1981 PLYMOUTH RELIANT User Comment / Complaint

Vehcile has steering failure, when turning the wheel over corrects, brake failure locks up and pulls very hard to the left.  view

I purchased the vehicle from bobb chevy in 11/99, in april 2000 noticed a grinding noise when braking. took car into a tuffy auto shop who indicated i needed complete brake job. they suggested warranty should cover vehicle repairs. so i took it to bobb at 7:30 am on 4/27/00, they completed brake job - rotors, calipers, fluid, pads and labor. this totalled $817.01, i paid $496.12, warranty paid the balance. on 5/17/00, coming home from work on a service road i tried to apply my brakes and found i did not have any - this was 3 wks after a total replacement. i had the option to go into an intersection, or hit a car stopped at the stop sign, but i chose to run off the road, hoping that would have stopped me. i hit a pine tree, both air bags popped out, windshield cracked, subsequently my insurance company - geico totalled the car. i suffered severe bruises, ended up in emergency, ordered to take 2 days off work for bruises, severely sprained ankle, bruises on chest & stomach from seatbelt and airbag. i have contacted the dealership, given them geico's report and police report. they suggested i contact product liability dept of chevrolet. at this time someone from gm product asst is to contact me.  view

Windshield wipers failed while driving in rain, without a serious problem. i had brosz repair look at them and the printed circuit module was bad, so a new replacement was bought and installed. while visiting your website, i see there was a recall on this year and model pickups. i contacted my dealer who says my pickup was not recalled. i think that, as the faulty part s now known to be faulty, chevrolet should re-imburse me for the part($53.43), and the small labor bill($10).  view

The failure of the windshield wipers is covered under a recall for 1995-1997 models but not the 1994 model. the failure on my vehicle has been confirmed by a dealer to be the same defect covered by the recall on the later model. i would like information on how or what i can do to initiate an investigation into whether or not the same part was used in the '94 models as was used in the '95-'97 models.  view

Recall 98v323000/subframe: recall repairs was made in jan 1999; now the problem have reoccurred. dealer notified, and informed consumer that repairs was already done, and nothing else would be done. feel free to provide any further details.  view

Cylinder head gasket failed, engine overheated, driver and family stranded. ford has extended warranty for same problem in 1994-95 models with same 3.8l engine; will not honor warranty for 1993, even though my vehicle's mileage and age would otherwise meet criteria of the warranty extension. initial telephone call to ford was fruitless.  view

The brake warning light comes on when brake handle down. owner's manual doesn't say so, but the light is also operated by low brake fluid level. not knowing this is a real safety hazard to the driver.  view

Engine head gasket had failed, causing engine to lose power on the freeway. also,there was a complete loss of coolant. vehicle overheated & battery had failed. timing belt tensioner & timing belt had excessive wear & needed replacing.  view

My car was stopped,second in line, at the end of the exit ramp of i-91 in northampton ,ma (very slight downhill grade). the first car began to pull out. i removed foot from brake, did not place foot on gas and eased out clutch to cause car to creep forward. i looked left, saw traffic coming fast and reflexively hit brake hard. both airbags deployed, smashing windshield. i was not hit because the seat was fully back (i'm 6'1") and because there was no impact to throw me forward. first car was 3' in front of mine. driver confirmed i did not hit her. massachusetts state police trooper, robert plant, responded. he asked first car driver if she had been hit (response "no"), then left scene without filing accident report (there was no accident, only a breakdown). i reported incident to subaru. they inspected car, claim scratches on bumper (pre-existing) indicate impact occured and that airbags responded correctly. there was definitely no impact, not even contact!!!  view

