The daimlerchrysler district manager for maryland and d.c. first told me that the "crown" of the roadway was the cause of my problems with this 2000 jeep grand lemon - when pressed to present a more creditable explanation for the extreme steering pull to the right side of the roadway, his answer was: "mr. jackson, i'm telling you as the washington zone manager for daimler chrysler that i cannot find any problems with this jeep and as the zone manager for maryland i say you do not have a problem, therefore daimlerchrysler does not consider this jeep to be defective. as the daimler chrysler zone manager i am telling you that in my opinion there are no problems with this vehicle". --- what a load of bullshit !!!!!!!! --- (a complimentary load of bullshit seems to be standard equipment on all jeep grand cherokees and this is one feature i could do without) --- the daimerchrysler people have proven to me that they are arrogant, flat out liars. they just laughed at me when i said i would be reporting these problems to nhtsa. they just don't care. -- in two or three years, when daimler-benz finally dumps the chrysler division into that deep cesspool of defective products and obscene customer service, i will be happy to attend the corporate liquidation sale in auburn hills - driving my new honda.

In the summer of 1998 (july-august) i had three tire failures. the first tire located on the right rear failed traveling 65 miles per hour on i-75. the tread separated leaving the core inflated. i lost traction on the wheel and the vehicle became hard to control as it when off the road. i was able to stop the bronco and change the tire and continue driving. the second failure occurred when my wife was driving on the left rear a week later on i-4 at 65 miles per hour, the tire separated and deflated and caused about $500.00 damage to the left rear quarter panel. the next week on i-75 the vehicle became unstable and hard to control i stopped the bronco and found the right left rear tire was starting to separate and changed to tire out. i asked my firestone dealer at that time what they thought the problem was with the tires and was told that it was probably the age of the tires. i replaced all the tires on the bronco and kept one of the old atx tires as a spare on 08/13/1998.( dot number: vd60at4493 tire size: 31x1050r15 )

I filled this form out previously concerning these tires. the problem is that the tread is seperating from the sidewall on both rear tires. i had all four tires replaced at my own expense for safety reasons. the two rear tires, in addition to the tread seperation problems, have large "blisters" or "bubbles" in the interior of the tire. one measures approximately three inches across, and one-half inch high. the other measures approximately two inches across, and one-half inch high. these 16-inch wilderness at tires are defective, and others, and need to be recalled( dot number: w2cu1px217 tire size: p25570r16 )

As we were returning from vacation on 3/20/00 from florida, my wife (the driver at the time) felt weird vibrations through the steering wheel. (note -we were approx. 5 miles in to georgia on i-75 just passed the ga/fl border - near lake park?). as we continued to slow down and move away from other traffic, we heard a popping noise from under the explorer as if things were kicking up from the road and hitting the undercarriage. once we were able to pull off the interstate, i looked under the suv and did a quick visual inspection of the tires, however, all appeared to be normal (no flats, nothing that we could visibly see). we pulled back onto the interstate and before we even reached merging speed (55 - 60 mph), the popping noise returned and we could actually see small black parts exiting the rear of the vehicle. we managed to immediately pull off the road and enter a gas station at which time we discovered a foot long patch of the left rear tire was completly gone. although the tire never deflated, a complete foot long section of tread, through the steel belts and all, was gone. no other damage to the tire was visible (side walls all okay, no punctures, nails, etc.). i inspected the rest of the tires and we continued our trip home once the spare tire was installed. on 4/1/00, i went to the local firestone center (940 old monrovia rd, huntsville, al 35806) and had them inspect the damaged tire. although they did not confirm or deny that the tire was defective, they did offer me a new tire at a pro-rated discount. at that time, i had them inspect all of the tires, perform wheel balances, rotations, etc. based on the tread wear at that time, full replacement of all tires was not needed. since that time, we have heard from other people of similar problems and with the latest news on the investigation of the firestone tires, i felt it was necessary to report our experience. we were fortunate not to have had an accident and are awaiting more recall info.

After operating the vehicle for a while, transmission will not engage into drive and sometimes will not engage into reverse. overdrive light then started to flash. when the transmission does engage, the vehicle tends to lurch forward in an unsafe manner. brought the vehicle to an independent garage. they changed the ecm (electronic control module) at a cost of $650.00 parts and labor. we left for a week vacation the next day only to have the same problem occur. garage insisted that the ecm was defective and that the transmission problem is a separate issue. brought the vehicle to dealer (shamrock ford). within a couple of hours, we recieved a call that the transmission has to be replaced. cost: $2600.00. upon searching the internet, we found that a lot of 1995 windstar experienced the same problem. we believe that this is not only an issue of manufacturer defect but also a safety issue, something the nhtsa should be involved in. ford motor company has not been receptive to our complains and requests for financial assistance in the repair although, we believe, that they are fully aware of the defect in the transmission as evidenced by their prompt diagnosis of the problem . we own a 1995 toyota celica with 245,000 miles and a 1988 toyota camry with 264,000 miles. we feel that we are responsible car owners and that our vehicles are not subjected to abuse and misuse. we bought the ford windstar with the belief that finally, american car manufacturers has achieved a level of reliability equivalent to their foreign car competitors. it now appears that at least one company, ford motors, has not.

