel injector cleaning and flush. i also had a tune up, oil change, tires rotated, air filter installed, new fuel filter, and new spark plugs. still i am having a fuel problem of some sort. the car idles and misfires very badly. it shakes badly enough to make you nauseous. it also misfires when you speed up and sometime sputters like it does not want to go. this was after everything was done. then i am told it sounds like my catalytic converter is going out again after only 8 months. they should be responsible for these problems. i would not say that but i have done extensive research online and found that every single complaint mentioned the brake system but 50% of them mention the fuel system and several mentioned the engine problems.  view

During normal cruising around 55-60 mph, the ets light will come on as the vehicle begins to stutter and the engine modulates. it has become worse over the last week and now the engine "bucks" when the light is on! this is unpleasant at 55 mph! every time the ets light comes on the cruise control disengages and is not able to be reset until the light goes off many ignition cycles (days) later. some research was done over the web and it is amazing to see people describe the exact same or similar manifestation happen on their s70s. i have an appointment tomorrow at the dealer in ann arbor and expect a > $900 bill! come on volvo, how can you not have so many compliants and not recall?  view

Noticed antifreeze smell coming out of heater vents and steam fogging up windshield and side windows, this is the third failure of heater system. was told by service mgr that cooling system was conducting electrical charge. dealer had grounded cooling system after second failure but after 5 months heater core failed again. called chrysler consumer relations and filed a complaint case # 11323644 talked with dealer on 07 june 03 chrysler is sending field rep out to look at truck was told they don't want to buy back truck due to mileage.  view

Windshield wiper motor cuts on and off. once again i have to change all my plans because it is raining.  view

Motorcycle slips out of gear (usually third) at unexpected times. several times while passing vehicles. one time, i had to pull into the oncoming traffics shoulder to avoid a head on collision. some times i could get it back into gear while coasting, while other times i had to come to a complete stop.  view

This car has been a pain in the a-- almost since purchase. the most serious problems have involved what seems to be defective wiring with respect to the electric windows. these have been repaired 3 times since the first incidence cited above,to the tune of $250, the last time being 6 months ago. now i am told that it needs a new motor assembly to the tune of $650 parts and labor! other assorted door electrical problems. other problems have been: door moldings falling off (this must be an inherent problem with '98 jettas, because i've noticed that most of those that i see on the road have missing moldings). both front tires blew out within 2 weeks of each other after an inappropiately short usage. much lower gas mileage that originally promised. most of these problems started well within warranty.  view

We have a 2001 vw beetle and while driving on the interstate in mn, the entire plastic bottom panel separated from the auto. the panel got caught in a rear tire, causing the vehicle to temporarily lose control, then this piece of panel that is about 3' square blasted into the windshield of the car behind. this panel is removed for oil changes, engine repair and fluid fills. the mechanic said this happens with all the beetles, but the panel had to be replaced. i am concerned about the aspect of road debris and the loss of control while driving 70 mph.  view

Following is nhtsa complaint: make: volkswagen model: passat year : 2003 crash : no fire : no number of injuries: 1 odi id number: 10023337 date of failure: january 18, 2003 component: air bags details: the driver's side head airbag (air curtain) of a 2003 volkswagen passat w8 sedan deployed spontaneously while i was driving the car. a few minutes later, when the car was stopped, the steering wheel airbag deployed spontaneously. i suffered a permanent wrist injury and am suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome. the incident, which happened during a test drive, was reported to the management of the vw dealership for which i was working and to vw of america by the management. i sent a detailed incident report to both vwoa and vwag (germany) ceo's. a vw customer service representative admonished me to not make a fuss about the incident, saying it was a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence and advised me that my letter to the vwoa ceo had been received but that he had not read it. the owner of the dealership advised me in a special meeting that he had been contacted by a vwoa management representative who was unhappy with the complaints i had made to the customer service representative about the lack of follow-up by vw and the means of alerting vw owners about the incident i was considering. i left the meeting believing my job and future in the car business, at least selling vw products, would be in jeopardy if i took any affirmative action such as filing this complaint. a promise that i would be informed by vwoa of the reason for the spontaneous deployment has not been fulfilled and i have not been contacted by any vw representative in almost four months. recently, i was fired because of an incident related directly to the incident. i am filing this report because i have just learned that another person has experienced the spontaneous deployment of an airbag in a vw car and i?m confident that what i experienced was not a freak occurrence.  view

