The Racing Network wants to offer NASCAR-free motorsports coverage - you game?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

The Racing Network (TRN) just put out a call to motor racing fans. Well, fans of racing other than just NASCAR. Trying to gauge public interest, they have asked visitors to vote on their very existence. The question they ask is simple, if a bit wordy: “Would you be willing to: Switch from your current cable or satellite provider to the cable or satellite provider that carries the new non-NASCAR Racing Network, or add the additional cable or satellite provider in order to watch the new non-NASCAR Racing Network?”

What they are offering is “a 24/7 racing network” that’s “devoted exclusively to the NON-NASCAR race fan.” The programming would include “thousands of hours of live, historical and first run racing as well as many weekly race magazine-style shows including weekly coverage of major domestic series, [with] behind the scenes access…”

They’re talking about coverage of Open Wheel, Drag racing, Rally, GT, Touring Car, Bike Racing (road and off road ), Karting, Vintage, Rallycross, Sports Cars, Endurance, Motocross, Supermoto, Off Road/Dirt, European Truck racing, UTE racing, Hill Climb, Porsche Cup, Desert, Speedway, Adventure, Historical, Various Club programs, (Porsche, Corvette, etc), and Various manufacturer series. Sounds super to us. If it sounds like something in which you’d be interested, visit their site by clicking the Read link below and vote. Please note, they request only one vote per household.

Thanks for the tip, Mike!

Another tragedy befalls the France family

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

by Chris Shunk

The family of former NASCAR chairman Bill France Jr. has suffered yet another tragedy only one month after the former NASCAR chief died of cancer. The husband of NASCAR executive Lesa France Kennedy died in a tragic plane crash along with another long-time NASCAR employee after their twin-engine Cesna 310 began emitting smoke in the cabin. Dr. Bruce Kennedy was attempting to land the disabled plane at Sanford-Orlando Airport but never got there, as the aircraft crashed into a house. Several people on the ground were injured or killed in the accident, which is obviously casting more pain on the France family and NASCAR.

Out of sorts: Race team’s transporter stolen, 2 cars missing

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Sorted Performance had its Speed World Challenge racing season come to an abrupt halt earlier this week when its transporter consisting of a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 4×4 dually and 48-foot Gooseneck Haulmark Edge triple axle trailer were stolen from a Hampton Inn parking lot in Livonia, MI. Team manager Ken Grammer was transporting both of the team’s Grand Touring Class Dodge SRT-4 race cars at the time, along with all the spare parts available for the cars. Today it was learned that the truck has been recovered in Detroit and sustained some damage, though not as much as the trailer, which was also found in Detroit burnt to a crisp. The two SRT-4 race cars, one driven by team owner Hal Brown and the other by current Rookie of the Year points leader Stan Wilson, are still missing. The racing community has its feelers out for the cars, as their parts are very specific and should be easy to spot should the thieves attempt to sell them.

You can view all the currently available info on the situation in this thread on the SCCA Pro Racing forums, and please keep your eyes open if you live in the Detroit area. Hopefully these two race cars can be found in good shape thanks to the collective effort of a concerned auto and racing community. Sorted Performance was looking forward to the next round of the series at the 2007 Grand Prix of Toronto. With any luck, Hal and Stan will be behind the wheels of their SRT-4s by then.

Thanks for the tip, Joe!

Kubica survives crash at 75 G

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

The boffins have broken down the data from BMW Sauber F1 driver Robert Kubica’s crash at the Montreal Grand Prix. If the shunt itself wasn’t eye-popping enough, it turns out that Kubica hit the wall nearly head on at 142.6 mph and endured a 75 G impact. And he made it out with nothing more than a slight concussion and a sprained ankle. That’s what a survival cell, crash box, HANS system, helmet, and 1,000 pieces of carbon fiber, Kevlar, metal, and honeycomb can do for you when they work perfectly. In a burst of German understatement, the BMW Sauber technical director said they were “very content about the behavior of the chassis as survival cell.” Throttle-by-wire is great, but we need a whole lot more of that kind of tech to trickle down ASAP.

AT&T fires back at NASCAR

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

by Chris Tutor

While NASCAR attempts to keep Nextel’s competitors out of the pits next season, AT&T’s keeping its cool and pressing on, business as usual.

Thumbing its big corporate nose in NASCAR’s direction, AT&T announced Monday it will continue to sponsor Richard Childress Racing through 2010. And, yes, that means they intend to keep the AT&T logo on Jeff Burton’s car. Also on Monday, Burton signed a contract extension with RCR.

The next big matchup between these two is Aug. 2, when NASCAR gets to appeal the injunction AT&T won that allows its logos to replace Cingular’s on Burton’s No. 31 ride.

Trust us, this ain’t over yet, and as several commenters pointed out, the big losers are the race fans.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. signs 5-year contract with Hendrick Motorsports

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Dale Earnhardt Jr. became the most coveted free agent in sports when he announced last month his departure from Dale Earnhardt, Inc. Today Junior announced at a press conference that he has signed a 5-year deal with Hendrick Motorsports, the current team to beat in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series with 10 wins in the last 14 races. Hendrick, however, was very fortunate that one of its four current drivers, Kyle Busch, asked to be released from his contract with the team, which opened up a spot to sign Junior. The young Earnhardt will get his wish to continue driving Chevys, though his sponsorship, paint scheme and number are yet to be determined.

Follow the link to SpeedTV for a full report on Junior’s move, and check out our gallery of the press conference below
