I have a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1/2 ton pickup with 29000 miles on it when the rear brake calipers froze up and ruined my rear brake pads. chevy says that this is not under warranty because of poor maintenance on my part. i did everything required in the owners manual. i have talked with three of my friends who have the same pickup and their rear brakes failed at lower mileages and were covered and the dealer also installed a special brake dirt cover to the rear brakes to help with the problem. i contend that this is a design defect in the rear disc brakes and can expect to replace my rear brakes in another 18000 t0 24000 miles. would you look into this matter for me.  view

Found both main brake lights inoperable at the same time. both bulbs needed replacement after just 2 years. bulbs also loose in sockets leading to intermittent operation and probable shortened bulb life. also noteworthy: 9 out of 10 suv/pickup trucks that i see with inoperable tail/driving lights are recent model gm products.  view

My truck caught on fire. it had not been driven for about 24 hours before the incident. i went out to get something out of my truck and everything was normal. thirty minutes later we heard a horn blaring outside. when my wife looked out the window, she yelled that our truck was on fire. the fire dept got here within 5 mins by then the hood had melted, the battery had exploded, the windshield blew in and one tire had exploded. the fire appeared to have started on the driver's side of the engine compartment. somewhere near the fuse box. the fire dept could not determine the exact cause.  view

In searching the internet, i've found there are many people who have suffered the same problems that i have had. i have a 1997 ford explorer eddie bauer edition. the climate control system failed in 1998 and i took it to les pinkam lincoln mercury in elizabethtown, ky for repair. without even looking at it, the technician told me that the blend air door had broken and it would costs $800 to repair it. thinking he was lying, i took it to bill collins ford in louisville, ky. again, the same results and repair estimate. technicians at both places, told me it's a common problem. i eventually had les pinkam repair it. it seems that ford would design a system that wouldn't require the complete removal of the dash to repair it, much continue with a design with so many problems. years later and the problem has happened again. in addition i came across tsb article number 98-23-20 in my searches, but couldn't find the article at your web-site. i also have had the transmission rebuilt twice and finally replaced it with one from a salvage yard. i couldn't see repairing it a third time when a ford technician and private yard couldn't fix it. both times within 13 months after repair, the car would suddenly completely fail and tach out as if it were in neutral. i could get it to do it with a ford technician and his code sensor plugged in. this has come close to having me get rear ended on the interstate 65, especially when its in cruise control. for no reason at all the transmission would completely disengage and the engine would almost completely tack out before i could hit the brake pedals to dis-engage. to make a long story short, i've spent almost $6000 in repairs since owning this vehicle. in addition, i've had it in for many recalls. all i've ever got out of ford or the dealers is, sorry about your luck. surely there is something your agency can do about this. my transmission problems, were pretty scary.  view

I had just purchased a 2001 audi s4 for close to $40,000. with 1100 miles on it my car was stolen in broad daylight approx 3 pm. upon further research, i learned that the factory passive alarm can be tricked into thinking it has been disarmed. a small hole near the door lock gains access to a rod that when lifted disarms the system as if a key were used, combine this action with the with removal of the ignition, and the vehicle can be started with a screw driver and driven away. i've also learned that vw/audi had the technology available to equip this model with an engine immobiliser as part of the oem alarm system. i'm aware of dozens of thefts of the audi s4 in particular and am reading of more thefts occurring weekly. just do a search on www.audiworld.com using the word "stolen" and you will see for yourself. my experience has been in the ny/nj metropolitan area. i think audi should be held responsible for this gross oversite on their part and offer a retrofit of some sort to protect my investment. i don't feel safe driving my vehicle freely anywhere i want without having to worry about it being stolen. this problem has reached epidemic proportions here.  view

Nhtsa campaign id number: 02v323000 when i received the letter from ford it said that the recall was for the air bag module. it did not say anything about just putting a plastic covering over the module. the module in my car was already shorted out and is no good. i made a complaint about his in early 2002. i spoke with an nhtsa investigator about this problem and months later is when the recall happened. but it not even a recall for a fix to the problem i already had. keeping the water out of a bad module is not helping me at all. i was under the impression that the module would be replaced. how can the dealer see that the air bag module is shorted out and just put a plastic covering on it and give it back to us with the air bag light still on?  view

I own a 2001 chrysler 300m which i purchased new a carmax chrysler, jeep dealership here in georgia. i have several complaints that i've tried to get repaired or complied with but with no success. 1. i read about and heard on the news about the recall on the front seat recliner assembly so i inquired with the dealer as to when i could bring the car in for compliance and was told i would receive a letter from chrysler when to bring it in. i have not received anything from chrysler to this date on any recalls. 2. the car has 62,000 + miles on it now but over the past 3yrs. i have complained about the transmission several times when delivering it to the dealer for maintenance. once they replaced the filter and fluid but on occasions it still makes some noises. 3. i have also complained about the excessive wind and exterior road noise that it makes. on the cars last maint visit. 12/16/03, 58595mi. i was told that all the door seals were bad and it would cost $350.00 in parts to fix. i also reported a burning smell, when the car is first started after sitting 2 hrs. or more, coming from the heat/air system. no problems could be found. these are just some of the complaints i have with this vehicle and it's mfr. will forward any future problems i may have.  view

Ford did not apply nhtsa recall 98v060 properly to my 1997 ford explorer vin 1fmdu34e2vza69400. the do not ground warning was applied to the incorrect bracket. when i attemped to jump start the vehicle, i used the fuel line bracket since there was no warning label. the braided fuel line covers overheated and melted the fuel line resulting in a significant leakage of fuel when the engine was running. the vehicle had to be towed. ford claims the recall was done properly. i have photographs which show it was not done properly. i believe that this poses a serious risk to the 300, 000+ vehicles that had this recall done. summary 1.the warning label was not attached to the correct bracket when the vehicle was serviced per the recall 2.there is no label in the engine compartment indicating that the revised alternator bolt is a jump start ground location 3.fords position is that the repairs were done properly. my contention is that they were not done properly. 4.this situation poses an imminent danger to drivers, passengers and bystanders. 5.there are still significant numbers of these vehicles on the road. 6.ford should provide a label indicating that the alternator bolt is a ground location and they should check vehicles that were subject to this recall to ensure that the labels were properly applied.  view