Tires: had a blowout on the highway in april of this year. i went to the nearest firestone dealer. he inspected the tire and reported that it was defective and not repairable, so i bought a new one. ever since this happened, the vehicle vibrated terribly at highway speeds. reported (3times) to dealership since april. each report is documented. allegedly fixed each time. finally on 8/04/00 the tire was declared defective by the dealership and was replaced.(i have documentation/receipts on all work). problem is that the truck still vibrates at highway speeds although at lower mph than previously reported. air conditioning: first reported strong moldy odor back in jan 1999. was told by ford service rep. that it was due to the truck's having been idle in the hot sun/parking lot prior to my purchasing it. i was told that it would dissipate in time. it did not. i brought it in three times since then. each time i asked that the cause be fixed and not just the symptoms. on the 4th visit, i involved the owner and his dealership hired an outside company to remove the mold from the system. they claimed to have done so but during the cleaning process they added a chemical/perfume that is so strong, one cannot tell if the actual problem is still present or not. i was told (by the service rep) the owner was so offended by this smell that he had the company come back out & redo the truck to remove the added chemical. they were unsuccessful as it smells very strong even today (2 weeks later). my concern is as follows; if they removed the mold and smell then why would they need to add a chemical/perfume? i believe that they added this chemical to mask the fact that the mold is still present. i think that all they were able to do was overpower the stench of mold by adding this fragrance. i want the cause of the problem fixed, not just the symptoms. having mold spores blown into my face is a risk to my health and is of serious concern to all. my truck is not the only one.  view

Air conditioner makes loud grinding noise when it turns on almost every time/ turn signal sometimes turns headlights off when you use it/ paint is getting eaten away in spots all over the car all they way to the metal/ dealer has been contacted on all of these problems they said that the air conditioning is normal sounding which is a bunch of crap they just dont want to spend the time to diagnose it properly and have to fix it, lazy grease monkeys alhtough one of the shop guys is decent and is trying to help me on the paint problem through the paint protector warranty that i paid for so we will see how that goes because most of the car needs to be repainted, and the warranty co. only wanted to pay for color sanding or buffing big surprise there, just another big company trying to screw the little guy huh. well thanks for listening to me you guys do great service here, thanks.  view

Driving at night. slowed down to exit interstate, approx. 55 mph, when right rear tire blew out. was able to get control of vehicle to prevent accident. when we looked at tire, tire tread was seperated from the side wall, as described in media accounts. took tire to dealer to have it replaced. was replaced with same brand of tire. since news of problems with tires became public, we have replaced all the tires on the vehicle with a different brand of tire.l( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )  view

Recall 00v163 000/rear shock absorber: dealer unable to honor recall because no parts were available. recall notice stated at parts would be available 24 july 2000. manufacturer contacted, and informed consumer that parts were available . can nhtsa help in this matter.  view

Ea 97 007/steering shaft separation: while backing out of driveway vehicle lost control of the steering column which has disconnected from shaft joint. dealer notified, and informed consumer that this defect was not covered under manufacturer's recall. the steering wheel spun freely due to failure of the fastner for steering column and steering mechanism. the manufacturer should be made aware of this premature failure and should fix it before some one is hurt.  view

I was driving plymouth grand voyager 1991 when its transmission broke down on i95, near washington dc. i luckily parked it on left shoulder. but imagine if it would have happened on a bridge or any inclined road, then it may have caused multiple accidents. the transmission breakdown is a serious design fault in plymouth vans and it is major safety concern for all of us. so i like to know that if this complain will be heard and i will be notified for the outcome. thanks.  view

The tread from the left rear tire, which had about 12,000 miles on it, came off in the fast lane on the freeway at about 70 mph. traffic was fairly light and although we fishtailed a bit, i was able to pull off the freeway. the tires have a "rim saver" feature that allowed me to drive slowly on the remains of the tire. i have had three other failures with these tires, two of which were unexplainable. i had one additional blowout on the freeway at lower speed, but i don't know the cause of it. i spoke to firestone about these incidents and the assured me that these tires had no history of problems. at this point i'm afraid to keep driving on them. i have no faith that they will not come apart or blow out at unexpected times. whenever i drive over bumps on the road i'm afraid i have another flat. four flats in a year seems a bit excessive. when i read about firestone's problems with the atx tires, it sounded just like my problem. is this problem more widespread than is being reported? i would like these tires replaced by another manufacturer's tires.( dot number: tire size: 225/50/r16 )  view

