BMW is recalling certain models of the 2008 BMW X5 Sport Utility vehicles for problems with the rear axle stabilizer (anti sway bar). These vehicles were equipped with a sports suspension stabalizer rather than a standard suspension stabilizer on the rear axle.
In certain driving conditions, such as fast lane changes at high speed, the vehicle could experience an ‘over steer’ behavior affecting vehicle handling and control, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace the rear axle stabilizer. the recall is expected to begin during April 2008. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117 or via email to customerrelations@bmwusa.com.

BMW of North America, LLC announced that they will be recalling certain models of the 2008 BMW 550I. They stated that on certain vehicles equipped with V8 engines, in conditions of below freezing temperatures combined with low humidity, it is possible for electrostatic discharge to occur at the fuel rails. If this were to occur, the engine electronic control unit (ECU) could be affected so that engine stalling could result.
If stalling were to occur, the driver may not be able to maintain vehicle speed or accelerate and the power steering could fail increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will attach two ground cables in the engine compartment free of charge. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.

BMW Of North America, LLC announced they will be recalling certain models of the 2007 BMW X5. They stated that certain passenger vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard NO. 135, “passenger car brake systems”. The cap of the brake fluid reservoir has been designed in order to recognize a low fluid level of the hydraulic brake system by triggering a red warning lamp in the instrument cluster. A switch that is attached to this cap could malfunction at high temperatures.
If this happened, the red warning lamp in the instrument cluster would not be activated. Loss of the hydraulic brake system may cause increased stopping distances which could result in a crash.
This recall affects X5’s with the manufacturer dates of 2/5/07 through 4/30/07. Dealers will replace the brake fluid reservoir cap free of charge. The recall began on September 20, 2007. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.

BMW of North America, LLC announced that they are recalling certain models of the Mini Cooper S. BMW says on certain convertible vehicles, they fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard NO. 110 ‘Tire Selection and Rims.’ The standard requires that the tire size and corresponding tire pressure be indicated on the label and the label does not correspond to the actual tire mounted on the vehicle. As a result, incorrect tire pressure can cause premature wear and tire damage which could lead to unfavorable driving conditions increasing the risk of a crash. Owners will be provided with new tire information placards and installation instructions. At the customers option, a dealer can install the label for them. The recall covers Mini S’s with the manufacturer dates of 3.2.07 thru 8/13/07. Owners may contact Mini Cooper at 1-866-275-6464.

Okay, this is getting kind of strange. Like German rival Audi, BMW appears to be on the verge of offering a full range of CUV/SUV models to match every automotive model in their lineup. What you see in this photo (larger version over at Winding Road) is rumored to be an early test mule for an all-new model, the X4. Expected to slot in between the X3 and X5 (naturally), it looks more like a 330i Touring on ‘roids.
Christa Lehmann with Hidden Image captured this image and adds speculation that the running gear will likely be shared with the all-new X3 when that model debuts in 2010 or so. If they do share mechanicals, this X4 could debut at the same time. Not necessarily a bad idea, but the X3 and X5 already seem fairly close in size to warrant a new model between them. Who knows though, maybe this one will be just right. Click over to see the full size images, as well as a couple of renderings at WR that incorporate styling touches first seen in the upcoming X6 coupe.
