Isuzu is recalling certain models of the 2006-2007 Isuzu NPR, NQR, GMC W3500, W4500, and Chevrolet W3500, W4500 trucks equipped with diesel engines. Diesel fuel may seep or leak from the fuel pipe at the upper or lower fuel port on the diesel fuel supply pump.

Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire. Dealers will inspect the vehicles and if no seepage or leakage is detected, the fuel pipe fittings will be tightened. If seepage or leakage is detected, the fuel supply pump will be replaced with a new one. The recall is expected to begin on or about June 30, 2008. Owners may contact Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727, GMC at 1-866-996-9463, or Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

Isuzu Motors Ltd. (いすゞ自動車株式会社 Isuzu Jidōsha Kabushiki-gaisha?), (TYO: 7202 ) is a Japanese commercial vehicle and heavy truck manufacturer company, headquartered in Tokyo. In 2005, Isuzu was the world’s largest manufacturer of medium to heavy duty trucks. It has assembly and manufacturing plants in the Japanese city of Fujisawa, as well as in the prefectures Tochigi and Hokkaidō. Isuzu is famous for producing commercial vehicles and diesel engines - it produced 16 million diesel engines in 2003 alone, which can be found in vehicles all over the world.
In most of Asia, Africa, and Europe, Isuzu is mostly known for trucks of all sizes, after Isuzu small automobile sales drastically plummeted and Isuzu had to drop all sales of sedans and compact cars in the late 1990’s. In the United States, Isuzu is mostly known for manufacturing rebadged models of Chevrolet’s Colorado as the Isuzu i290 and the Quad Cab i370, and also GMC’s Envoy has been rebadged as the Isuzu Ascender. These are currently the only compact automobile models marketed in the United States. Isuzu as a corporation has always been primarily a manufacturer of small to medium compact automobiles and commercial trucks of sizes medium duty and larger, but markets around the world show different needs. Isuzu has a contract with Budget Truck Rental to manufacture their rental trucks. This contract is also shared with Ford, GMC, and Navistar International. [1]
On November 7, 2006, Toyota acquired 5.9% of Isuzu, making them the third largest shareholder behind ITOCHU and Mitsubishi Corporation.

Toyota to sell diesel hybrid by 2010 thanks to Isuzu

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

by John Neff

AutoblogGreen has reason to be happy, having found evidence that Toyota’s recent purchase of a 5.9% stake in Isuzu will bear fruit in 2010 when the Japanese juggernaut marries its Synergy hybrid drive system with a diesel engine. Presumably such a hook up was made possible, or at least hastened, by the expertise in diesels that Isuzu brings to the table. Toyota knows its way around an oil burner too, but its Hino commercial truck division usually deals with diesels meant for trucks and buses.

Heck, even we have to admit that we’re excited for such a combo, as diesel engines excel in efficiency when cruising at highway speeds, much more so than a gasoline engine, which to this point has always been the electric motor’s dance partner in modern hybrids. JapanToday is reporting that a Toyota subcompact with this diesel hybrid drivetrain will be available as soon as 2010. Assuming we’re not all driving EVs by then, such a car should easily grab the mpg crown in the U.S.
