German carmaker Daimler, which has joined a push to convince US motorists to drive diesel cars, said it was recalling an unspecified number to fix an engine part.
A spokesman in Stuttgart said 2007 M-Class, GL-Class and R-Class cars as well as the E 320 Bluetec model were affected.

Automakers recalled nearly 15 million vehicles for repairs at dealerships last year, the government reported Thursday, an increase of about 30 percent over 2006.
Automakers issued 588 separate recalls involving 14.5 million vehicles in 2007, or about 30 percent more vehicles than the previous year, according to data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2006, the industry recalled 11.2 million vehicles as part of 490 individual recalls.

In June 2007 a recall for thousands of Chinese Tires was ordered by The national Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) for Foreign Tire Sales Inc., due to some 450,000 steel-belted radial tires being defective. The recall was issued after it was discovered that the tires lacked a key safety feature known as a “gum Strip” which gives the tire added durability. Some of the brand names associated with the recall include Telluride, Compass, Westlake, and YKS.
