97 escort was actually purchased for my daughter in 1998, with about 38000 miles on it. my son bought it from her in dec. 01 after he wrecked his ranger. he told me that his air bag indicator light on the dash had come on and wouldn't go off. i am in sales at a ford dealership and asked a couple of service advisors and mechanics about the light and they said that 99% of the time it was usually just a clock spring. figuring no big deal, i told my son to keep driving the car (this was about may,02). later he told me that he kept smelling something burning periodically; i could smell it but thought the odor was almost negligible. next thing i know, he told me the under side of the dash, behind the radio and on passenger side of the vehicle (inside the car) had caught fire and he used the kitchen fire extenguisher to put it out. i told him to also disconnect the battery. i have been selling fords for 11 years and did some digging. there was a technical service bulletin article no. 98-15-20 (supercedes article no. 98-14-3) which addresses this problem and tells the service dept. to replace the module and install a watershield to keep this from recurring. this is eligible under bumper to bumper warranty coverage and safety restraint warranty coverage. since my car has about 98000 miles on and was still running fine before this happened, am i out of luck at getting this car running again. preliminary estimate from a mechanic was about $1100 in parts and who knows how much in labor. would appreciate hearing your current case status with ford motor co. on this. thanks.  view

While cruising at 45 mph, the vehicle stalls and will not restart until after three to four attempts. dealer is unable to diagnose the problem (vehicle is a police package, the township also owns a second 2001 impala with the identical problems).  view

While in motion, the brakes went out completely. consumer had to utilize the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. brake fluid was leaking from the flexible stainless steel connector. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who explained that it made sense to replace both lines. one week later, the brakes failed again, same problem as previous.  view

Consumer states manufacturer designed the tether hardware for a child safety seat to tailor the front seat instead of the back. by law it is recommended children 12 and under are to be buckled in the back seat. that is the safest place. the child safety seat is not operable for back seat occupants.  view

My father owns this vehicle, but he bought it for me for safety reasons, i am a 16 year old female. traveling at normal highway speed on a dry, two lane highway with no traffic at night my 2002 ford focus lost control due to the front control arm fracturing. my right front tire ended up totally unattached to the control arm and only staying attached to the vehicle by the hold of the tie rod. my vehicle swerved into the median and into the oncoming traffic (thankfully no traffic was around). being by myself with no cell phone i waited until someone stopped on the side of the road. a police man, officer strom from the titusville police dep't stopped and noticed the skid marks and verified the front wheel had in fact come loose of the control arm and caused the accident. the tow truck operator, herb daniel's also verified the fracture in the control arm. i was not physically injured, but it was pretty emotionally traumatizing. my dad looked up information on the internet the following morning and found that accidents similar to mine had been reported before and no recalls had been made. we have video footage to show the skid marks and scene of the accident. at this point our main concern is to keep this type of accident from happening again and to make sure the new part that will be added to the car will not be defective.  view
