Chrysler Group recalling 270,000 Minivans

Friday, August 31st, 2007

The Detroit News is reporting that DaimlerChrysler has recalled 270,000 units of the 2005 Dodge Caravan and minvans to fix airbag sensors that could corrode and fail to activate. The recall, however, only affects minvans that were sold in 20 states and Washington D.C. where lots of salt is used on public roads to melt ice and snow. Apparently these UF sensors have brass bushings that may corrode from road salt and crack, allowing to water to reach the sensor, which causes it to fail and illuminate a warning light on the dash.

So if you own a 2005 Dodge Caravan and live in Florida, you’re probably safe. If you live in Buffalo, NY, however, you might want to visit your local Dodge dealer this weekend. The number of vehicles affected includes as many 270,958 minivans built from April 24, 2003 to February 2, 2005. We’ve included a list of the 20 states affected after the jump along with the recall report from the NHTSA. DaimlerChrysler will notify owners in each state and replace the brass bushings with steel ones to prevent the sensor from failing in the future. If you live in a different state than one on the list, DCX will offer you lifetime free replacement of any UF airbag sensor that fails on your minivan. If you have more questions, you can contact DCX at 1-800-853-1403.

The New Chrysler - Next 100 Years Manifesto

Monday, August 6th, 2007

New Chrysler Logo When most car companies talk about a bright future, they’re usually referring to next month’s sales forecast. We’d like to take a somewhat longer-term approach and explain why the next 1200 months look so promising to us.

In short, it means that the New Chrysler is something of a rarity in today’s automotive world: a company that’s capable of quickly responding to the needs of customers instead of the demands of the stockholders. The fact is, we’ve always believed we were the most customer-focused car company on the planet. And now that’s more true than ever.

A HISTORY OF FIRSTS. All automobile manufacturers build vehicles. But we create entirely new automotive categories. Chrysler invented the Muscle Car. The 1955 Chrysler C-300 model was America’s first “Muscle Car.” Chrysler also invented the SUV and minivan. Working with Orville Wright, we pioneered wind tunnel development and ushered in the era of modern automotive aerodynamic design. When we developed the HEMI® engine in the 1950s, the technology proved so powerful that NASCAR banned it in 1965. We also were the first to put a modern radio in an automobile. And you know how you start your car? Chrysler invented the Key-Start Ignition System.

OK, HISTORY LESSON OVER. Our present is even more impressive than our past. The Chrysler 300 continues to prove why it’s the most awarded new car ever. The legendary Jeep® lineup now features the fuel-efficient and affordable Compass and Patriot, the seven-passenger Commander, and the phenomenal four-door Wrangler Unlimited. Our 5.7L HEMI® V8 engines with MDS are once again giving drivers an unfair advantage. And the Dodge Ram pickup is unmistakable both on and off the road.

MORE LAURELS AND BENCHMARKS COMING SOON. The future is where things really get interesting. The New Chrysler is about to introduce 20 new industry-leading vehicles in the next 18 months-including the return of a legendary muscle car, the All-New Dodge Challenger. Our All-New Dodge and Chrysler minivans will amaze you with available industry-first innovations like Swivel ‘n Go™ seating and live SIRIUS Backseat TV.™ And we’re about to introduce an All-New 2008 Jeep Liberty that features a fully retractable 33″x60″ Sky Slider Roof™.

AND NOW SOME QUALITY TIME. Over the past six years, we increased productivity by an industry-leading 25% and improved our quality by more than 40%. Ram trucks, for example, have earned the status of longest-lasting and most durable line of full-size pickups in America.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS. Our concern for the environment has led to a number of firsts in green technology. Like being the first manufacturer to introduce the electric minivan, the first U.S. manufacturer to introduce CFC-free vehicles and the first car maker to sell one million Flex Fuel Vehicles. And for 2008, we expect to put another 500,000 Flex Fuel Vehicles on the road. We also offer the country’s cleanest burning diesel with the available legendry 6.7L Cummins® featuring ultra-clean emissions technology, in a full-size pickup. Then there is the 5.7L HEMI V8 engine with MDS fuel-saving technology, and even a 5.7L HEMI V8 hybrid engine coming in 2009.

A WARRANTY THAT’S AS FUTURE-ORIENTED AS WE ARE. To prove our confidence in our products, we’re now offering the industry’s best coverage: the exclusive Lifetime Powertrain Limited Warranty* that outlasts every other warranty. Just one more reason to celebrate the New Chrysler with us.

