Seepage in steering linkage system causes steering to lock up/loss of control.  view

While driving at any speed and when shifting from first to second gear vehicle stalled. consumer had a certified mechanic check the vehicle, and was told that transmission needed to be replaced.  view

Vehicle was being driven at approximately 20 mph, when brakes were applied, vehicle did not stop. vehicle was towed to the dealership. dealer was unable to duplicate the problem, and technician said they could not fix the problem. owner was frustrated.  view

On the 2 ford focus zx3s i owned both exhibited a hesitation problem when the fuel gauge read 1/4 tank of gas or less. one focus was sold, while the other focus had the fuel pump replaced (both vehicles' warranties had expired). there were never any accidents due to the problem, fortunately the problems arose in the neighborhood or on the open highway.  view

Vehicle has the same problem as mentioned in nhtsa recall 95v134000. the affected vehicles were built with outer tie rod ends with incorrect taper ball studs. the incorrect taper ball studs could fracture within 50,000 miles.  view

Rear driver's side speaker caught on fire while driving. dealership indicated that this was caused by a power surge in the system. the speakers were original equipment.  view

While driving at high speed consumer's vehicle was rear ended. upon impact, neither air bag deployed. consumer sustained injuries, and was hospitalized for one week. police report and pictures were available.  view

Steering column lock on my 2000 chevrolet corvette coupe. i bought the car in august 2003 from a local dealer. on tuesday 11/25/03 my car's steering wheel would not unlock after i inserted the key into the ignition. the car started but the steering wheel could not be moved in either direction. since i could not steer the car i had it towed about 5 miles to henderson chevrolet. they said i had two choices. 1) for $498 i could have the problem repaired but the replaced parts could fail causing the problem to occur again, or 2) for $595 the dealer would install a mechanism that would render the steering column lock inoperable. i opted for option 2. on wednesday 11/26/03, after i picked up my car from henderson chevrolet, i called customer service at gm and explained my problem. gm said they would contact gm's service manager for my area and call me back. on tuesday 12/2/03 gm called me. i told gm i had to pay $595 to get my car "repaired." the lady at gm said she would call gm's area service manager again and then contact me on friday 12/5/03. i have my doubts, but even if gm agrees to reimburse me for the $595 repair bill plus the $32 rental car cost, the point is that there's a defect in the car and gm seems unable/unwilling to fix it properly. your web site shows a tsb for this problem and i think there was a limited recall done by gm. henderson chevrolet put my car's vin in their computer but they said my car did not meet the recall criteria to be repaired at no charge. it makes no sense to have to pay any money, let alone $595, to disable my car's theft deterrent system. i would like gm/chevrolet to fix my car, at no charge, so that the steering column lock works properly without having to worry about a future failure that makes steering impossible. gm and their dealers are well aware of this problem and have been for quite some time, but the problem still exists. they must be too busy profiting from customers who have to pay to disable a security feature.  view

I have a 2003 dodge ram 1500 quad cab with just over 6,000 miles on it. at around 5,000 miles the brake pedal started to vibrate under braking and vibration could be felt in the steering wheel. about 200 miles later the brakes started squeaking. currently, i suspect the front rotors to be warped and have seen multiple complaints online by other ram owners with similar issues.  view

The hatch door latch of my 98 honda crv is broken. this has been slowly deteriorating for some time, and is now completely defective. only the glass hatch window is holding the door shut. the vehicle/hatch door have not withstood any extreme or unusual use, nor has that part of the vehicle sustained damage in an accident. this is a safety defect that the manufacturer should investigate and repair.  view

1997 ford f250hd mileage of 40,036 and garage kept exhaust manifold rusted, corroded and cracked-bolts rusted to the manifold, can't get spark plugs out because rusted to the head - motor mount steel is rusted along with the bolts, valve cover has rust holes and corrosion, coil that bolts onto the valve cover is swollen from rust and corrosion- bolts have popped out and are rusted, all emissions tubes are rusted through and rusted together, oil pan bolts are all rusted and disintegrated, transmission lines are rusted into the radiator, steering gearbox is severely corroded and bolts are rusting off, power steering lines and power steering are rusted through, airconditioning lines are rusted through, *** lines are rusted through and proportionate valve for brakes is severely rusted*****, dust covers on front wheels rusted through, front drive shaft and universal joint are severely rusted, all aluminum parts and brackets are oxidized, and the core supports are rusted through. i have contacted the dealership where bought the truck new and ford customer service and have been told this is not their problems because it is not under warranty anymore. the engine in a 6 year old vehicle should not be rusted like this. i have pictures of the damage - in the pictures you can see the ford part stickers are like new while everything around them is rusted.  view