There are brown spots, in an otherwise navy blue colored dash, that appear to be burned areas. also, the part of the dash connected closest to the wind shield has become completely unglued. upon contacting the manufacturer, we were told that they would pay for the dash itself but we would have to pay for the labor. since our warrantee had expired, we thought that was pretty fair until we were informed we could only have it repaired at the dealership (who charges $80/hour). our regular auto body specialist would charge us half of that amount, and that would include actually paying for the dash. the manufacturer agreed to let us take the free dash outside the dealership for repair. then when we asked for that agreement in writing, they claimed they had never agreed to allow that. we asked them to review their "quality assurance" tapes. we were then told that even if the tapes proved the conversation occured as we said, we still could not take the dash anywhere other than the dealership. we did not even buy the car from the dealership. by offering to give us a replacement dash free of charge, they were admitting that it was a defect. of all the people that we showed the dash to, not one person had ever seen anything like it in their lives. we feel that we were deceived by the manufacturer.

Traveling interstate highway between florida and virginia my 1992 ford explorer started shaking violently. it felt like i was losing a wheel. i stopped and checked the wheels out and everything looked ok. we proceeded cautiously to our destination of abingdon, virginia. i ultimately took the vehicle to the firestone dealer in bristol, tn. and was told the steel belts had seperated and needed to replace the tires. there was 10/32 of tread still remaining on the tires when i had to replace them and had to pay 195.00. the tires had always been carefully maintained with proper inflation and rotated every 5000 miles. the tires were replaced with firestone atx tires and on 06/29/99 @ 34383 miles they were again replaced because of failure and this time wilderness at tires were used.( dot number: w2hl tire size: p235/75/15 )

I am a very unsatisfied customer since the first day we bought our rv because we began having problems. on 5/2000 we attended to united rv at ft. worth, texas, where we bought it on 9/98 and had it fixed. we lost a lot of money in our expenses (which we should haven't paid) and, besides that, we attended a nearby fleetwood factory at longview, texas, to have it fixed again because it wasn't fixed right the first time. now, almost two months from our return, we began to experience lots of headaches since the main leaf spring at the right side of the rv broke risking my wive's and my lives due we were towing the rv at 50 miles per hour on our way back to our home place at mexico city where we live. thanks to a mexican highway patrol we didn't experience any accident. there are too many things failed, like a non-working fridge, no electricity from the electric contacts except for the microwave oven and the a/c, the lpg leak detection alarm has turned my wife and i crazy since we can't stop it and shut it off while the lpg is shut off, the bathroom door knob failed and my wife stood almost 2 hours inside the toilet without making her way out (what would have happened in an event of fire?), we had raindrops on the interior and it was all wet everytime it rained, etc. etc,, and i can still write a lot of more deffects. this rv we bought was brand new but it seemed to be more than 20 years old. we live in mexico city and we haveour rv located at a trailer park on the city of cuernavaca, 50 miles away from mexico city. i will appreciate any kind response you can provide.

The mounts between the body and subframe believed to be called the body insulators which hold the engine and transmission in place failed due to errosion. the mounting bolts pulled through the retainig washer and the rubber mount allowing the engine and transmission to fall onto the ground. both rear mounts failed and in the process disconnected the steering linkage at the slip joint under the dash which allows for the tilt steering. this steering joint completly separated because of the distance allowed to travel from the assembly falling. all steering was loss and there was no control of the vehical available. this is a serious safety risk!!!! people will be hurt if not killed because of this problem especially if incountered at high speeds or traffic. lincoln has been notified of the problem and i have found previous recalls for this problem but only in high errosion states, mi, ct il ect..... i believe this problem is larger than once thought due to the way the car was manufactured. the washers used are susceptible to rust because of the contours and gauge of the metal used. it has nothing to due to the area that a car has been driven. the fact there are no safety catches under the car is simply wrong. under the previous recalls it is stated that the steering may become hard to control when the mounts fail. the steering is not hard to control but is impossible, it is no longer connected. the direction you are traveling at the time of failure is the direction you continue to follow until stopped or redirected by the forces of nature. the problem is apparent in the mercury sable, ford taurus as well as the lincoln continential. please reexamine this problem before people die, i cant begin to explain how lucky i and family were. thankyou, rc

My vehicle is subject to nhtsa campaign 98v150001 and/or 98v150000. chevrolet is maintaining that my vehicle has already been fixed, although that is not the case. while this may be a rare snafu, it may be part of a pattern of conduct. interestingly, chevrolet has said that if i can produce the records that demonstrate that the work has already been done, they will do the work again. (since the work has never been done, i obviously cannot meet this requirement.) from chevrolet's perspective, i can have the work done twice if i have a record of it having been done once, but i cannot have it done at all if they have a record that it was done previously, but i have no such record. do they think they can win with this logic? does nhtsa monitor the implementation of these recalls? do you know that this is gm's policy?