*No deductible. See dealer for a copy of the limited warranty and details. Non-Transferable. Not available on SRT, Diesel vehicles, Sprinter, Ram Chassis Cab, and certain fleet vehicles. On purchases beginning 7/26/07.

The History of Chrysler

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

240px-chrysler_logo.png

The company was founded by Walter P. Chrysler on June 6, 1925, when the Maxwell Motor Company was re-organized into the Chrysler Corporation.[2]
Walter Chrysler had originally arrived at the ailing Maxwell-Chalmers company in the early 1920s, having been hired to take over and overhaul the company’s troubled operations (just after having done a similar rescue job at the Willys car company).
In late 1923 production of the Chalmers automobile was ended. Then in January of 1924 Walter Chrysler launched the well-received Chrysler automobile. The Chrysler was a 6-cylinder automobile, designed to provide customers with an advanced, well-engineered car, but at a more affordable price than they might expect. (Elements of this car are traceable back to a prototype which was under development at Willys at the time that Chrysler was there). The Maxwell automobile was eventually dropped after its 1925 model year run, although in truth the new line of lower-priced 4-cylinder Chryslers which were then introduced for 1926 were basically Maxwells that had been re-engineered and rebranded. It was during this period that Walter Chrysler would assume presidency of the company, with the company ultimately incorporated under the Chrysler name.

LaSorda to Chrysler dealers: Whatever happens will be quick

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

by Chris Shunk
lasorda.jpg
It already seems as though Chrysler has been on the block forever, yet the juggernaut only started officially rolling a little over a month ago. To those who count on Chrysler for a paycheck, however, news of the potential sale must feel like its been going on for eons. Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda knows the situation is tough for employees and dealers, and at a meeting with the latter in Florida yesterday morning, he gave assurances that if anything happens, it will happen quickly.

The Wall St. Journal quoted one dealer as saying LaSorda “assured us it wouldn’t go on,” which must provide little relief for these dealers, if any. The way we see it, speculation of a sale has already been unofficially swirling since last fall, and if, in fact, Chrysler is sold quickly, the changeover process will take months, if not years. We’re not merger and acquisition specialists, but we’re pretty sure there is no way to tear the Band-Aid off quickly when dealing with the sale of a multibillion dollar corporation.

Back to the drawing board: DCX working on more rebuilding, more sharing

Monday, February 12th, 2007

by Chris Shunk

DCX could end up sharing more platforms going forward

Oh, how time flies when you’re paying attention to the domestic auto industry. About a year and a half ago the Chrysler 300 was selling like crazy, the Charger was off to a fast start, and analysts were saying nice things about the company from Auburn Hills. Well the 300 and Charger are still a resounding success, and life for Chrysler has taken a turn for the worse anyway. A $1.2 Billion loss in the 3rd quarter put the scare into the folks over in Stuttgart and now management and share holders are looking for more cost cutting and less payroll.

It looks like 1,000 white collar and 10,000 blue collar jobs are now on the block as a large part of the effort to remain competitive. Buyouts will likely surface soon after the announcement plans are announced, and the cost associated with the move will result in more tough quarterly financials for Chrysler. There will be tough times again in Auburn Hills, but some good news may come out of all this for customers and Chrysler employees alike.

LaSorda will take on Chrysler’s sales

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

by Alex Nunez

Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda has found someone to fill departed sales and marketing chief Joe Eberhardt’s role, and he found him by looking in the mirror. LaSorda, in addition to his responsibilities as the automaker’s chief executive, has taken on the head sales and marketing role as well.

This comes in the wake of a $1.5B 3rd-quarter loss for Chrysler and a dealer revolt spurred by the glut of 2006 product sitting on dealer lots all over the place. These were the factors that forcedlasorda.jpg Eberhardt to the exit, and LaSorda’s mission is to fix the problem by dramatically and quickly reducing the excess inventory, cutting per-vehicle costs by $1,000, and reconciling with a dealer network that had lost faith in the corporate leadership.

Last week, we reported on word that Chrysler could extend its annual holiday shutdown by two to four weeks to help keep 2007 model inventory under control. Heavy incentives are being leveraged to get rid of lingering ‘06 models as quickly as possible. Once they’re gone and the focus is put squarely back on the new 2007s, we can expect to see Chrysler dial back the incentives. Going forward, the automaker will shift to a system where they only build vehicles that dealers specifically order rather than overbuilding, which is what landed them in this mess to begin with.

The pressure’s squarely on LaSorda and his deputies to get the ship righted, and with rumors swirling about Dr. Z’s thoughts of bringing Wolfgang Bernhard back into the fold at Chrysler, there’s very little room for error.