While driving the vehicle at an undetermined speed the vehicle stalled, causing the consumer to pull off the road. the consumer took the vehicle to a mechanic, who informed the owner that the intake manifold had failed. please add any additional information.  view

I have a 2001 volkswagen golf with the tdi engine (engine code alh). last night and this morning i had problems with the ecu power relay ("relay 109"). symptoms are sudden stalling of the engine with the inability to restart for 3-5 minutes. this morning during my morning commute my engine stalled 4 times, 3 of which were on an extremely busy freeway during rush hour traffic. this is a known and well documented problem with the tdi engine. there have been a large number of reports of this problem (see http://forums.tdiclub.com and search for "relay 109" for examples). volkswagen has released an updated relay which fixes this failure mode. luckily i was aware of this problem so i was able to purchase a replacement and install it myself. vw knows about this problem and it is a severe safety issue... the engine will stop running without warning and may not be restarted for several minutes. luckily this morning i was only traveling at approximately 15 mph when the first stall happened. i recognized the problem and after i was able to restart my engine and continue on, i got into the right-hand lane, assuming that it would happen again. the next time it happened i was traveling at about 55 mph, and fortunately i was prepared to stop the car safely. this happens to vws with tdi engines up to and including the 2001 model year. the old relay part number is 357906381a and the new replacement is 1j0906381a. this situation may not be considered serious since the replacement part is only about $25 and installation takes less than 10 minutes, but i feel that it is a serious safety issue.  view

When driving the vehicle in the parking lot, the steering wheel failed causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. the consumer towed the vehicle in to be inspected. the mechanic informed the owner, that the steering column bolt had snapped. please provide any further details. while pulling out of the gas station consumer heard a noise coming from underneath the vehicle. consumer later could not steer vehicle and believes that the brakes went out as well. consumer exited vehicle and picked up the tensioner off the ground. consumer still has broken parts and plans to hold them for another 30 days. mechanic informed consumer that the steering column bolt on vehicle had snapped.  view

The key sticks in the ignition and fails to turn. the consumer has to pound and play with the key in the ignition to release it. the dealership indicated that is due to a bad ignition cylinder and it needed to be replaced. they also indicated that this is a common failure with this part. please provide more information.  view

While driving approximately 30 mph, the side air bag deployed inadvertently. as a result the vehicle swerved to the right and hit a curb. the vehicle sustain damage to the passenger side front tire, rim and suspension.  view

The brake pedal when it was depressed went to the floor and smoke started coming from under the van. this occurred while in park with the engine still running. upon inspection of the vehicle by a mechanic, they noticed a pin hole in the brake line. there's a recall for the brake line 02v10100, which the dealership did inspect the van's brake line as indicated in the recall letter, but no problem was found at that time so the part wasn't replaced.  view

Windshield wipers went out with warning. sometimes windshield wipers won't come on. mechanic says "there is a recall for the same windshield wiper motor", but it is on 1997, s10 models. consumer believes his car is having the exact same problem.  view

While traveling 40 mph driver attempted to shift from third gear to fourth gear and throttle stuck. consumer immediately put the gear shift into neutral to release the throttle. vehicle was taken to the dealership.  view

Rear left door has a quarter of an inch gap between the frame and the door. this allows air and sometimes water to enter into compartment.  view

When depressing the brakes at any speed, they would fade. the pedal travel increased and descended further before the brakes responded. the dealership had been contacted. there was brake pedal thickness. (the front pads were 10mm thick and the rear was 8mm) also, the blinkers did not work properly.  view

