Jaguar releases warmed over X-type and XK range

Jaguar scraped together a few bucks to make several less-than-noteworthy changes to the XK, XKR and the X-type, and since they took the trouble of putting together press releases, we felt obligated to pass along the information to you.

The XK and its hotted-up big bro the XKR receive a revised rear spoiler, new 20-inch five spoke rollers, and an Alcon-developed braking setup that was only available on the Portfolio Special Edition. On the inside, owners that opted to wait a year will now get a choice of wood or aluminum inserts, piano black instrument and shifter surrounds, a bit more chrome, alloy pedals and an optional 525-watt Bowers & Wilkins audio arrangement.

As for the X-Type, the only visual change comes courtesy of new mesh grille and two new colors: Blue Prism and White Onyx. The model choices now consist of “S,” “SE,” “Sport Premium” and “Sovereign.”

For the Jaguar aficionados out there, you can read both press releases in their entirety after the jump and check out the high res galleries of the vehicles below.

Jaguar

Jaguar Cars Limited is a British based luxury car manufacturer, originally with headquarters in Browns Lane, Coventry, England but now at Whitley, Coventry. It was founded as SS Cars Ltd in 1922 and changed its name to Jaguar in 1945. The company has been owned by Ford since 1989.
In the past 10 years, Jaguar cars have been shown to be one of the 3 least reliable brands.[1]
Jaguar’s main competitors include Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Acura, Lexus, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.
The name is pronounced /ˈdʒægjuːə/ “jag you uh” in the UK, //ˈdʒægˌwɑɹ// “jag wahr” in the USA. The colloquial “Jag” is used in both countries.

Founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, by two motorcycle enthusiasts, William Lyons and William Walmsley, the Jaguar name first appeared on a 2.5 litre saloon in 1935. This name was given to the entire company in 1935.

The distinctive Jaguar badge
Jaguar made its name in the 1950s with a series of elegantly-styled sports cars and luxury saloons. The company bought the Daimler car company (not to be confused with Daimler-Benz), in 1960 from Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA). From the late 1960s, Daimler was used as a brand name for Jaguar’s most luxurious saloons.
Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation (BMC), the Austin-Morris combine, to form British Motor Holdings (BMH) in 1966. After merging with Leyland and Rover, the resultant company then became British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC) in 1968. Financial difficulties and the publication of the Ryder Report led to effective nationalisation in 1975 and the company became British Leyland Ltd (BL).
In 1984, Jaguar was floated off as a separate company on the stock market - one of the Thatcher government’s many privatisations. It took the Vanden Plas name with it. The Ford Motor Company made an offer to purchase the company in September 1989 which was accepted at an Extraordinary General Meeting in January 1990 and Jaguar was removed from the London Stock Exchange listings on 28 February 1990.[2] In 1999 it became part of Ford’s new Premier Automotive Group along with Aston Martin, Volvo Cars and, from 2001, Land Rover. Recent reports speculate Ford might sell Jaguar in order to infuse much needed capital into its own operations. [1]. Since Ford purchased Jaguar in 1989 it has yet to earn a profit for the Dearborn-based automaker.
Jaguar cars gained something of a reputation for unreliability during the 1970s and 1980s, however this has improved considerably in the last 20 years. Since the company has been under the Ford Motor Company umbrella, reliability and build has improved dramatically, even surpassing that of Audi and Mercedes-Benz, with the company coming 7th (out of 30) in the J. D. Power Customer Satisfaction Survey (the ‘242-million mile road test’), and the S-TYPE model coming 9th out of 105 cars in the same survey. However, nowhere has the turnaround in the quality of the cars been more obvious than in the 2003 Top Gear Survey, where the XJ8 (X308) model came first.
The company was originally located in Blackpool but moved to Coventry in 1928 to be at the heart of the British motor industry. Today, Jaguars are assembled at Castle Bromwich in Birmingham and Halewood in Liverpool. The historic Browns Lane plant closed as a vehicle assembly plant in 2005 leaving the XJ, XK and S-Type production at Castle Bromwich and the X-Type at Halewood.
Since Land Rover’s 2002 purchase by Ford, it has been closely associated with Jaguar. In many countries they share a common sales and distribution network (including shared dealerships), and some models now share components and production facilities. In September 2006 Ford also bought the rights to the Rover name and it is now part of Ford’s Premier Automotive Group.
Jaguar Cars holds Royal Warrants from both HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Charles.

Jaguar joins BMW in offering HD Radio

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

by Chris Shunk

Many radio stations have been advertising HD Radio for some time, but until now BMW has been the only volume automaker to implement the technology in production vehicles. Jaguar has decided to enter the fray, offering HD Radio as an option for the 2008 XJ. The suggested retail price is a hefty $500, but we don’t think many XJ owners will buckle at the price.

Within the radio industry, HD Radio is gaining momentum, with 1,200 AM and FM stations broadcasting with digital signals, and 550 of those stations being subscription-free, FM multicast channels. The main stumbling block for HD Radio right now is the cost of the hardware, which is why luxury automakers are the first to adopt the technology.

We got a feel for the power that is HD Radio with some of the cars in the Autoblog Garage, and we are blown away at the quality. We found the quality of the HD radio signal to be extremely clear, and the crispness of talk radio surpasses by far anything offered by XM or Sirius. Hit the jump to read Jaguar’s press release.

Geneva Preview: Jaguar XJ out of the bag

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

by John Neff
jagxjfacelift_2_560px_450.jpg
Jaguar will be unveiling a freshened XJ at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show next week, which it hopes will help the large luxury sedan stay relevant until its replacement reportedly arrives in 2010. The changes are few and include a revised front end with a wonky new air inlet below the grille and new fog lamps in a revised front bumper. The big cat also gets XJ-style vents aft of the front wheels and a subtle wing on the rear deck. Three new colors and three new wheel designs will also be available. Inside the 2008 XJ are new seats that Jaguar claims are more comfortable and take up less space, which increases leg room for rear passengers.

The aluminum chassis remains, of course, as does the same engine lineup as the current model. AutoWeek, however, reports that the XJ will share its future engine lineup with the upcoming XF sedan. We’ve learned already that the XF will feature an intriguing engine lineup that includes a base 4.2L V8, a supercharged 4.2L V8 producing 420 hp and a supercharged 5.0L V8 producing around 500 hp in the range-topping R-badged models. So we can expect all three engines for the fully redesigned 2010 XJ, as well.

Last leg? Jaguar loses $715 million in 2006

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

by John Neff
jaguar-c-xf-concept-04_450.jpg
We all know that Ford doesn’t break down the earnings (or losses) of its Premier Automotive Group, which includes Jaguar, Volvo, Land Rover and Aston Martin. Nevertheless, the Detroit News has learned just how much of an anchor the Jaguar brand was on the group’s bottom line last year. In 2006 the Jaguar brand lost $715 million. DTN also uncovered an internal memo to executives that projects the brand will lose $550 million in 2007 and another $300 million in 2008. Clearly a quick turnaround is not in the cards for Jaguar, an asset into which Ford has dumped billions and billions of dollars since its purchase back in 1989.

More ad fights!: BMW sends Jag’s tail between legs

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

by Damon Lavrinc

In the inane world of automotive advertising, there are few things more enjoyable than a healthy bitch slapping between automakers.

We’ve seen what happens when three manufacturers enter into a pissing contest about the awards they’ve won, but this newest ad is a stellar illustration of what lax trademark enforcement abroad can create.

The ad speaks for itself, but we’ll ask you to provide a caption in “comments.”
