Geneva Preview: Jaguar XJ out of the bag

Jaguar will be unveiling a freshened XJ at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show next week, which it hopes will help the large luxury sedan stay relevant until its replacement reportedly arrives in 2010. The changes are few and include a revised front end with a wonky new air inlet below the grille and new fog lamps in a revised front bumper. The big cat also gets XJ-style vents aft of the front wheels and a subtle wing on the rear deck. Three new colors and three new wheel designs will also be available. Inside the 2008 XJ are new seats that Jaguar claims are more comfortable and take up less space, which increases leg room for rear passengers.

The aluminum chassis remains, of course, as does the same engine lineup as the current model. AutoWeek, however, reports that the XJ will share its future engine lineup with the upcoming XF sedan. We’ve learned already that the XF will feature an intriguing engine lineup that includes a base 4.2L V8, a supercharged 4.2L V8 producing 420 hp and a supercharged 5.0L V8 producing around 500 hp in the range-topping R-badged models. So we can expect all three engines for the fully redesigned 2010 XJ, as well.

Last leg? Jaguar loses $715 million in 2006

We all know that Ford doesn’t break down the earnings (or losses) of its Premier Automotive Group, which includes Jaguar, Volvo, Land Rover and Aston Martin. Nevertheless, the Detroit News has learned just how much of an anchor the Jaguar brand was on the group’s bottom line last year. In 2006 the Jaguar brand lost $715 million. DTN also uncovered an internal memo to executives that projects the brand will lose $550 million in 2007 and another $300 million in 2008. Clearly a quick turnaround is not in the cards for Jaguar, an asset into which Ford has dumped billions and billions of dollars since its purchase back in 1989.

More ad fights!: BMW sends Jag’s tail between legs

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

In the inane world of automotive advertising, there are few things more enjoyable than a healthy bitch slapping between automakers.

We’ve seen what happens when three manufacturers enter into a pissing contest about the awards they’ve won, but this newest ad is a stellar illustration of what lax trademark enforcement abroad can create.

The ad speaks for itself, but we’ll ask you to provide a caption in “comments.”

X-Mas XJ X-tras from Jaguar

Friday, November 17th, 2006

Buy a Jaguar, get a RAZR. And an iPod. Perfect stocking stuffers that when opened and the laser engraved Jaguar logo noticed, could lead your loved one to rush outside to see the real present in the driveway. What a cute image. If it shows up in a commercial, we want royalties.

Besides the customized looks on the phone and pod, the iPod even comes pre-loaded with

Jaguar content including XKR: 90 Brand Film, XK “Attractive” TV commercial and a Jaguar history film. The phone and video/MP3 player are part of the new XJ Holiday Technology Package, which will be standard on all XJ sedans sold between November 13, 2006 and January 2, 2007.

Making the gift even better is the fact that the XJ features Jaguar’s Audio Connectivity Module, which integrates the iPod seamlessly into the car’s stereo. The now standard Bluetooth on all 2007 XJs will also allow most basic cell phone functions to be handled through the on-board vehicle controls. That includes the steering wheel buttons, audio system keypad or navi/info touchscreen.
