I have a 2004 gs sedan with about 2000 miles on it purchased in october 2003. in the last few days i have had three occasions when the accelerator floor boarded itself with no action on my part to cause such behavior. on one occasion the car was in cruise control at about 60, and accelerated to 90 before i could get the car under control. pushing the brake pedal did not disengage the action. the second time the car was in cruise control at about 50 and the same thing happen as i gently pressed the accelerator to pass a car. the accelerator unexpected went to the floor, with resultant very sharp acceleration. this time i had to turn the ignition off, and coast to the side of the road. the car would not start since the accelerator was floorboarded. finally got the accelerator to break lose by using the edge of my shoe sole and the car would restart, and then behaved normally for a period of time. the third time i was not in cruise control, had slowed for an exit ramp, and then gently pushed the accelerator to speed up. again the accelerator floorboarded itself, with very sharp acceleration. i disengaged the behavior by again lifting the accelerator with the edge of my shoe. one could feel a pop each time the accelerator was lifted with the shoe. took the car to the dealer who has now had it five days. says he has not seen this behavior and his position is that unless he can replicate it himself there are no repairs to make. i will not take car back until dealer signs a letter validating that i consider the car unsafe to drive and that he will assume any liability for accidents related to the problem. expect that this will lead to an impasse with the dealer.  view

I own a 1997 mazda 626 lx, which i bought used with 36,000 miles. at approximately 60,000 miles the transmission seized up, stranding my wife and i. had car towed to dealership, where they informed us we needed a new transmission. their exact words were: "we have good news and bad news. the bad news is that your warranty has expired. the good news is that we have a new transmission in stock." we then shopped around and found a less expensive transmission shop that gave us a one year guarantee, and came recommended by a mechanic friend of ours. one year and two weeks later, the transmission is overheating on long drives, spewing transmission fluid out the vent cap. mechanics tell us we need a new torque converter, they think. in any case, we'll probably need another transmission soon. we're dumping the heap and buying a toyota camry. i'm appalled to see page after page of nearly identical complaints about the 1994 - 1998 626s. mazda does not acknowledge the problem. how dare mazda/ford do this to hard working folks who just want to drive a dependable vehicle?  view

Over a year and 1/2, had multiple (at least 10) incidents of vehicle stalling while slowing down, at turns or traffic lights. resulted in loss of power steering, brakes, and temporary loss of control onto next lane; luckily, no accidents. multiple trips to plymouth dealership, all inspections and costly empirical repairs are fruitless, until ais (automatic idle speed) motor replaced (throttle body cleaned, also). the mechanic stated he had seen this problem in his own plymouth! this failure has not recurred in the 3 years since making the ais motor the likely cause of the problem. this is simply a follow-up, hopefully of some use to drivers and mechanics.  view

Abs wheel speed sensors 1999 chevrolet silverado - abs kicks in when slowing to low speed (no abs or brake lights come on). very dangerous! you have no control of the vehicle when this happens. i called several local chevrolet dealerships about this problem and they are so familiar with the problem that they can tell you right away how long it will take to fix and how much it will cost (just by me telling them what the vehicle is doing). i was pulling into a parking lot, going less than 5 mph and the truck did not stop, i bounced off of the curb - due to the abs kicking in when it did not need to. if i was slowing for traffic, i have no doubt that i would have hit the person in front of me! this is a very common problem (i have since researched this problem on the internet) and a serious one - this needs addressed by chevrolet as soon as possible. my truck only has 57,000 miles on it - the cost of repair will cost up to $800 or more. the truck is unsafe to drive. any response to this problem would be greatly appreciated. thank you.  view

