Volkswagen has announced that they are recalling certain models of the 2009 Routan vehicles for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor vehicle safety standard No. 208, “Occupant crash protection.” They stated that the owners manual was printed without the FMVSS No. 208 required information explaining that no objects should be placed over or near the air bag on the instrument panel.
Any such objects could cause injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a crash severe enough to cause the air bag to inflate. Dealers will send an owners manual insert containing the required air bag information for owners installation or dealers will install in the event the owner prefers assistance from the dealer. The recall is expected to begin before July 31st 2009. Owners may contact Volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.

There is a Chrysler recall that VW did not send to their customers that purchased the “German Engineered” Routan, but really got a Chrysler Town & Country, That cost 10,000 more, with a shorter warranty than the Chrysler. The Radiator caps on all 09 Routan mini vans need to be replaced as they are defective. I parked my new Routan with 1000 miles on it, noticed radiator fluid leaking and had the vehicle towed to the dealer, after 2 days waiting for a new cap, the problem was resolved. What would have happened if this happened on a long road trip, on a major highway. WV has no appreciation for its customers or the recall notice should have been put out as soon as the Chrysler one did. Chrysler has sent out letters to owners with their 4.0 engine. VW has not as of this date 7/9/09
