Bodyguard corrosion protection device was installed by cutter of maui at time of purchase. hyndai examined the car and said that the bodyguard device had caused the fire. cutter maintained that it didn't cause the fire, but a few weeks after the fire, i received a letter from cutter indicating that engine compartment fires had occurred on vehicles having the bodyguard device installed and that they would install a fuse to prevent the fires. when buyeri returned to cutter with the letter, they tried to take it back from buyer, claiming that bodyguard did not cause the fire.buyer.  view

Speed is a question because the car was struck from an oncoming car averaging somewhere between 35- 45 mph while i was just starting to put my foot on the gas pedal when we collieded. neither air bags deployed in my car. i would like to send digital images of the exterior and interior of the car. please let me know where i can e-mail or send by post office the photos. the estimated damage is about $8,000.-$10,000. in damages. the final report has not yet been filed. the car was not totaled, but should be on the fact that their is apparently a defect in the airbags. i have consulted with an automotive designer ( from ford, previously from gm) who has viewed the photos and has stated that an investigation should be done and that the car is not unrepairable, but the defective airbags should make the car totaled.  view

Vehicle has had consistent brake lead and pull to right and left, excessive brake pad wear and warpage of both rotors which causes a shimmy, wobbling and shaking of steering. this vehicle is driven mainly on open roads and highways, rarely in traffic . on many occasions when braking the vehicle will pull hard over to the left, sometimes right, especially on off ramps, often times needing a strong correction to keep vehicle from leaving the roadway. vehicle has been to dealer 5 times for testing and repair. however it was not the dealer where truck was purchased.  view

I have returned my vehicle three times for a repeat problem with the transmission. i continue to hear, after each repair is tried, grinding in the gears while shifting. the volume on the radio goes down while turning it up. both myself and my passengers have heard creaking in the steering column of my vehicle while turning at low speeds. these are all contiual problems that the dealership can't seem to repair or even notice.  view

While the escape is driving at no particular speed, the steering wheel tugs a little then it locks completely up, then the brakes fail, the engine light comes on and the only way to get the car to stop is to use the emergency brake. my escape has done this three times since i bought it in may of this year. two of the incidents almost resulted in car accidents because the car can not be steered. the car totally freezes up with all engines lights coming on. the speed doesn't seem to be a factor. all three occassions my cd player has been on, the air has been on low and my lights have been on. after the car finally stops by using the emergengy brake, i shut everything off and it starts right back up again.  view

This tire and rim is the original spare tire that came with the vehicle when new. spare tire was mounted on rear axle of vehicle for first time use. after a few miles of use, noticed a tire wobble condition. thought it was one of the front tires so replaced them with new. problem persisted. swapped out rear tires and rims with others and isolated the problem to be the nos spare that i had just put on 100 miles earlier. with the intention of bringing the tire/rim to a tire dealer for inspection, remounted this tire/rim in the spare tire carrier in passenger compartment. the next day, i went out to the vehicle and noticed that the tire had exploded. fortunately a window was left down. otherwise, all the vehicle glass would have been blown out from the explosion, possibly injuring a pedestrian nearby. if a person had been in the vehicle, especially if sitting right in front of the tire, they could have been injured severely or lost their eardrums. i still have the tire for inspection. Consumer states the rear window can not be cleared of rain, dew, fog or moisture that accumulates on the window when the vehicle is not in motion, even after the vehicle is in operation under city driving conditions, the rear window vision remains obscured, consumer has discussed the problem with the dealer and they suggested that a chemical be applied to the rear window that will facilitate removal of moisture from the window, but that solution is effective only after the vehicle is in motion, consumer requested that a wiper be installed for the rear window at his expense, but dealer refused to do so.  view