After reading some info on the recent firestone tire problems i had the same failure a couple of years ago. i did not have an accident just some minor damage from the tire slapping the rear bumper and wheel well. i just wanted to let you know about the incident. just last month i bought another explorer with the same tires. i guess i have to get them replaced. Firestone affinity tires p215/160r15 dot w2mwaaa488 experienced vibration and were noisy, all 4 tires were cupped from the belts inside the tires, tires were pushing in the middle face of tires, firestone would not cooperate with consumer.  view

While driving would step on brake pedal and steering column will start vibrating, and brakes will take long to stop. a technician said that rotors heated up, and had been replaced.  view

Fuel cover latch was made out plastic. when consumer goes to get gasoline cap flies open. she crazy glued the latch. she has contacted the manufacturer. the owner requests the dealer to replace the plastic fuel cover latch by a metal cover latch to solve the problem.  view

Bolts holding back of front driver's seat have sheared off. this caused seat to recline backwards. driver's view would be obstructed when either accelerating or braking.  view

Pe00-020; while driving about 30 mph right rear tire started making noise. then, found out that it had a tread separation. mercury, mountainier, 1997, firestone wilderness at, p235/75/r15. consumer had tread separation twice.  view

Driver was making a left hand turn when driver was hit on the passenger's side with a hard impact that pushed vehicle into another vehicle. upon impact, side airbags for driver and passenger did not deploy, causing injuries to passenger.  view

Received flat tire last week on my leased ford exp., ford sent me to the firstone store in lake forest, (my tire was blown from the inside out and seperated, the store said there was nothing wrong with the tires and sold me another one, and never checked the tires on my truck to see if they were good, then the announcement came out. i kept the old tire,please advise if i can get new ones, i travel alot at night through the desert with my small child, it scares me. While travelling at 35-40 mph, i hit a small bump and tire blew, also these tires were sold as an all weather tire, i was assured by several audi sales people that they were and at aproximately 200 miles i had to purchase snow tires as these tires are dangerous in even a light dusting of snow. i purchased michelin alpines for snow, but, have not replaced the bridgestones for normal driving as competitive tires would be at least $800 due to the size and speed rating. Recall 97v211000/ manufacturer's recall 72803/ shoulder seat belts. consumer took vehicle in for an appointment, waited for a couple of hours & found out that dealer didn't have the part. consumer feels that when appointment was made they could have been advised that the part was out of stock.  view

Gear shift on the automatic speed control caught on fire. consumer was driving vehicle and without warning the gearshift caught on fire. please additional information.  view

Vehicle keeps stalling when trying to start up. car rumbles when it finally does start. makes a loud clunking noise when shifting gears. after i start up after a stop sign or stop light, i barely touch the gas and its off in a flash. when i am on the freeway and take my foot off the accelarator, it continues at the same speed for 5 minutes. i checked the cruise control and it was off. the engine sounds like a diesel engine every once in a while.  view

Vehicle keeps stalling when trying to start up. car rumbles when it finally does start. makes a loud clunking noise when shifting gears. after i start up after a stop sign or stop light, i barely touch the gas and its off in a flash. when i am on the freeway and take my foot off the accelarator, it continues at the same speed for 5 minutes. i checked the cruise control and it was off. the engine sounds like a diesel engine every once in a while.  view

Vehicle has expeienced excessive transmission repairs since ownership, transmission leakage and surge during operation, the transmission finally was replaced in june 2000.  view

Trunk ajar warning intermittently does not light. latch assemble replaced once, it still fails. hazardous when in heavy traffic and the trunk lid is found to be accidentally left unlatched.  view

Soon after purchasing vehicle, started smell exhaust and gas smell. dealership changed a broken exhaust bolt. same thing happen about six months later. after three or four trips for same problem, dealer changed exhaust manifold. problem resurfaced after about three years. took vehicle to another shop to have bolts change again. after about three months, problem is back again. one of my co-workers have same model with the same problem. was told by a mechanic that this is a common problem. some of the studs could not be removed. mechanic informed me that ford uses a manifold with two sets of holes because of the bolt problem. he used the second set of bolt holes only to have the bolts break off again. is there a fix or recall in effect to correct the problem. please respond.  view

