Volvo To Recall 1,502 S40 Sedans

Monday, February 11th, 2008

images6.jpeg

Swedish automaker Volvo will recall1,502 S40 sedans imported into China because of an electronic component rust problem, according to China’s top quality watchdog.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said that an electronic module that controlled gas flow in the fuel pump could be corroded when exposed to damp. In worst case it could cause engine stalling.

The sedans to be recalled were produced between Sep. 16, 2004 and Aug. 22, 2005. Those produced afterwards did not have the problem, AQSIQ said.

The company would replace the electronic part for free and adjust its position to eliminate potential danger.

The Romanian importer of Swedish Volvo cars, recalled in service 30 Volvo S40 and V50 models to replace some electronic modules as part of a global recall project. Company representatives said that the operation started a couple of days ago and a quarter of the requested cars were in service by now already.

The importer underlined that the operation is a preventive one and the modules will be changed even if they have a problem or not.

The recall operation is part of a global recall project announced by Volvo officials that includes some 82,000 cars produced in 2004 and 2006, models S40 and V50. Among mentioned markets that host a significant number of Volvo cars are: USA, Sweden, Germany, Japan, Canada, Russia, France.

The recall procedure is quite frequent among car producers and is considered a living proof that producers think about the safety of the drivers. Thus, the procedure will improve the models even if they are broken or not.

50,000 Recalls For The UK

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

images20.jpeg

More than 50,000 commercial vehicles were recalled in the second half of 2007, one-fifth of which were heavy trucks. Iveco was the subject of four campaigns, the largest of which affected 10,117 Eurocargos. There was a possibility that the contacts in the cab wiring loom may oxidise and cause overheating of the connector block. In the worst case scenario this might have caused a fire.

And just over 3,000 Eurocargos needed their steering column shaft checked, and if necessary replaced, in order to prevent potential steering failure. The same defect and remedy resulted in the recall of 509 Iveco Stralis trucks. The exhaust silencer bolting mounts had to be checked, and where necessary replaced, on 151 Iveco Eurotrakker and Stralis models.
A total of 3,358 Scania P- and R-Series trucks were recalled, and where necessary their track-rod end-clamp nuts and bolts were replaced. Another 1,293 other Scanias (various models) required attention to the mounting rail, which connects the 24v supply between the chassis and cab. There was a fear that it might have been incorrectly torqued, resulting in a build-up of heat.
Close to 500 Seddon Atkinsons required dealer attention because of the possibility that contacts in the cab wiring loom may oxidize and cause overheating of the connector block. In the worst case it could have resulted in a fire. A further 151 were recalled because an incorrect length of steering column shaft might have been fitted.
Volvo’s most significant recall affected 276 FMs and FHs - which required attention to prevent bolts becoming loose on their brake calliper bridges. The largest LCV recall affected LDV Maxus owners, with 21,249 returning to the dealer to rectify a possible incorrect assembly of the rear axle hub. Some 8,686 Fiat Ducatos were recalled, either to eradicate the risk of the windscreen wiper motor failing, or to prevent the steering from becoming stiff.

The company said that 38,000 units of S60, V70, XC70 and XC90 models that were manufactured in 2006 were being recalled due to faulty injector clamps that could result in diesel leaks with the potential of causing smoke or even a fire.

The list of recalled cars also includes 18,000 Volvo V70 and XC70 models from 2008 reported to have a software problem in the side impact airbag system.

The countries impacted by the recall include Britain, US, Germany, Italy and Sweden. The company said that all repairs would be performed free of charge.

Volvo recalling 42,000 XC90s

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Volvo has revealed that it’s recalling 42,000 XC90 SUVs to inspect a suspect battery switch. Only North American vehicles had this switch, which apparently creates the risk of short circuits if the jack handle comes into contact with it. Volvo seems particularly concerned that this could happen on vehicles that were serviced by technicians in such a way that the potential for a short circuit was created. The recall is only for the 2005 Volvo XC90, though. Volvo dealers will check the recalled cars and slap a sticker on them somewhere to instruct future service technicians how to avoid the risk of a short circuit. Apparently it’s a preemptive strike by Volvo, as there haven’t been any reports of short circuiting so far.
