The History of Aston Martin

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Foundation
Aston Martin was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford. The two had joined forces as Bamford & Martin the previous year to sell cars made by Singer from premises in Callow Street, London where they also serviced GWK and Calthorpe vehicles. Martin raced specials at Aston Hill near Aston Clinton, and the pair decided to make their own vehicles. The first car to be named Aston Martin was created by Martin by fitting a four-cylinder Coventry-Simplex engine to the chassis of a 1908 Isotta-Fraschini.[2] They acquired premises at Henniker Place in Kensington and produced their first car in March 1915. Production could not start because of World War I, and Martin joined the Admiralty and Bamford the Royal Army Service Corps. All machinery was sold to the Sopwith Aviation Company.

Spy Shots: Aston Martin DBS caught on Autobahn

PistonHeads just posted a bunch of pics of the new Aston Martin DBS. Although the car was wearing DBRS9 badges, it’s actually believed to be the DBS that is expected to take the place of the outgoing Vanquish in the A-M lineup. The car was caught unattended after a high speed run on one of Germany’s Autobahnnen. There’s still some confusion about how the Aston-Martin range will look once the DBS and DBX join the family, but with productiion of the Vanquish coming to an end and this car going on sale in late fall, we think this Bond-ride makes sense as the Vanquish replacement, with the DBX slotting in above it.

Latest rumors have the DBS 6.0 litre V12 putting out 520-ish hp, routed through a proper six-speed stick. The car is also expected to be about 200 lbs. lighter than the current DB9 on which it is based. That should add up to the DBS being the quickest production Aston ever. Changes to the DB9 body include a carbon-fiber aero kit consisting of a revised nose, rockers and tail with integrated diffuser, carbon ceramic brakes, unique 20-inch wheels, and a suspension that has been lowered by 20mm. Several larger photos are posted on the PistonHeads site. Just click the Read link below.

Aston Martin sale imminent

Friday, December 15th, 2006

More developments are underway as to what marque within Ford’s Premier Auto Group (PAG) will be unloaded and to whom. The recent news is that more than 30 would-be investors began a bidding war for Aston Martin recently and when the dust settled, four were left standing.

Some of the investors knocked out during the process include Aston Martin CEO, Dr. Ulrich Bez, who partnered with other investors hailing from Asia. Dr. Bez and his friends were escorted out of the building along with the European business duo of Bernard Arnault and Albert Frere.

Of the four left standing, three have yet to disclose their identity publicly. The one that has been confirmed is Simon Halabi, who was born in Syria and has supposedly thrown over $1 billion into the ring.

With this much activity transpiring, we’d expect a sale to take place soon. Exactly when is another question.