Peoo 020; consumer was traveling about 70mph on freewayand there was a knocking noise coming from vehicle. he lost control, vehicle rolled twice across the highway. right tire on the passenger side tread had separated from the wheels. there were six injuries, and everyone inside of vehicle was transported to the hospital. tire size #p235/75r15/105fm+s, and #dot w2hl 1pm 105. firestone company in ohio has evaluated this tire last year, and they were aware of problem.  view

Consumer's rear right tire tread separated while going 65mph. tire size 235/75r15, and dot#vdhl018. tires had approximately 36,600 miles. no injuries. consumer will be contacting firestone.  view

The tread came off the tire and hit the wheel well. i was able to drive to the edge of the road and no other damage occured. the tire was on the rear and firestone would not even prorate the tread wear on the tire and claimed that there was no manufacturer's defect and the tire was the original equipment tire at the time of the failure.( dot number: vd______ tire size: p235/75r15 )  view

Transmission continuously "slips" out of first gear, when attempting to launch after a stop light, or shifting from reverse to first. following each and every start, the transmission will "slip" out of first gear.  view

Unknown exact dates/mileage; do not have information accessible at this time; purchased vehicle w/56,xxx miles...do not have service info prior to my purchase. have had nothing but transmission problems and more minor problems since purchase. vehicle has had all work done under warranty with exception to work performed at central dodge that was advised was covered by warranty and then picked vehicle up and service and rental charges not covered as advised. all other work performed by ozark chrysler plymouth dodge, hwy 65 & cc, ozark mo 65721 (417) 581-2776. do not know what action can be taken at this point...another reman transmission just put in this week!  view

The original equipment tires offer poor performance, especially in the rain. the car was so bad in the rain that my wife refused to drive the car. the oe tires have a treadwear rating of 520. i am afraid that the rubber is so hard (which will give long life) that grip was sacrificed. i changed the tires to continental contitouring contact ch95 which have a treadwear rating of 360. these tires are also original equipment on bmw, mercedes, volvo, audi among others. the car is much improved. wet performance is much, much better and dry performance is improved also. my wife now feels safe driving the car. i don't know if this is really a defect, but i wanted you to know. thanks. Sometimes while braking on a bumpy road the brakes release and the pedal goes to the floor. if re-applied quickly brakes will work, fortunately i was not following to close to another vehicle and was able to recover.  view

The engine blocked had a pin size hole at the rear which allow collant to escape resulting in the vehicle stalling. nlm  view

The steering has hung up (lack of power assist) turning left at slow speeds (3) times. worked o.k. after it popped. it has popped (3) other times when vehicle has been started with little or no movement of the vehicle.  view

4 firestone atx tires were bought 9/9/95 in florida (vehicle miles=58,364). i moved to colorado 10/30/95 and started driving 45 miles each way to work in march 1999 (at highway speeds). on oct. 14, 1999, the front left tire went down at 70 mph. when i replaced all 4 tires at goodyear, the manager said that the tire didn't blow out. rather the tread had separated from the tire. i didn't think anything of it at the time, but i have now!( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )  view

Sometime near the end of july 2000 i noticed the anti-lock brakes were activating on my pickup truck. i contacted gm about the problem and asked them if i could take it to liberty chevrolet in bloomsburg, pa. to have it looked at because i don't trust the service department where i leased the truck and they said go ahead. after liberty checked it out they told me the left front speed sensor was bad and would need to be replaced at my expense. i then contacted gm and they said they would pay for 75 % of the repairs. i feel this is a safety related item and should be recalled. i know gm has recalled other vehicles because of anti-lock problems. the truck is dangerous to drive. any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. thank you.  view

Pe02000; tire tread separation: while driving about 30 mph, tire on passenger's front side went flat for no reason. tire was taken to berekley tire dealership. this was a firestone, wilderness tire, original equipment. please list vin #, tire size/dot # and date of incident.  view