I have a jayco motorhome on a ford e450 chassis, original. tires michelin 225/75 with load factor e. max load of the tires is 9880lbs, my actual rear axle weight 9270 (static and motorhome empty with no water, fuel tank 1/3 full) according to michelin that is asking for tire failure ( had 2 already) because the dynamic loads (going down the street, bumps - uphill - downhill- sideloads) will be over the tire limit. that's the reason the law requires pass, cars and light trucks to have a 16% reserve capacity; mine is down to about 2%. with full fuel and water tank, little bit of staff loaded for vacation or putting anything on the trailer hitch (boat or even loaded bike rack) i am overweight for the existing tires and max rear axle weight i know that is not an issue ford has to deal but jayco.but i would very much appreciate your expertise about what to do (is that motorhome a risk to drive , maybe unsafe?) is there any means to increase the max rear axle weight on that e450 chassis? any way i could put on a different tire size (enough room on the rim / wheel-well;that would increase the max tire load about 1000lbs - but is that legal and doable, especially. with the dual tires. i am looking forward to your answer  view

1999 bonneville; 58,000 miles; it had been stalling intermittently for several weeks -- especially during turns. before i could take it to the dealer, the car loses power on hwy 63; fortunately, i was able to pull over. the mechanic reports engine has locked up because coolant has leaked into the engine due to a known problem by gm of coolant leaking into engine and thus destroying the engine. total costs to replace the engine, the manifold and damaged the starter amounted to a repair bill of $5300 after a 10% existing customer discount plus state taxes. i checked the odi databases for '99 bonneville's and almost a 1/3 of the 111 complaints relate to the same problems i had before my car engine was damaged and similar problems of coolant leaks into the engine. does there have to be a injury before the nhtsa will act? why did the recent recall for the 2000 and newer models not cover the 1999's when gm has known of this issue of coolant leaking into the engine since the 1995/96 model year? please see my website for the analysis of the 1999 complaints http://www.missouri.edu/~ryh352/2003/bonne.htm i, of course, want my $5,300 returned from gm. i also think it only fair that the recall extend to 1998 and 1999 bonneville owners with less then 100,000 miles on their car and gm repair those cars free.  view

We are on our third motor for a toyota sienna 1998 van, purchased new. several months ago, we had the motor replaced. we were charged $4-500, though toyota handled it under warranty. now, 10,000 miles later, we must replace the engine again, at a cost of $6000. the problem, again, is 'sludge'. we are also, like others filing complaints on your site and others, being harassed by the dealership, who claim we have "never changed the oil." for argument, let's say this is true. in 10,000 miles, you will utterly destroy a new engine if you miss an oil change, recommended for between 5,000 and 7500 miles? i believe the public has been sold a defective design, and that the company, deliberately or not, is refusing to take owner complaints seriously.  view

Problem is not with car seat but seat belt on the honda odyessy 1999. the middle row, passenger side seat belt has failed three times. it losses spring action, and has been replaced three times by the honda dealership in the past 6 months. our four year old sits in the seat with a booster. attending a car seat seminar through the county we live in, they stated that once the belt is fastened it must be fully extended to the locked position. with the first two replacements of the seat belt the dealership told me it was correct to extend and lock the seat belt. upon the last replacement they recommended that we do not extend and lock the seat belt. we feel this is not proper operation for full safety. we also fear for our child's safety if we do extend and lock the belt, due to the three failures.  view

Tie rod end failure when taking left hand turn at low speed. vehicle only had 44,000 original miles! dealership (drum hill ford) and manufacturer (ford) refuse to accept responsibility since the vehicle is off warranty and the repair was done by a non-dealer (emergency repair). customer wants ford to inspect part, pay for repairs, and replace other tie rod end. dealer and manufacturer refused since they apparently don't care about customer safety. customer is very disappointed with quality of vehicle and lack of safety consideration by dealership and manufacturer.  view

My 11-month old 2003 chevrolet trailblazer has had multiple quality problems, twice affecting my safety. most of the problems have been electrical in nature. the 4wd has become inoperable numerous times, once while driving in snow. in another incident during a severe thunderstorm at night the air conditioner (a/c) failed and i was unable to defrost my windshield in order to see. after one dealer failed to diagnose the 4wd problem, another dealer replaced my ignition switch because the technician said i had no power at all going to the "rear grid." i continue to have intermittent electrical problems, including near stalling at a traffic light, and ongoing 4wd failures. the car also has very jerky motion when in 4wd reverse, of course, when the 4wd is working at all. the dealer told me that was normal and now i see there is a service bulletin on the problem.  view