My vehicle has not had a catatrophic failure as of yet. however the front suspension components and wheel bearings have degraded rapidly to the point of being unsafe at highway speeds and has totally ruined the front tires at 20000 mi.(the alignment has been checked and is perfect) the local mitsubishi dealer "courtesy mitsubishi" has twice refused to honor my factory warrantee and has made ridiculous excuses such as "the tire tread is separating on the front tires, therefor we cannot diagnose any problems with the front end". afterwhich, i went to an authorized yokohama tire dealer and was assured that nothing was wrong with my front tires save for the excessive wear caused by suspension component problems! i feel as if i have no where else to turn as i cannot personally afford to hire a lawyer and sue for breech of contract. this is a dangerous situation and requires immediate action to remedy. with mitsubishi's past record of stonewalling against accepting responsibility for defective products, i am officially requesting assistance and a remedy from the nhtsa.  view

We had four aquatred iii tires placed on the vehicle on march 28th. my wife and i couldnt pick up the car on the 28th, so we drove to mueller tire & brake store on the morning of march 29th. the phone number of the westlake store is: 440-899-1888. the address is 25409 detroit road, westlake, oh, 44145. after picking up the car at 9:17:54 a.m. (on the invoice), i was driving to work. i drove about 5 miles on i-90 eastbound towards downtown cleveland. i was driving about 60 to 65 miles per hour. i had just turned on my radio when i noticed that the tire noise seemed to be increasing. i turned off the radio, and started moving towards the right hand land. the tire noise continued to increase. i was hoping it was a precautionary measure, but i decided to get ready to pull off on the west 117th exit (exit number 166). my hopes of precaution disappeared when i started smelling burning rubber. i then looked in my drivers side rearview mirror and noticed that my left rear tire was belching smoke. the rear of the car started to shake. i pulled off a little ways onto the exit ramp. i then got out to see if i could possibly drive the car to a service station, but the tire was completely destroyed. the tread was ok, but the inner and outer sidewalls were completely shredded. im not quite sure how i was able to get the car off the highway. I live in the florida keys where it is pretty warm but where the maximum speed limit is 55mph and mostly much less. there are few high speed (highway) miles on my tires. having said that, i drove to port orange (daytona beach), florida to see my father who recently had surgery and on the way home (only 8 miles into the return trip) i suddenly got a vibration in the ride. i was doing the speed limit of 70mph on the interstate i-95. i pulled over and checked my tires and didn't see anything and so assumed the problem was the road. i then drove a short distance and changed lanes but the vibration didn't go away so i kept to a lower speed (around 50) and took the next exit where i pulled into a parking lot and did a detailed examination of my tires. what i found was a raised area on the tread of the front left (driver's side) tire. it was approximately 12 inches long and 2 1/2 to 3 inches wide. it was difficult to detect visually because it was not raised very high but was easy to detect by running my hands around the tread of the entire wheel. i checked all other tires and didn't notice a problem so i located (with the telephonic assistance from my parents) a firestone dealer back in port orange where i had just come from and drove there. at first the guy in charge told me i would have a 2 hour wait since he had lots of paying customers in front of me but after explaining (rather forcefully) that this was an emergency problem due to a defective product and that i had an 8 hour drive ahead of me that his product had already delayed by at least 1 1/2 hours he finally told me he would get me in the bay in an hour. at first, he was only going to replace the one tire. i insisted they inspect all the tires and it was a good thing i did... they found the tread on the right front was also separating and that it was also dangerous and would need to be replaced which they did. i want the remaining two replaced. With less than 2,000 miles wear the first tire tread separated slowing from interstate highway speed to a stop, minor damage occurred to r.v. a second tire experienced the same tread separation after highway travel and was noted on a routine safety check by driver. mileage on this tire was less than 3,000. a third tire separated on the reporting date. this was noticed by out of round appearance when seen in the side view mirror. all four tires were purchased new, at the same time. the first two tires were replaced, at no cost, by cooper tire dealers. the remaining two were replaced at personal expense. at no time were tires subjected to greater than rated loads. separation was in the main body of the tire. Consumer was going about 30 mph and noticed gas gauge had dropped. consumer started smelling gas inside of vehicle. consumer pulled over, got out, and didn't see anything. then, got back in. when consumer and children got back into vehicle, flames and smoke were coming out from under hood. they got out, ran across the street, and fire department put out the flames. vehicle was totaled. insurance company ruled that the it was a ruptured fuel line that sprayed fluid onto manifold, and that made it ignite. consumer will contact manufacturer to file a complaint.  view