When the first tire failed we were on i-70. a vibration occurred and then the tire lost about half of its tread. we changed the tire and returned home safely. the second tire began vibrating on i-90 just before buffalo wy. being only about one mile from the campground we slowly made it in and changed the tire there. the next moring we drove to sheridan, wy to a firestone dealer where they replaced the tire free of charge plus balancing. later i discovered the firestone dealer replaced my load range e tire with a load range d tire. the third tire blew without warning on i-70 throwing the tread into my tow vehicle and then jamming it into the tow dolly. change the tire and now i without a spare. the forth tire began vibrating, i pulled over and inspected the tires and found another separated tire. not having a spare we slowly traveled to goodland, ks to try and find a tire. being a holiday we had to wait until the next morning to purchase two more tires. with the two new tires now on the left rear we made it home safely that night. we are very fortunate after four tire failures and no accidents. i've been driving for twenty-eight years and have never experienced anything like this before. each time before leaving camp i always checked the tire pressure and made sure it was at the recommended pressure. i drove on certified scales before and after the trip, before unloading to be sure the vehicle was'nt overlaoded. this leads me to believe there is a serious problem with these tires and should be added to the recall list immediately before more tire failures occur and possibly fatalities. your prompt attention is appreciated. About a month after purchasing the car, i had a flat on the front passenger side tire. we took the car to discount tires who told us that the tire on the back drivers side was separating and had to be replaced. they refused to fix the flat until we replaced the tire due to safety. we bought a replacement tire from discount tires and had it placed on the front drivers side. about two weeks later my son was driving the car on one of our loops, at the posted speedlimit of 70 mph, when the rear passenger side tire shredded and blew out. the car ended up going sideways down the loop in rush hour traffic. he ended up in the middle of freeway in the grass. thankfully no one was hurt, but the tire did damage to the wheel well and the rear bumper when it came loose. we replaced that tire and the other front tire at the same time. about two to three weeks later i noticed a bad vibration while driving and had the fourth tire replaced. i had asked the technician at discount tires, if i should go to firestone and have them look at the tire, as there must be something wrong with them to come apart like that. i was told i could take it to them, however they would not give me very much, as the tread was low, i might get a little bit of replacement value but not much. since i have had to replace all four tires, and the tire retailers charged me a disposal fee, and kept the bad tires, i have no way of proving that i had the original firestone tires the car came with. these tires looked fine and appeared to have quite a bit of tread still on them, but all four of them completly separated the tread from tire.it mounted. I just heard on the radio of a potential problem. about six weeks ago i had a blowout on the freeway which resulted in a damaged rim and a replacement of a tire. at the time i asked repairman if it could be a defect and he wasn't sure. i asked how long the tires should last, he said 60k miles. i only have 40k miles, with still an okay tread. at the time i figured it was just an anomaly. This is the 6th tire that the tread has peeled off. the first few times it was the manufacturer's originals. i am reporting this one because it caused severe damage to the vehicle. this is an obvious defect in the tire.this last incident -- the tire only had 1100 miles on it. caused us to skid and almost hit another vehicle. In the month of january i was on a return trip from orlando, florida and on my way to tallahassee, florida home. approximately 60 miles north of orlando i began to experience a vibration in the vehicle that i was driving ( 1996 ford explorer ). i was traveling at 60 mph and as i continued to decrease in speed the vibration increased and before i was able to bring the vehicle to a stop i felt a large bang in the left rear of the vehicle as if the tire blew, the vehicle began to swerve back and forth to the left and to the right, i was able to get the vehicle under control nearly missing another vehicle. i replaced the tire with the spare that was on the vehicle and made it to tallahassee. during the duration of the drive to tallahassee i observed the performance of the remaining tire on the vehicle. my conclusion when i arrived in tallahassee was that i did not feel that the tires on the vehicle were safe and would not bet my families life them so i had them replaced. within the next week i had four of the five tires replaced on the vehicle, the spare still remains under the vehicle until such time this matter is resolved. to my surprise on august 8, 2000 i heard rumors that the tire of the same brand and make "firestone radial atx" series may be recalled. however there was substantial damage to the vehicle from the steel belted radial that tore away from the wheel itself causing damage to the vehicle and almost my life from the tire in question. i feel that it would not be unreasonable to be reimbursed for the tires that i replaced and the damage to my vehicle. i would appreciate a reply to the matter at hand. Tire blew when turning to parallel park - replaced with same. since about 10,000 miles, the other 3 oe tires on vehicle have shown "peeling" rubber on the sidewalls to where the white inner belts are showing through in small areas. i had thought this was normal wear and tear in the south (i recently moved here from michigan) until i started hearing and reading in the last few days about the inherent problems with these particular tires. i am now extremely concerned about the potential danger of driving my explorer with these tires. i would like to know what can be done to remedy the situation. thanks. Tread separated from steel belts, and pounded on body of truck, causing $1400 in body damage, then ripped away, leaving only a bare steel belt, which still held air pressure. reported to firestone dealer, who told me that they had no responsibility for 1995 tires because tires should be thrown out and replaced after 4 years, due to uv damage from the sun; he also told me that i had too much air in the tire. i replaced that and another firestone tire (also vintage 1995) at sears at my own expense ($144 more). Date of tire failure is the most recent failure. three previous tire failures have occurred at about six to nine month intervals. while each of these tires had been used considerably, the tire failure in each case has been identical. the failure in each case has been a severe and dramatic blowout. the loss of tire pressure in each case has been instanteous and complete. the blowout in each incident has been transverse involving all of the tread surface and both sidewalls leaving only the tire beads intact. Since these tires were officially recalled yesterday (8/9/00), we have contacted the dealer where we purchased the vehicle. they stated that it will probably take up to six months before we are contacted and can begin to rectify the problem. i feel this is unacceptable. my wife and children use this vehicle primarily and i am concerned about the dangers. is the information from the dealer correct? i have been trying to get through to the firestone hotline 800#, but cannot get through for any further information. any info you could give me would be appreciated. Tire failed as tread separated from tire body. although tire was replaced via pro-rata value of tire tread used, we replaced the firestone tires with michelin tires on march 24, 1999. we did this because of lack of trust in the firestone tires, and even though the firestone tires would have been good for another 20000 miles or so based on tread left.. The sidewall failed on this tire. to date two other tires are showing similar damage. i am a pretty good driver and do not rub my tires on curbs, etc. it is almost like the sidewall is peeling away exposing a white layer beneath. naturally the recent news prompted this response, but my concerns are very real. thank you and keep up the great work - i sleep better at night knowing you are protecting my family's interests. The first incident with an occurence date of 10/9/99 was when i located a lump in the left side front tire. while driving at slow speeds the steering wheel would move side to side as the lump or raised portion of the wheel would come into contact with the road. at higher speeds it felt like the tire was out of balance. i finally located the lump and had the tire replaced. i was informed at the time the belts had seperated. the tire was replaced but only after the price had been prorated according to the manufacturers warranty. the second incident was much more serious. while returning home from the northern part of the state the tread completely seperated on the right front tire. i was travelling on a highway known as the cimmaron turnpike. the speed limit on the turnpike is 75 mph. i noticed a vibration and then the whole tire let go. the tread stripprd off and tore up the whole inside of the fender as it continued to go around. it tore out the inner fender well liner . it looked exactly like the tires being shown on the news reports concerning firestone. after these two incidents these tires were replaced under the manufacturers warranty but only after they had been prorated. i replaced the two rear tires in april of 2000 prior to taking a trip because i thougt they might do the same thing.( dot number: tire size: 235/70sr16 )