While driving at low speeds a loud grinding and thumping noises could be heard. the dealer determined that the upper ball joints were worn out and replaced the right upper control arm assembly. the consumer stated with out having read the newspaper they would not have been aware of the problem.  view

Vehicle had been losing coolant since 1998. vehicle had been to dealer for repairs at least seven times. the gas recirculation valve (egr) port was made of plastic, and when it melted, coolant seeped into the engine.  view

Service engine soon light keeps coming on. car was running at extremely high rpms at times. gas mileage was significantly lower than in the past. dodge stated originally that the problem was the spark plugs. replaced all spark plugs. light came back on two weeks later. they then stated it was a problem with the pulley on the end of the crank shaft that was causing the engine to misfire and trigger the light to come on. after 10 additional days in the shop, they replaced the part. today the light came on again and as of now are unsure what the problem is. today is the 18th day it has been in the shop in the past 6 weeks.  view

Chevrolet s10, 1998, plastic leather on driver door that hold door lock rod secure breaks. doors lock and can only be opened with the key. inner last is non-functioning trapping the driver in until the door is unlocked from the out side.  view

While driving on the highway my 2000 maxima suddenly spun out of control for no apparent reason. the vehicle spun around several times and down into a twenty foot ditch, colliding with several trees. the air bag never deployed.  view

Karen quinn of subaru of america assured me that i can drive my 2003 subaru impreza with "check engine" light on for a period of two weeks without any concern. as a result, the vehicle stalled the "check engine" light was blinking and i was in danger. at a later time she falsified the records and had no recollection of such conversation.  view

I am concerned about fuel tank fires started by rear end collisions. all research i have done states that ford is recalling police cars only. as a consumer i think ford owes it to the public to recall all ford crown victoria's. my family is more important then their bottom line. my wife and i do not feel safe driving our children around in this car. ford needs to acknowledge they are putting out an unsafe product.  view

My name is tracy messel and i purchased a 2003 honda accord coupe ex (2-door coupe) from the madison honda dealer located in madison, nj in april of 2003. a few months after i purchased my new car i realized that my car was pulling to the right side of the road. i took my car into honda and they rotated my tires telling me that the problem wasn't an alignment issue but balancing of the tires. i drove my car and realized that is was pulling to the left side of the road, i took my car in again and they re-rotated and balanced my tires. after that, my car started pulling to the right side of the road. i then took my car in again stating that i wanted to have the tires checked out as it appeared that the problem followed the tires. they said the tires were fine and there was something off in my front suspension that they re-adjusted. i drove my car after the adjustment to discover that the car still pulled to the right side of the road. i took it in yet again and drove with a mechanic who told me that this was normal for all 2003 accords to pull to the right side of the road and there was nothing more that they could do as my car was within their specifications. not being satisfied i kept requesting to speak to more individuals within the honda organization only to be told they would do nothing more, that pulling to the right is normal on all cars. i am not satisfied with the answer that honda had given me and i wanted to raise this issue to the national security council as i think this is a very serious risk if my car is pulling to the right side of the road. i could be putting not only myself at danger but others on the road around me. any response would be appreciated. thanks!  view

While traveling, the consumer noticed the trailer roller had fallen off without warning. (three rollers were found missing) that apparently fell off while being towed and caused a roadway hazard. the rollers fell off after deterioration of a metal washer used to hold the rollers on the trailer. (64 washers on the trailer were found to be rusted and was ready to fail) the consumer was told that due to the rust, it was not covered under warranty. year-2000  view

After driving vehicle consumer kept hearing a humming sound coming from the front end. upon closer inspection, consumer found that abs control module was still running, even with the engine off. consumer had to disconnect the module to keep from draining the battery.  view

Vehicle was taken to the dealer for recall# 03v281000 repairs concerning high back seat failure. after the repairs were done, driver's seat back broke and fell all the way back. dealer was refusing to do anymore repairs to the vehicle.  view

Wheel sheared off completely from the hub while driving. no one was able to offer any explanation as to how the wheel could have separated from the hub. consumer felt chrysler should have covered the $398.41 repair bill.  view

Problem with exhaust pipe on muffler. the consumer was referred to a muffler shop to have a patch put on the front header pipe and was not given any option to have it fixed correctly  view