First transmission problem was on a secondary road, had to turn around and when i went to back up would not go in reverse or forward. had to be towed. again having a problem with the transmission on august 23, 2003. it is jerking when i go into reverse or forward. will have to be towed to garage. last december was coming of an exit and bolt broke off from steering that goes into the transmission  view

This vehicle was purchased used. 2 weeks after purchase the rear brake bads failed causing them to grind on the rotors. brakes and rotors were replaced. drivers side seat support is broken. power steering pump has a leak. transmission clutches burned out requiring replacement. water pump failed along with failing timing belt & timing belt tensioner causing needed replacement. engine has several oil leaks. rack & pinion system is shifting, causing a thumping sound and vehicle shifting while cornering at times. selt belt on drivers side doesn't retract properly. brakes perform poorly, requiring excessive pedal to stop vehicle. fuel rail is leaking fuel, awaiting mechanic determination if it's covered under the recall.  view

I have a 2001 chevrolet impala ls and i noticed a problem with it right after i bought it. the security passlock system is either not functioning well or it's defected, i researched the problem on the internet forums and i found out that almost 70% of people that own impalas have the same problem. i took it to the dealer and they gave me an enormous sum for the replacement. why should the buyer pay for something that is obviously defected when the majority of the owners have the same problem. gm is at fault here and the owners have to pay for it. i, and many others, believe that it is not us at fault, but gm since they are aware of the high failure rate of their passlock system. my question for you is: why didn't gm issue a recall for this defective part? what can the owners do so we can initiate a recall for this problem?  view

There exists a condition with the secondary timing chain tensioner in 2000 jaguar xj8, vanden plas, or xk8 models that can and does lead to catastrophic engine failure. to date jaguar does not admit that this is a serious design flaw and safety issue. there are no recalls or even a service bulletin on this however failures are documented on the jaguar club of north america and possibly others have been quietly fixed by jaguar. this plastic tensioner can fail upon start-up, as it did in my case, or in the worst scenario it can happen at speed. the plastic housing of the tensioner simply fails resulting in the timing belt breaking and or jumping off. without any warning the result at speed is sudden and complete engine failure, which can lead to an extremely dangerous driving condition. at startup the result is the inability to start the engine stranding the driver wherever the car has stopped. in my case the failure occurred on startup, breaking the timing chain, and resulting in a $2000 repair. the car was a 2000 vanden plas, vin sajda24c5ylf04959, with 42,067 miles and failed without any previous noise or indication. upon engine tear down to repair there was no apparent sign of excessive wear or any oil sludge. the failed tensioner plastic housing simply broke. the other good  view

Anti-lock brake control module failure. my truck has brakes now but no anti-lock because fuse was pulled to keep battery from running down due to control module humming.  view

Abs: after starting up, anti lock brake light and parking light engage light will stay on; when braking, pedal gets very soft causing extended stopping.  view

On several non-successive occurrences, while driving between 35 - 40 mph, i encountered a severe sudden deceleration which felt as if the vehicle undercarriage scraped an invisible bump. the deceleration is sudden, harsh and very unsettling. also, while driving up east coast mountains, such as in md. va. and pa., the transmission seems to have a very bad smell as if heating up too much. eventually the transmission failed. it was replaced by dealer at no cost. now the replacement transmission is doing the same things again! it looks like the transmission is due to fail again!!  view

My suburban has developed a peculiar problem that has left even the dealerships completely clueless!!! the engine heats up to about 180 f (still less than the mid point on the guage) after a couple of hours of driving -- this is quite normal. if we stop and turn the engine off, the vehicle will not start! we have to wait a couple of hours while the engine cools off to about 160 f, and it starts up just fine. we only noticed this since we were on a long cross country drive. the problem is entirely predictable, and we had to plan on two hour stops during our trip. we even drove straight to a dealership in raleigh after straight 6 hour drives so that they could see and diagnose the problem -- but they were completely stumped. i would like chevrolet to help diagnose and fix this problem. the abs module failed without any prior warning. one moment the breaks were fine, the next we were flooring the break pedal and the abs light was on. the mechanics had to go through several attempts at replacing the unit ($1200 for the unit itself). this problem sounds exactly like the issue investigated in 1992-1995 suburbans. i am surprised that the recall was limited to the lighter suvs only -- a decision based on cost (most probably). it stands to reason that the problem would be more critical in heavier vehicles.  view

All three systems failed at the same time.it would appear that the problem is electrical(fuse,relay,etc.)the airbag light is on.i`m not sure as to weather is is operating properly.the window will not operate and the climate control system will not come on(no display)but the a/c compressor clutch can be heard engaging on then off again.  view