Honda 2003 accord is equipped with a design defect of costly and potentially harmful, from a safety standpoint, defect. the lower grill on the front bumper is designed in such a way that any road debris smaller than a 16" x 8" concrete block can enter and damage a fully-exposed and unprotected air conditioning (ac) condenser. it is clearly unprotected from the harsh outside elements. the ac is an integral part of the safety of this automobile in that to clear the windshield from any moisture on the inner surface, the ac must be acting in proper fashion. if a car's inside glasses fog-up with moisture, the only solution is to turn on the moisture wringing ac unit, regardless of the temp of the air, the dehumidifier effect of the ac conditioned air is an absolute necessity. the current design of the grill/condenser leaves it vulnerable to be easily damaged by a bit of gravel as small as a bb pellet. there is not any screen or deflector in place forward of the condenser to prohibit any errant road missiles from damaging the condenser thereby creating the safety hazard of a fogged windshield and more. a simple screen or deflector could and should be installed to protect the safety of this car.  view

I have 80 spoke american wire wheels on my 94 harley with tube-less tires. this week-end while traveling in southern indiana i noticed my front end feel "light". as we pulled into a small town for lunch i noticed my tire was low, almost flat. i reviewed the tire and it looked fine so i checked the rim. it had about a 5-6 inch crack around the top of the rim and the liner was bulging through the rim! i couldn't believe there could be such a structural failure on a rim. needless to say we were very lucky and had to be trailed home.  view

Defect in the ignition to transmission interlock allowing key to be removed while in drive. this is a very dangerous condition if you are not careful. this has been this way at least for 15000 miles. i took it to the dealer and he said he could replace the switch but i would then have a key for the ignition and a key for the door locks. i told them if they could not key the switch that i would not accept two different keys. it now has 57000 miles on it.  view

On a very sunny day the power windows and door controls stop working. when i drive the car for 8 to 10 miles and stop the car and try opening the door and then try the power window it starts to work. it feels that as if the heat builds up in the car on a hot day and controls stop working but when i drive around the car cools off and controls seem to work. i did not notice this behavior in the cold weather.  view

I purchased a new 2002 chevy silverado ext cab 4wd in november 2001. the truck currently has 48000 miles on it. the rear brakes have been completely rebuilt 3 times due to excess wear and failure. the dealership has paid for the repairs twice and split the cost once but has advised they will not pay for it anymore. the cause appears to be sticking which wears the pads out which in turn wear out the rotors. the calipers freeze up and require replacing. the parking brake is used regularly and works okay. after the last repair, the abs chatters when coming to a stop on clear dry pavement, like a parking lot or stop sign.  view

The windshield on my 2003 honda element has developed a crack that starts on the bottom part of the passenger side and grew up 6-8 inches over the last few days. we took it to the dealer we bought it from (bill gatton honda in bristol, tn) and they said there was a chip in it and it was an impact damage and they would not consider it for warranty replacement. we told the dealer that nothing had hit the windshield and we were aware on numerous people who have had the same problem but they would not listen. i was referred to this site (nhtsa) by a fellow owner who had the same problem.  view

Problem: braking system problem. occurred only once so far. i had stopped at a store and when i left, the first time i applied the brake it felt the same as if i had just gone through a car wash (much greater pedal pressure needed to stop). i continued on to my workplace and had to apply the brakes several more times. each subsequent time the same condition happened. much greater pedal pressure was required to bring the car to a stop. it felt as though 50-75% of the braking power was gone. i immediately checked the fluid and it was right at the max line. strangely, when i left work several hours later the problem disappeared and has not happened since. obviously i'm concerned about it possible happening again. i'm guessing it must have been an electronic glitch of some sort??!  view