Whenever consumer turned the key to start the engine, there was a loud rattling sound coming from the engine. spark plugs were removed, that were covered with anti freeze. engine head gaskets were leaking, and that caused the engine to throw a rod. ford has a current technical service bulletin concerning this engine problem.  view

1999 dodge durango owner - upper and lower ball joint replacement - noticed tire wearing on the inside of both front tires (tires only had 17,000 miles on them). local mechanic notice alot of play in ball joints. replaced upper and lower ball joints and cost $750.00.  view

I am having trouble with my 2000 silverado abs speed sensor and gm will not replace the sensor or fix the problem. this is a problem that is occurring on many trucks and seems to be something gm should consider having a recall on.  view

While driving 65 mph steering wheel was loose, causing the driver to hit a concrete barrier. driver drove the vehicle to the dealer for analysis, and mechanic could not duplicate the problem.  view

The vehicle was parked and the consumer noticed oil was leaking from underneath the vehicle. the consumer had taken the vehicle to the dealer for analysis and the mechanic noticed that the head gasket needed to be replaced due to deterioration. the vehicle had also been losing coolant for the past year and exhibited a coolant smell.  view

While driving at 65 mph consumer heard a flapping sound coming from the rear of vehicle. consumer parked on the shoulder of the highway and inspected the vehicle, discovered that rear right tire collapsed. vehicle was taken to the dealer, who claimed that the tire was punctured which caused it to collapse. the dealer stated that the tire was probably punctured before the sidewall collapsed, but the sidewall should not have ever collapsed.  view

In early october 2003 the electronic throttle system (ets) light appeared on my car's panel. this affected the drivability of the vehicle. i purchased an additional warranty for my vehicle when i bought the car in may 2000. the dealer indicated that my warranty would not cover this problem and that it would cost approximately $900 to repair it. i declined the service. the light continues to come on frequently (i.e., every 2nd or 3rd day of the week). when this happens, i will pull over and turn off the car for a moment. when i start it up again, the light does not appear and drivability is normal. as a volvo owner for the past 17 years, i have not experienced any similar malfunctions. i have owned a 1982 volvo 240, a 1992 volvo 240 and my current volvo s70. i would appreciate if you would research this malfunction to determine if you have received (or the manufacturer) complaints from other volvo owners. thank you for your help.  view

I have a 97 chevrolet lumina and started experiencing steering tightness when turning left. i heard about a re-call so i took my car to the chevrolet dealer for help. i asked them if they could check the lower pinion bearing to see if that was the problem. they told me they knew nothing about any recall and said that my power steering pump was out. they couldn't get the part for a week. i was afraid to continue driving it the way it was so my husband changed the pump. there was no difference in the steering. i took it back to the dealer, they said the pump was fine but they would have to flush the system because parts from the pump probably got into the rack. i again explained to them about the upcoming recall and they told me it couldn't be the problem. it was going to be a couple of days before they could get my car in to flush out the system and i asked them if it was safe to drive it the way it was and they told me it wouldn't be a problem. that next day when i was driving my car the steering completely went out. the steering wheel just started spinning. i think i am lucky to be alive. i had to have it towed to them.they told me that the steering column broke and that it still had nothing to do with any recall. they are charging 600.00 for what they fixed. i asked them if i could have the old rack to have the lpb checked out to see if it was bad but they didn't have the part any more, they sent it to where ever they have them re-built. they are going to try and get it back. when they took my car for a test drive after replacing the rack they said that the airbag warning light came on and now want to charge me another 325.00 to fix that. of course again, nothing to do with changing the rack. can you tell me if any of this has anything to do with the lpb? i am at a loss, i have read other complaints and to me this sounds about the same.  view

My 2000 ford zx2 idler pulley broke causing damage to the belt tensioner and water pump housing. the mechanic says that this is very unusual, he has never heard of such problems with any vehicle. i don't know if this is a fluke or a design flaw. could you check into it.  view