Power steering assist failed during cold weather. was sluggish during slow idle. mopar mechanic said that complete replacement would cost over $1000 and may still not solve problem.  view

When driving at any speed, the consumer felt a vibration coming from the vehicle. consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection and the mechanic determined that all four rims were bent. the rims were bent from normal driving conditions.  view

Consumer took vehicle to have a state inspection done and found that the parking brake was not holding the vehicle. it was taken to the chevrolet dealer, and they found that the parking brake shoes were worn out, and both brake rotors needed to be replaced.  view

When accelerating the vehicle jerked. the consumer took the vehcile to the dealership who determined that the transmisson failed.  view

Five months ago the consumer received a recall letter regarding transmission. dealership still does not have the parts available to conduct recall repairs.  view

This vehicle is a lemon -- defective throughout. major problem is a transmission that has failed twice -- once being replaced by the manufacturer only after two years of complaining about the problem, being unable to drive any distances, and after numerous times i paid to have the problem unresolved. since it was replaced in july 2001, i began complaining again about problems in may of 2002, only to get the same run around again. costing me money out of my pocket for their defective cvt transmission for which they refuse to acknowledge their defect. finally got it fixed and the warranty extended for the second time, but in the meantime, check out the vin numbers on the nhtsa website and you'll many other honda owners with transmission problems and very similar vin numbers. late fall 2002 to winter 2003 driver side door lock failed and almost immediately after that was fixed the driver side window failed. i had to drive down the freeway in the rain to get home with a window i could only pull up half way. but to top things off, i have to replace the alternator this month. worse of all, my car was experience symptoms that were apparently attributed to the alternator back in march 31, 1999 service bulletin 98-029. however, honda never notified the vehicle owners. they just played the odds that the majority would fail outside of warranty and they wouldn't have to pay a dime. it amazes me that our government allows auto manufacturers to get away with this type of business practice. just because a part failure may not cause an accident doesn't mean it's not dangerous. if i'm commuting 100 miles a day, as i have been for the past several months, and my car broke down who knows where, i could very well be in danger as a single women traveling a lone. i need to be able to count on my vehicle, which i have gone out of my way to insure was always properly serviced. i can not trust honda and will never buy another one.  view

I have had more transmission problems from my 1991 gmc safari mini van than all other previous vehicles i've ever owned. i'm looking at my third transmission overhaul soon (seems like one every two years) and i don't drive fast and don't have a hitch to "pull" anything. currently, my transmission slips into neutral when the transmission shifts from 2nd to drive. it went from happening once a month to approximately 4-6 times a day. the transmissions shops i've seen say i need an overhaul again. i hate this gmc automatic transmission.  view

Airconditioning leaks from beneath glove compartment. drained twice but company will not repair if there is the presence of any outside material such as a leaf, a piece of debris that they claim is in the system. dealer repair stated that there is something in the body that is allowing debris to get in and when consumer indicated that was a car defect dealer said that there was nothing they could do. therefore, defect in body caused problem with cooling system and neither is covered by warranty. consumer is actively seeking remedy for this problem. car handles like garbage. tires have been replaced, brakes, alignment done twice and the car pulled to the right still. after brakes were done car actually pulled more to left. the car stinks. steering said to have no problem yet see above. the car stinks.  view

Consumer placed key in the ignition of motorcycle to start it. when consumer removed the key from the ignition motorcycle would still be running. consumer drove the motorcycle to dealer, and mechanic informed consumer that motorcycle was operating normally.  view

The consumer turned on the engine and noticed smoke coming through the ignition switch, two minutes later, the steering wheel was on fire. dealer notified. consumer indicated there was a nhtsa recall on this issue.  view

While driving 65 mph vehicle stalled. consumer restarted the vehicle, and it was towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the fuel filter needed to be replaced.  view

Consumer had the same problem as mentioned in nhtsa recall 04v060000 concerning vehicles equipped with electronic column lock systems (ecl). when the ignition switch was turned to lock the ecl prevented the turning off the steering system. when the vehicle was started the ecl unlocked the steering system. dealer indicated sorry this vehicle was not recalled due to vin.  view

Dealership replaced the automatic transmission at 39,500 miles. dealer and consumer split the expenses.  view

During vehicle inspection dealership informed the consumer that front passenger air bag module cracked. the problem was not resolved.  view

Electrical lights/windows, and locks were inoperable. also, windshield wipers failed to come on. consumer will take the vehicle to dealer for inspection this week.  view

