Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Luxury automaker Porsche has started a recall of 2,561 of its Cayenne sport utility vehicles (SUV), Chinese officials said here in a circular on Tuesday.

According to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the vehicle’s fuel line came into contact with the engine block while the car was being driven, The contact could cause a knocking sound and leave abrasions on the fuel line, which could lead to fuel leaks, the circular said.

The automaker said that it would repair the fuel lines for free. The recall will last for 12 months. To date, no injuries or accidents had been reported due to the defect, it said.

Due to the problem, the automaker will recall nearly 19,000 Cayennes worldwide, according to media reports.

Porsche sales in China hit nearly 4,200 last year, up from 2,305 in 2006, said the company.

Porsche To Recall Nearly 19,000 Cayenne SUVs

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Luxury automaker Porsche AG said Monday that it has recalled nearly 19,000 of its Cayenne sport utility vehicles after it found instances of the fuel line coming into contact with the engine block while the car was being driven.

The Stuttgart-based company said the decision affected 18,856 Cayennes sold worldwide between Nov. 30, 2006 and Jan. 18.

In a statement, Porsche said that there was a possibility that movement by the engine while driving the Cayenne could cause the fuel line to make contact with the engine compartment’s cladding, or overlay, that can cause a knocking sound and leave abrasions on the fuel line.

Electrical Issues Push Porsche to Issue Recall

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

images14.jpeg

Porsche Cars North America, INC announced that they will be recalling certain models of the 2008 Porsche 911 GT3. They stated that on certain 2 door coupe vehicles, the switch console for the Porsche active suspension management (PASM) and the traction control (TC-OFF) switches was inappropriately installed. The LEDs in the switches can signal a functional change in the PASM mode or the deactivation of traction control even though the switches are not actuated.

If the traction control or active stability management system are inadvertently disabled, and the subsequent warning lamp illumination in the instrument panel on board computer is unnoticed by the driver, the safety benefits of these systems would be unavailable to the driver which could increase the possibility of a crash during aggressive driving maneuvers.

Dealers will replace the switch console free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule for this campaign. Owners may contact Porsche at 1-800-767-7243.

Porsche is recalling 128 of its 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 RS sports cars to repair switches that control traction and adjust suspensions, the company said on Tuesday.

It said the problem could lead to the two functions’ failure, although it was unaware of any cases in which this had happened.

The recall covers models made between Sept. 28 and Nov. 9 of this year, it said in a statement.

The GT3 sells for around 112,500 euros ($165,900) including tax in Germany, while the RS version costs around 135,000 euros.

Porsche 911 GT3 and GT3 RS recalled

According to What Car?, Porsche isn’t immune to the recall woes that normally plague much larger automakers. The article states that 43 911 GT3s and their harder-core RS siblings are suffering from faulty seatbelts. The optional six-point belt’s unlocking mechanism apparently won’t come loose, causing concerns that if a crash were to take place, the occupants wouldn’t be able to escape the vehicle without the belts being cut.

Porsche will be contacting the owners of said 911s to arrange a date for inspection. Unfortunately, the website What Car? referred to for further information, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), didn’t have any details about what specific models were affected and in what part of the world the vehicles were sold. As soon as we get more information, we’ll update this post.

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, often shortened to Porsche AG, or just Porsche, is a German sports car manufacturer, founded in 1931 by then Austrian Ferdinand Porsche, the engineer who also created the first Volkswagen. The company is located in Zuffenhausen, a city district of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg.

In a May 2006 survey, Porsche was awarded first place as the most prestigious automobile brand by Luxury Institute, New York; it questioned more than 500 households with a gross annual income of at least US $200,000 and a net worth of at least US $720,000. [1] The current Porsche lineup includes sports cars from the Boxster roadster to their most famous product, the 911. The Cayman is a hard top car similar to the Boxster in a slightly higher price range. The Cayenne is Porsche’s mid-size luxury SUV. The Carrera GT supercar was phased out in May 2006. Future plans include a high performance luxury saloon/sedan, the Panamera.
Porsche was awarded the 2006 J.D. Power and Associates award for highest Nameplate Initial Quality Study (IQS) of automobile brands. [2]
As a company, Porsche is known for weathering changing market conditions with great financial stability, while retaining most production in Germany during an age when most other German car manufacturers have moved at least partly to Eastern Europe or overseas.[citation needed] The headquarters and main factory are still at Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, but the Cayenne (and formerly the Carrera GT) is produced at Leipzig, in former East Germany. Most Boxster and Cayman production is outsourced to Valmet Automotive in Finland. The company has been highly successful in recent times, and indeed claims to have the highest profit per unit sold of any car company in the world, although its total profits are significantly lower than Toyota’s.[3]
Porsche has for many years offered consultancy services to various other car manufacturers. Studebaker, SEAT, Daewoo, Subaru and Yugo have consulted Porsche on engineering for their cars or engines. Porsche also helped Harley-Davidson design their new engine in their newer V-Rod motorcycle.