I have a 1999 2.7l dodge intrepid that is currently being investigated for possible warranty denial on an engine failure. we had a sensor replaced in november 18 2003 along with an oil change and a transmission change. after this service through the dodge dealership in our area we noted that the oil light was flickering whilst idling and when the engine was warm. we were assured that it was just a sensor issue and they promptly checked the oil level a month ago to assure us the oil was still in the engine. the engine began ticking at high speeds and had continued to get worse. the engine has a loud knocking noise that is predominent as soon as i turn on the engine. in order to not risk the safety of my two young children we had the vehicle towed to the dealership. they have now concluded that there was sludge in the engine and that an inspector will need to determine if the extended warranty or the basic warranty that is still affective will cover the costs. upon reading sites on this vehicle it is almost predetermined that they will refuse to cover the cost under our warranty. what rights do we have if this happens? we still owe money on the vehicle and cannot afford the rental and the cost to repair the vehicle. and if chrysler is aware of this issue surely this should have been a problem that the local dealership could have determined before our engine became damaged?  view

I own a 2002 dodge durango with 35,000 miles that has always been properly maintained. i have already had the dealer replace 2 worn ball joints last week, i've had the brake pads replaced twice, and one rotor on one side (in front) turned, and i am still hearing strange noises. i would like an investigation done on my vehicle, as i am driving my daughter and myself around everyday, and my factory warranty is about to expire. its obvious daimler chrysler is not concerned with saving peoples lives, as i have just witnessed the march third evening edition of cbs news with dan rather. i am rather concerned that the transportation safety administration has let daimler chrysler get away with not recalling these problems considering the large amount of complaints with these suspension systems. please help me and contact me. thank you. email me at jcookie100@earthlink.net or phone me (858)220-0419. im not real sure what to do at this point. thank you. signed, a concerned parent and driver.  view

Consumer complained about a ball joint problem. consumer took the vehicle to an independent tire shop to get the tires balanced and aligned and it was determined that ball joints were defective. the vehicle could not be aligned due to the ball joints. the dodge dealer denied that there was a problem with the ball joints. finally the dealer found play on one side and wanted to replace both upper ball joints. (the dealer rep stated that they were trained to check them a certain way and they would not have found play the way that they were checking them) the transmission would intermittently not upshift, however the dealer was unable to duplicate.  view

The nut securing the front control arm to the spindle may lose its initial axial tension which could cause the steering wheel to go out of alignment. it also leads to a potential front end noise. consumer received recall regarding the nut; however, as consumer called dealer and said that they can perform repairs as per agreement with nhtsa. consumer is just asking to get the nut and let a local mechanic perform the replacement.  view

The bracket that holds the drivers seat down is made out of plastic and it broke when i sat in it and leaned back in the seat. i am a 6'3" man that only weights about 190 lbs., it should not have broke. it concerns me because if all i did was lean back in the seat....what will happen in a auto accident?  view

While attempting to depart from picking up out travel trailer, both the power steering and brakes went out on our 2500 4 wheel drive suburban. the only thing that stopped the suburban was the trailer's brakes. luckly we were still in the parking lot and therefore going slow. upon exaimination, i pulled the surpinetine belt off and the power steering pully and shaft came off. from what i understand the steering and the brakes are connected. this can also happen when the brake booster goes out. the good thing is that this not only happened in town but not on the freeway going down a grade pulling a 9,000 lbs trailer. i have replaced the power steering pump and am in the process of having the brakes bleed as they don't "feel" right.  view

Britax marathon convertible child safety seat can be easily loosened by my 2 year old. the harness adjuster lever is too close to the child. i have tightened the straps very tight and all he has to do is reach his arm forward and pull the harness adjuster lever and with the strain on the straps, the straps completely loosen instantly!  view

I have been working with dodge chrysler daimler to resolve a problem with our cruise control. the safety issue is that you are never sure how the cruise control will respond. sometimes you notice cars and truck whizzing by and you're holding up the traffic. based the dealers repeated attempts to diagnose and fix the problem and the manufacturer's bulletin on how to try to remedy the problem by "re training the computer", i believe the real fix goes back to the computer program and sensors used in the system. can you please check into this issue for me and let me know what your advise is? copy of part of the correspondence to dealer follows: dodge country of appleton 4400 west college avenue as you can confirm we have had our 2003 dodge dakota in three or more times now to try and fix the cruise control. (vin 1d7hg38xx3s185514). there are basically two main symptoms: 1) unexpected shift into high gear when the vehicle is on cruise control - these events do not seem to coincide with any specific road condition. 2) non - responsive cruise control - the vehicle speed drifts down 10 mph or more off of set point on a very gradual incline with no response at all by the cruise control. once you reach level road the speed will very slowly creep up over what seems like several miles. this does not happen consistently or repeat under any specific road condition. sometimes at 60 - 70 mph on both gentle and steep inclines the cruise works fine. speed may only drop of one or two mph and the engine doesn't even shift into a higher gear. yet under identical conditions, sometimes at the same speeds of 60 - 70 mph the cruise will respond by kicking into the next higher gear and other times the cruise will not respond at all let the speed drop down 10mph. too slow a speed is just as dangerous as too fast a speed. another person i asked with an identical vehicle indicated similar problems.  view