At approximately 1815 23 august 2001, her grandson entered the left passenger seat, climbed into the front seat over the console slipped against the shifting lever (on the steering column) with his right elbow. the car started moving. he tried to stop the car by pushing on the "middle" pedal. he stated he couldn't stop the car and that it hit a tree on the right fender, bounced over and into the ditch, and kept going into another ditch. the second ditch (the adjacent yards of the three properties involved were downhill slopes.), the left wheels hit a slight embankment, turning the car to the left, slowing the vehicle some. a neighbor moving his lawn was persuing the car, and stated he instructed the boy to unlock the doors, while still in motion and when the boy complied, opened the door and applied the brakes. the car hit a cedar post and bird feeder before being stopped.there were no keys in the car. the nieghbor stated he tried to turn the steering wheel to lock the wheels but it didn't lock. the boy later complained of a headache and was taken to the emergency room and treated for a mild closed head injury. the police were notified, and were advised to notify/dealer/manufacturer. no police report was made out as it all was on private property. we tested the shifting column, and without depressing the brakes, or putting the key in the ignition, i could very easily move the shift level to all gears. after reporting the incident to svc manager mont.chev. eddie mills 1130 24 august 01, he advised me to call 1-800-222-1020.  view

On a rainy day, rear brake lining grabbed actuating the abs system. as i have found, this problem is discussed in ford tsb 9805a24a. the brake pedal fell as additional pressure was needed to stop. described as "normal" in special service message 03731. (a nice way to describe a problem that you do not want to fix.) the abs brakes stopped pumping. the system then appeared as though no brakes were applied. the truck was not slowing down. either the back brakes and possibly the front were not functioning at all, or all 4 wheel were locked up and the truck was sliding. (tires were all in good condition.) i was forced to put the truck into a ditch in order to avoid the vehicle in front of me. later testing on a wet surface revealed that i would have been better off to pump the brakes, something that manufacturers of abs systems advise you not to do. as i understand from reading information by others who have had the same problem, the vacuum supply on the system is not sufficient to handle repeated operation by the abs system. i still am not sure what the condition of the wheels were at the point when i had to leave the road, whether the front were rolling, or locked and whether the back were rolling or locked.  view

The head gasket was replaced by the dealer on 3-16-01, due to a crack and leaking coolant. the car had never overheated or shown obvious signs of this, although the engine check light came on after long trips and the dealer said this was o2 sensors. 3 weeks after the headgasket replacement, the whole engine blew while on i-81 at 65mph. we lost all power and had to coast to a narrow shoulder. this sounds exactly like the 1995 windstar head gasket problem, but they have not acknowledged the 96 as a manufacturing defect and did not recall the 95 either.  view

My concern is that ford may have defaulted fuel tanks for this car model. i did not run over anything, or do anything to cause my fuel tank to leak gas. the leak is right on the seam in the middle of the tank, where the manufacturer had put it together. i fill up my tank one day and notice gas pouring out from underneath. i have no idea how long it was leaking before i noticed it, therefore i was driving around a timebomb just waiting to blow up. by the simple act of someone flicking a cigarette out of their window, or if someone ran into me. my car could blow up at any time. that is why i am writing this complaint to prevent such death from happening. thank you very much for your time.  view

