1992 MERCURY CAPRI User Comment / Complaint

Ignition switch has been changed and new key given. problem still exists unable to shut ignition off until i monkey around with key for up to 3 minutes. light then goes on at top of transmission selector panel and then key is released for withdrawal from ignition. dt  view

Failure of a/c compressor, bearings seized causing belt to burn. second a/c unit to fail this way on this vehicle. first failed in june 2001at 81,500 mi. dealer says an oil leak from the evaporator led to loss of lubrication in the 17-month-old replacement compressor. recommends replacement of both parts. warranties past manufacturer unhelpful. dt  view

Fuel tank has a rubber vent ring on the top of the tank around the line which feeds fuel out of the tank. the vent dry rotted and deteriorated. the van was parked on our slanted driveway and gas began pouring out of the tank onto the driveway. the dealership and corporate headquarters have been contacted. they are firm with their position that the warranty has expired and the van was not repaired at one of their service centers, therefore they will not help with the costs of the repairs. ($737.00) the service manager at the dealership did admit this problem has never been seen before. he stated he has been asked to complete an engineering report for dodge corporate headquarters. should this car have been involved in an accident with this defective part, gas would have easily leaked from the tank causing an extreme safety hazard. dodge seems to be turning a blind eye to this problem and refusing to admit they sold me a car with a defective fuel tank. a response regarding this matter would be appreciated. dt  view

The emergency brakes on the car will not hold on even a slight grade. they have been adjusted multiple times, and recently i authorized re-lining the emergency brakes. i was told only one side was worn the other was like new, i have been told by the technicians that the design if faulty. only the automatic transmission park setting keeps my car from rolling down the hill. i'm not sure if this is a safety issue that would be addressed by nhtsb, but i wanted to log the complaint. dt  view

When accelerating from a stand still, the accelerator pedal sticks during the initial range of motion. this forces the driver to apply more pressure than normal in order to break thru the sticking point thus causing the van to surge forward. it is impossible to accelerate safely in a congested area such as the carpool line at our children's school. the dealer has attempted to fix it several times by cleaning carbon buildup. however the problem consistently returns. this is a serious problem that many owners have already complained about. even the dealer acknowledges it is a common problem with this vehicle. i hope that it doesn't take a child getting run over before someone does their job and forces honda to fix the problem. thank you for your help. dt  view

At 25 mph our vehicle t-boned another vehicle traveling approximately 50 mph. the other vehicle is completely totaled, and there is extensive damage to the front end of the truck. the whole front end of the truck is pushed back and shifted to the left side of the vehicle, and the frame of the truck is bent. despite the major damage, the air bags failed to deploy. contacted chrysler and repairs are on hold until investigated. chrysler refuses to provide any information on the status of the investigation. dt  view

The dual fuel tank selector valve may malfunction and cause an overfill condition in one of the fuel tanks, resulting in an overflow of fuel past the filler cap. dt  view

The original transmission failed and downshifted into 1st gear when i was traveling on the highway at 60 mph rpm's went well past the red line and speed reduced to 35mph. i nearly went through the windshield but i was buckled. then i had the transmission replaced and the same thing happened about 15-20,000 miles later. i am on my 3rd tranny now. dt  view

The dash board began to rip at the air bag component on the passager side of the car. the dealer will not cover it under warranty stating that it is cosmetic. dt  view