Intermittent problem in which engine will race when applying brakes, and foot off of gas pedal. usually occurs when stopping at stop sign or pulling into parking place. car will come to almost complete stop and then the engine will race and the car will lurch forward, and brakes cannot stop car. brake pedal will go all the way to the floor without stopping vehicle. i have had to shift into neutral or park to stop the vehicle. needless to say this is a very unsafe condition.ar is at ford dealer presently.  view

In nov. 2002, i had an exhaust manifold replaced at dealership due to crack. in oct. 2003, the auto was in for a routine maintenance (oil, check exhaust) and i was informed that the manifold needs to be replaced due to crack and missing bolt. warranty is no longer in effect, since i have driven 15,000 miles and it was a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty.  view

Mouse infestation of '99 honda covic. purchased car in july 1999, found mouse evidence within two months, caught mouse with trap. found more evidence summer 2003, set traps and caught 10-12 mice. took car into dealer for 30,000 maintenance and to fix heater (which was plugged with something). dealer shop removed three more mice from air intake/heater motor area. with hantivirus from mice droppings a real threat in the pacific northwest, safety is an issue. the car was never left open when parked. dealer claimed to have found glass in car and suspected us of breaking glass and leaving car exposed to outside critters.not true, the mice are entering by some entrance "not located by honda dealer". repairman told wife that he had seen "lot's of mice infestations", but changed his story when his boss corrected him and gave him a dirty look. we suspect that the problem may be more widespread than honda will admit.  view

I have noticed a problem with steering control when driving over rough roads...like railroad tracks. the steering will intermittently freeze up and it feels like the wheel bounce pulses thru the steering system when doing so. my vehicle also has managed to chew up my front tires within less than 30,000 miles. i find this terrible. i have chatted online w/ many others who had experienced the same tire wear. the tires in question are general grabber aw's. at this point i don't believe it is the tires that were defective. a friend with a similar dump-plow truck had a steering stabilizer on his while mine did not have one on as standard. i really felt it should have had one. it now does! so, i've since had the front end realigned and had two new grabber tr's put on since i was told by a ford dealer they no longer were making the others. i don't know how long these will last? i feel ford should have made it right to the owners as this was clearly a defective steering . to exacerbate the problem, i have those shiny aluminum rims that do not allow owners to rotate their tires with out/ breaking them down. this was clearly a goof on ford's part for not making allowances for this.  view

Loose brakes, transmission slips, accident and airbags did not deploy it takes a long distance to stop. brakes are not abs. 9/11 truck pulled out in front of me, stomped on brake, wheels did not lock, car did not stop rolling and i hit the vehicle. transmission always slips, especially at 30 mph. i have been in two frontal hits and airbags did not deploy. dealer has been told about the problem numerous times.  view

In apirl 1996 i purchased a new 1996 dodge intrepid (vin 2b3hd56f3th52925) from philips motors in philip sd. after approximately 2 years and 30,000 miles i began to notice a grinding noise and clunking in the steering while driving the vehicle from a "cold soak" condition. after approximately 5 minutes and once the car warmed up, the noise would cease. over the course of the past 5 years i have taken the vehicle to five different repair shops in an attempt to isolate and repair the problem. only when i moved to germany (current assignment in the usaf) did a german mechanic discovered the problem; worn rack and pinion steering gear bushing which are allowing the entire unit to shift left and right whenever the steeringwheel is moved. over the past five years i've lived with this problem, i've noticed a continued degredation is steering crispness and increase noise as described above. only when i researched the problem on the internet did i find 2 service recalls for this problem (19-03-97a and 19-001-01). the problem has gotten so bad, about 3 weeks ago i nearly lost control of the car in a sharp turn on a country road here in germany. i was able to recover from the turn (with the assistance of the front tire hitting the curb and bouncing me back into the lane) -- no one was hurt and the car (except the tire) was undamaged. i find it amazing that published service bulletins go un-noticed and high risk components such as steering systems go un-recalled despite potentially catastrophic consequences. my particular problem is further exasperated by the high speed nature of german autobahns.  view