On a rainy day, rear brake lining grabbed actuating the abs system. as i have found, this problem is discussed in ford tsb 9805a24a. the brake pedal fell as additional pressure was needed to stop. described as "normal" in special service message 03731. (a nice way to describe a problem that you do not want to fix.) the abs brakes stopped pumping. the system then appeared as though no brakes were applied. the truck was not slowing down. either the back brakes and possibly the front were not functioning at all, or all 4 wheel were locked up and the truck was sliding. (tires were all in good condition.) i was forced to put the truck into a ditch in order to avoid the vehicle in front of me. later testing on a wet surface revealed that i would have been better off to pump the brakes, something that manufacturers of abs systems advise you not to do. as i understand from reading information by others who have had the same problem, the vacuum supply on the system is not sufficient to handle repeated operation by the abs system. i still am not sure what the condition of the wheels were at the point when i had to leave the road, whether the front were rolling, or locked and whether the back were rolling or locked.  view

Complete tread separation on right front tire. luckily, no one was injured. there was no trailor or real load in the back of the truck. it could have been much worse if it happened 20 minutes later on a twisty mountain road or hauling a load. tire pressure has been religiously checked at 72 psi for all tires and 48 hourd before this trip. these tires have never been off road 4-wheeling or heavy trailor towing. just finished a 1,000 mile trip to hamilton, mt and back to orem,ut over july 4th. there was no noticable wear, bubbles, or blemishes on exterior of any tires before this trip. only noticable damage is to the tire, scratches on wheel rim, and slight scuffing on fenders. the worst part of this is the attitude of both ford and firestone in blaming one another and no one will take responsibility for these defective tires. we will just have to wait for a serious injury accident and the lawyers to get it resolved! Driving at 70 miles an hour on i-95, the tire tread peeled off and exploded on the front left tire, damaging the car, and causing loss of control and winding up on the side of the road in a shallow ditch. firestone refused any responsibility. after replacing the front tires, leaving the original rear tires, 2 months later, leaving an on ramp to i-4 at approximately 37 miles an hour, the rear right tire tread peeled off too. no damage was done this time, but all firestone tires were removed and replaced with goodyears. firestone has refused any responsibility. state farm has a claim against firestone. firestone has not made any compensation to this date. i believe that two firestone tires damaged within 2 months of each other on the same car is more than coincidence. On 6/30/01 the tire tread on the left (driver side) rear tire of our 1997 ford explorer sport separated from the main body of the tire. this resulted in a complete loss of vehicle control. both the driver and passenger were injured while the vehicle violently shook and changed direction multiple times. both people were in the front seats and were wearing their seat belts. one person hit her head on the side window and is now experiencing numbness in one of her hands and other areas. both people suffered whiplash and sprain type of injuries. there was no impact with other vehicles or objects due only to the location of the road and the time at which the tread seperated and the vehicle lost control. if the tread had come off the tire 5 sec. earlier much more serious injury and probably death would have resulted as the vehicle was crossing a bridge with a low guard rail. if the tire failure had occurred on a raod with any heavier traffic present a collision would have been unavoidable as the vehicle jumped from lane to lane. it should be noted that when the tread seperated from the tire it came off in essentially 1 piece and in 1 rotation of the tire. the loss of vehicle control was nearly instantaneos. the damage to the car was a result of the tread severing cables, bending the body and underside of the car as well as shattering the tail light. the vehicle was being driven from las vegas, nv to visit realitives near tehachapi, ca. the tire failure happened as the vehicle was traveling on hwy. 58 approximately 7 miles outside of tehachapi, ca. the tire pressure was checked on the vehicle before it left las vegas. upon stopping, it was noticed that the tread was begining to seperate from the left front tire as well. if it had been the front rather than the rear tire that failed first, or if both had failed at the same time, a rollover and very serious injury or fatality would have almost certainly happened. Had a vibration in vehicle. i thought it was a wheel out of balance. had tires balanced the day of engine failure. still had vibration. engine ran rough then quit. checked engine compartment, realized had no coolant. engine had siezed. would not crank. mechanic removed spark plugs and coolant drained from all combustion chambers. i did design work on this product at gm and asked an aquanitance about engine problems. he said that gm had the egr gas temperature too high and this was causing the "plastic " intakes to fail. intake will warp and coolant leaks into air passages causing engine to run rough and/or stop depending on amount of leakage. this also contaminates the exhaust system (catalytic converter). also extensive engine damage depending on failure. ( amount of water). this defect involves all gm vehicles made with this engine. pontiac, buick,chevy. any product made with "plastic" intakes until gm corrected the problem ( egr temperature into intake). i am sure there are and will be a lot of failures of this type as the vehicles age. i think this is a recall type situation due to the amonut of vehicles involved. this also may mean i won't be able to find a job in this industry by reporting this!!! i have an automotve related job doing business with gm as one of the customers.  view