The original steering rack had to be replaced with 50% reimbursement from general motors. after receiving a recall notice 01-03, we contacted general motors again and received the other 50% reimbursement for the original replacement after getting the lower pinion bearing inspected and replaced. on 06-06-03, the entire rack and pinion had to be replaced again with full cost to us this time. general motors stated that the car was out of warranty and the original replacement was more than 1 yr old. (we only got 18,000 miles out of the 2nd rack.).  view

Number one piston rod broke which caused the engine to blow and a baseball size hole in the oil pan. entire engine had to be replaced.  view

Wheel was damaged about a month ago. dealership found wheel was considered by ford to be a production only part at this time. the wheel won't be available to the public or dealerships until october. needless to say the spare won't wait until october. consumer contacted fords customer service center and was told that there was nothing they could or would do to help. this is a major safety issue as consumer was forced to drive on a spare for a prolonged period of time.  view

While driving at any speed consumer heard a loud noise coming from the rear. consumer was able to maintained control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. mechanic determined that brake system needed to be cleaned.  view

While applying the accelerator pedal vehicle suddenly accelerated. consumer was not able to maintain control of the vehicle, and crashed into a tree. driver sustained first degree burns, and was taken to a hospital. both airbags deployed. vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection. but dealer was unable to determine the cause of the problem.  view

Windshield wipers were experiencing the same defect as stated in recall 02 v 280 000, but this vehicle wa snot included in recall due to vin.  view

There was an engine knocking problem. the dealer and the manufacturer were contacted. the consumer was given a letter that certified that the manufacturer was aware of this problem, and the vehicle was okay to drive. the consumer disagreed, and felt the vehicle was not safe. there was a noise, rubbing sound when the brakes were applied. there were knocks during the initial start of the day, and the window was noisy while operating as the regulator cable was loose.  view

My vehicle was taken to; tinney chevrolet, 11249 w. carson city rd., greenville, mi 48838 for two (2) ea. recall notices; 1) power sliding door 2) steering bushing results of recalls: 1) power sliding door worked fine till one week after tinney servie dept. worked on it. (doesn't work with power buttons @ all now ) 2) upon picking-up vehicle from the steering (bushing) repair we noticed that steering wheel was cocked to left, steers hard & pulls to right tinney chevrolet was notified of both problems and said that they had nothing to do with problems. the vehicle was fine prior to taking it to them for the recalls. upon confronting them the second time, we were informed to check our own fuses etc.  view

Took new 2004 honda cr-v into dealer (bob barbour honda of greenville, nc) for first oil change on saturday, may 15 2002. on sunday, while driving across town to church with my wife and two young children, i noticed a large amount of smoke. i pulled out of traffic and a man at a nearby business came running out yelling that my car was on fire. we exited the vehicle, unbuckled the children from the saftey seats and got away from the car. the fire dept was called to extenguish the fire. police officer also arrived on the scene. as it is a sunday, i have not been in contact with the dealer yet to determine how they intend to correct the situation. this is a very dangerous situation.  view

Premature clutch failure, the clutch start slipping around 15000 miles, the dealer said will not replace clutch due to wear and tear. have another 92 corolla for 6 years with clutch never had a problem. others are complaining about that matrix xrs clutch too, not just only me. feels like toyota betrayed their customers.  view

Problems with throttle body sticking. the idle was rough, therefore the throttle body was adjusted. the vehicle knocked loud on cold start. the consumer was unsure if the problem was the throttle body or the piston slap. the throttle body was cleaned and did not stick at that point. the consumer requested an extended warranty free of charge until the problem was resolved. scc  view

Front brakes (replaced 3x's in one year) keep failing on dodge durango causing uneven tire wear and alignment to shift. i've had to replace the front tires 4 times and the rear tires twice since i bought this vehicle january 2,2000. all tires wear at an angle with several bald spots in different places. i also replaced the water pump and radiator february 2003. now the air conditioner is not working. the transmission went out a couple of months after i purchased the vehicle. it was still under warranty, but i still had to pay 300.00 out of pocket for whatever reason.  view

The windshield wipers fail to work properly. they stop working at the most inopportune times...like when there is a rain fall and they are needed for safety and visibility. i contacted gm and was told they have not received enough complaints to warrant a recall. the recall is available on 94 to 96 models. however, the manufacture date on my vehicle is 2/17/1997. in a torrential rain fall, going 50 mph on the interstate, the w/s wipers stopped, it was a very dangerous situation, especially when an 18 wheeler passed my son, whom was driving and splashed extra water on the vehicle. luckly he maintained control and he was able to pull off to the side of the road.  view

