Inside left front brake pad wore down completely at 17,109 miles, damaging rotor, requiring rotor replacement and brake job. there was absolutely no notice such as a squeal or other indication that would normally occur prior to a brake component failure. dealer claimed it was "normal" wear although the other three pads had plenty of life left on them. dealer would not cover repairs. gm customer service was contacted and provided no help. cust. service also sided with the dealer mechanic, saying it was "normal" wear and would not be covered. i ended up having them repaired/replaced at another location. seems to be a common problem as i have seen many prior complaints of this same type on the same or similar type vehicles. this appears to be a safety related complaint to me, but thus far, after many years of complaints of this type, no investigation has been initiated. inadequate braking systems for this type of vehicle. should be a recall to provide heavy duty brakes for these vans. dt  view

Fuel pump failed and was replaced on 9/5/02. picked up jeep and it broke down on the way home. was towed back to shop. replaced fuel pump 5 more times in the past 2 months and have been noticing a strong petrol smell. last time the mechanics told me to pick up the jeep it wouldn't even start and the petrol smell continued. now told by manager at the chrysler shop that an internal memo was issued in 1997 stating that 1996 cherokees had already started having problems with the fuel system, including faulty fuel pump systems and corroded fuel tanks. they said that they don't know what else to do other than replace the fuel tank at my cost. chrysler is holding true to character and insists that a jeep with so many miles (it's a '96 with only 58k miles) will have lots of problems. they do not seem to think it is strange that such a memo was issued detailing corrosion in the tanks of a high percentage of '96 jeeps only one year after manufacturing date. am worried about the smell of fuel in the car and safety in the event of a side impact accident. dt  view

Car can not come out of "p" (park) unless we stick a long stick in the "shift lock override" hole next to shifter, also brake lights not working, immediately pops the brake light fuse whenever brake pedal is depressed. dt  view

Three of four original ignition coils have failed. two of the replacements have failed. vw america has been contacted. they acknowledge that they are aware of the problem and that a new coil is available, but they refuse to replace the coils until they fail. when the coils fail, the car runs very "rough" does not engage into the turbo phase and the engine light comes on. dt  view

This is the fourth time this has happened. i was traveling down the highway, the plastic intake manifold & manifold gasket cracked leaking highpressured antifreeze into the cylinders creating a vapor lock, and the engine died. because of the vapor lock the engine would not start in nuetral, giving me no power steering and no power brakes!!!!! this just about caused a 20 -25 car pile up with 3-5 semi trucks. this is the 4th time and i am having to pay for these lemon law violations, let alone the safety of drivers worldwide!! gm should be forced to fix this major defective part and re-imburse all the people that have had this happen to them. there is a concerted effort on the internet with almost 1,100 signatures of this intake manifold problem. this safety hazard needs to be examined and all warranty company's and claims need to be reviewed to see how bad the safety hazard is. i hope this "official notification of the plastic manifold & manifold gasket defect" is taken as a serious threat to human lives throughout the world, and the nhtsa will intervene so there are no lives lost, because "you, nhtsa, have been notified " of the safety concerns!!!!!!!!!!!! this is "serious safety" we are talking about and concerns anyone who has bought a 3.1, 3.4 or 3.8 l engine from gm (which includes all buick, chevy, olds, pontiac, etc..) thank you, greg douglas dt  view