I prucahsed my new truck on or about sept 1998. since then i have not had but prblems with the firestone tires. they rode like you were driving down a rocky road i tried rotaing them and keep a close eye on the air pressure of the tires. the two front tires were real bad and i ended up just buying two more from the local firestone dealer in greenville, ky. i am a ky state police trooper and now when there is something wrong with a tire they felt as if they were out of round but could not convince the firestone dealer so i just bout two more. i moved the two rear tires up front and put the two new ones on the back. even with the before the new tires i noticed that the tires did not maintain a constant air presuure in them and recently during the hot weather we have been having here i have to add additional air to the tires. i have contacted firestone and ford about this but no one is saying anything. in the comming week i am going to buy me 4 new tires and just get them off i dont trust them if you would like them i would be happy to give them to you for futher tests.  view

The hydraulic hose on the clutch failed at the time the clutch was depressed to start the engine. the vehicle lurched forward as the engine started even though there is a clutch-starter interlock because the clutch had not disengaged. the clutch pedal was fully depressed but the clutch was still engaged, leading to this unsafe condition. after turning off the engine and putting the gear shift in neutral, the car was restarted but the clutch pedal remained at the depressed position and never came up. upon removing the car from the garage, there was a pool of hydraulic fluid on the floor. mercedes had to tow the car in and replace the hydraulic hose. this hose did not display any signs of abrasion or damage and had failed internally on a vehicle with only 300 miles on the odometer. luckily, the failure happened with the car sitting in the garage but there is an unsafe condition that does allow the car to lurch forward when starting. this was a manufacturing defect and there could be other vehicles outfitted with the same hydraulic hose from the same mercedes supplier. if the clutch had failed while driving at highway speeds, it would have been very unsafe to maneuver the vehicle without any control or power.  view

Auto has cruise control. the owner's manual indicates that there is a cruise control indicator light on the dashboard. when the cruise control is on/engaged, no indicator light shows on the dash. morong vw (the falmouth, maine service center we use) and the vw customer service hotline indicate that despite the owner's manual statement that cars with cruise control have a cruise control indicator light, none is installed in 2001 vw passats. they both indicated that no repairs would be made to this problem, despite my request. in my view, it is potentially dangerous for there not to be an indicator showing the cruise control to be engaged. i've never owned a car or been in a car with cruise control that did not have such a light. without the light, there is higher risk of inadvertent engagement, or failure to remember that the system is engaged, both potentially dangerous situations. is there any regulation that requires such a light? thanks for your time.  view

Mechanic at dealership said that they had received letters that this was occuring on these vehicles due to small hole for oil to chain clogging but i had no recalls or warnings of this. this car has relatively few miles on it and at the time this happened, i had just stopped to turn into a parking lot. there could have been a serious accident if it had happened during the turn or if i had been driving down the road as the car lost power immediately. if the dealerships are receiving letters, why aren't the owners. i realize that there can be failure of this part, but if the failure is due to the clogging of the area that keeps the chain oiled, then this is a defect in the car not the wear of the part.  view