Once the transmission warmed up it would not down shift and would not change gear going up hill....would shake and shimmy and buck until it finally shifted .....transmission shop and dealership could not seem to find the problem .... wiring was also checked .... finally had to replace transmission to make it stop ... was told after it was replaced that they had had a great deal of this happening to these cars but could not get buick to answer us about the recall  view

For the last 2-3 months any time the back of the car is inclined down, the empty fuel tank light activates and the gage moves down to the empty position. once the car is inclined forward or flat, the light turns off within a few seconds and within 1-3 minutes the gage moves back up. the gage is also slow to respond to filling, and in general not extremely accurate. i called the local dealer/service people, said the gage is acting odd, how much work is involved with troubleshooting the exact problem. they said, we know what it is, it is the sending unit that needs to be replaced. (requiring fuel tank & pump removal, etc...) if this problem is so prevalent that the service desk personnel know immediately what the problem is, obviously this is an extremely common failure and a defective part.  view

Driving my 2002 avalon xls in a hard rain and in pooled street water, the wash from other cars caused my aircondition belt to get wet and the defogging system to go off immediately, result in a complete lack of visibility. the service managerat the dealers said this was a usual occurence and not a part failure, but an engineering defect, and not correctible.  view

The fuel sending unit has become eratice since the vehicle was purchased used three years ago. at times it is impossible to know how much fuel remains in the tank. even after filling the tank the guage may read empty and the low fuel lamp will flash. i've read that this is a common major repair on this vehicle.  view

Coolant light coming on and noticed coolant always missing from coolant recovery tank. took vehicle to local gm dealer and after testing found that the intake manifold and head gaskets were leaking. after very little research on the internet i found alot of people are having the same problem. i contacted gm for assistance and was essentially told i was on my own they would pay nothing. gm acted as if i was the only one having the intake/head gasket problem. i have an uncle and a friend of mine that live in the same town i do that own a pontiac montana and both have had the same gasket problem. they both contacted gm and were told the same thing i was told. i feel like gm should acknowledge the problem with there 3.4 v6 engines, stand behind there product and pay for these repairs. i have always been an avid gm supporter but this really is begining to change my way of thinking.  view

Consumer received recall number 02v053000 concerning transmission gear shift. consumer took vehicle to dealer for recall repairs. the problem happened prior to recall. transmission gear shift was not completely in park, causing the vehicle to roll backward. since recall repairs were done the problem recurred.  view

2004 ford focus svt new on april 30; car is less than 20 days old exhibits "surging" between 2000-3500, all gears, all temperatures, light acceleration that surging could the car to lunge forward, causing an accident or fatality ford svt team (800-367-3788) and was told they are aware of the problem, but not currently working on a fix as "not enough.  view

Front seat belt retractors continually fail to retract seatbelt fully, usually leaving 8-10 inches of belt on the floor and sometimes hanging outside the door frame. this has been a re-occuring problem with too many to count failures. problem is temporarily alleviated by manually feeding the belt into the retractor.  view

The entire rear axle was replaced at the advice of jeep service. they claimed that the wheel bearings would not not seat in the axle as the "races" were worn beyond the point of holding them in. because i needed the vehicle for my business, i had no choice but to have them repair it while they had it apart as i did not have time to do the job myself. it was a three week wait for parts as it was. then i noticed the "musty" smell. upon futher investigation i discovered the entire jeep was saturated under the carpets on both sides. mold everywhere. no wonder my allergies were killing me. i've since gutted the vehicle and bleached the entire floor areas. i am now in the process of coming up with a solution to the problem so i can pass it on to other jeep owners. chrysler has a bulletin out on a procedeure to clean the a/c drain but it does not work as it comes back each year. i've found that gluing nylon screening in the air intake under the hood keeps all of the debris that clogs this drain tube out of the heater box. now i am working on a way to stop the water from running back into the dash area through the firewall where it drains out into the frame. not one dealership would talk to me about this. i know that they know about it because of the bulletin. also, i found that the "vents" behind the rear fixed glass on the cherokee have a small holding cup and a tube which the water that enters that area drains into, what i couldn't believe was that it drains into the rear of the vehicle, inside, which results in the entire rear of the vehicle becoming wet under the rear rug. this problem is solved by punching a hole through the floor and extending the factoy drain tube through the floor so the water drains outside the vehicle where it belongs. i am a car buff and pretty knowledgeable about repairs and i could not believe my eyes when i saw these design flaws. they are blatantly obvious.  view