We purchased our 1996 caravan new and we have had to replace the transmission 3 times (of those 1 time was rebuilt under manufacturer warranty) the last time we had rebuilt was in may 2003 and is already starting to act up again, it is slipping in first gear (between 10-35 mph). we have had the fuel pump replaced twice; we are now having problems with gasoline smell coming from under hood. the timing belt just broke this week. we have numerous oil leaks; we are averaging 3-4 quarts of oil per week; we had one mechanic put dye in the oil and he had us drive it for a few days and then checked it and stated there was 4-5 oil leaks and we would be better off to buy a new car; and we have been told this by several mechanics due to the multple problems we have had. we have also had several problems with air conditioner; and the serpentine belt broke several times under warranty and just had to replace it again this week along with the timing belt and cam seals. we had about 2 pages of of warranty work done and right after warranty ran out it went down hill from there. we also had to replace the clock spring and 6 months later there was a recall on the clock spring and now i cannot find my receipt. we are very unhappy with this vehicle and it has more problems than we can count and we very dissappointed that we paid over $18000 for a vehicle and had to put approx more than $4000 in unneccesary repairs that should have never happened. we have been told by several mechanics that the transmissions in these caravans are junk and there aer always problems with them and this doesnt seem very fair to us as consumers because we put out trust into dodge/chrysler corp and we ended up with a lemon. last year i sent an email to chryler and explained the problems and they basicly just blew us off, of course because it wasnt there problem now since the warranty was expired, i will say this i will never buy another chrysler product again.  view

Vehicle has suddenly stalled in traffic several times. was travelling at approx 35-45mph. this happened twice. veh was taken to dealer, who re-programmed the computer. several months have passed without incident, problem has occurred again. very concerned that when engine stalls, i lose power steering and may not be able to turn off the road before being struck from the rear. each time this has occurred i have been able to pull into the median or a side street. but i wonder what will happen if i am in the middle lane???  view

Many jeep wranglers built before 2001 have a defective manifold that cracks, causing exhaust problems. this is the reason jeep completely redesigned the manifold in the newer models. they have yet to send out a recall to fix this problem. when i first noticed the loud noise resulting from the cracked manifold, my car had approximately 37,000 miles on it. not high mileage by any means. the main concern i have with this problem is the health hazard it poses to the driver. the section of the wrangler where the cracked manifold is located is underneath the front of the car, where exhaust fumes leaking from it seep up into the cabin very easily, especially when stopped at lights or in heavy traffic. i believe the manufacturers of jeep are very aware of this problem but don't care to do anything about it.  view

Since purchasing my 2003 saab 9-3 in june the car has stalled 4 times while either at stop lights or sitting in traffic. once the car stalled while going 40 mph. i've taken the car to the dealership several times to have the problem corrected. each time a software upgrade is performed. and every time i contact the service dept they are surprised as to this occurrence.  view

2003 toyota 4runner v8/awd w/ under 5,000 miles at highway speeds there is a vibration and low frequency "roaring" noise that appears to come from the from axle/differential. sound ceases when coasting. noise and vibration was noticed within first 500 miles of ownership and is increasingly getting worst. thought to be tires which were rotated and did not solve problem. dealer analyzed and stated this is a normal working noise from the differential which has aluminum parts. noise is getting louder. concern there is a defect and safety issue.  view

Check gauges light came on with no warning. all gauges were normal. a loud rattling sound was followed by the oil pressure dropping to zero and the engine failed. vehicle has been towed to wiesner dodge in rosenberg, texas. dealer claimed sludge in the oil caused the failure. i have regular documented oil change receipts. payment of repair (est. $6000) is pending meeting with warranty adjuster. how can our federally funded agencies ignore the vast multitude of complaints on this problem without investigating?????  view

The consumer was contacted regarding recall 03281000 related to the seat back frame. the vehicle seat never exhibited any symptoms of the recall prior to the vehicle being taken to the dealer. after the recall was performed the consumer noticed instability in the driver's seat. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. the dealer indicated that the repairs they performed did not cause the instability and that it may be the wearing of the truck that caused it. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that it sounded like the recall remedy failed and that they would send a complaint for. the consumer has not received the form. the warranty on the vehicle expired. dealer stated nothing could be done.  view

1999 dodge intrepid 2.7 l engine failure oil had been changed every 3000 miles(i have proof) i was driving 50 mph when engine failed very little warning.  view