I was driving on a major interstate freeway and the right rear tire exploded and quickly disinegrated. i somehow managed to get the truck to the side of the road and get the spare on. after getting to the nearest firestone dealer in springfield mo, they said the failure was due to the rubber valve stem breaking loose. they said ford should have equiped the truck with steel valve stems. ford and firestone have declined responsibility for the failure. luckily i was able to keep from crashing and being killed. Firestone tire tread separation occurred on i-75 near bradenton, fl, in last october. without warning, the tread separated at highway speed and wrapped around rear axle. i briefly lost control and narrowly avoided flipping the vehicle. the tire never deflated. my 8-year old son was with me at the time. this occurred on a weekend, and the following monday i brought the tire into the firestone dealership in palm bay, florida. the manager described the failure as "de-vulcanization" of the tread, and mention that it should never have happened. i filed a claim through thhe firestone's insurance for the damaged that occurred to my emergency brake and quarter-panel. firestone processed the claim and paid for the damages which i had repaired totally $800. they made me mail them the failed tire, but i did take photos and copied the claim paperwork. the set of atx tires, which were my second set, had about 40,000 miles on them at the time, and were in great shape. firestone compensated me for the failed tire, but because i was now uncomfortable with the other three, and replaced them, all with bridgestones, at my own cost.( dot number: )
