Oops! Detroit Auto Show website unveils 2008 Chevy Malibu

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

by John Neff

Apparently the folks running the 2007 North American International Auto Show website got a little confused this afternoon. They published the exact same info every other automotive news site did that was supposed to accompany a teaser shot of the 2008 Chevy Malibu’s front end. Unfortunately for them, however, they published a shot of the whole car, which allows us to unceremoniously introduce to you the new mid-size sedan from Chevy that was supposed to knock our socks off in Detroit next month. The picture’s a bit small and honestly doesn’t reveal anything we couldn’t have cobbled together in our heads from spy shots and the officially provided teaser pic, but GM is no doubt up in arms over the transgression.

With the whole car in focus now, we’ll offer a big thumbs up as our first impression. The front end is very distinct and American, the sides are completely clean and devoid of ornamentation or rub strips, the subtle fender flares are effective and the sloping rear deck all combine in a way to make us completely forget the last generation Malibu ever happened. And that’s a good thing.

Whoa, Nellie: GM reigning in production at 3 SUV plants

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

by Scott Davis

With the sales of the new GMT900 platform SUV’s still strong, GM is looking ahead to assure that future inventory doesn’t overrun demand as it has in the recent past. The company announced today that it will be reducing production in three plants that produce the GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade, and Chevrolet Tahoe from 56.5 vehicles per hour to a nice even 50. The plants will remain closed for the first half of January, extending the normal 1-week holiday shutdown to three, and then resume production at the reduced rate.

GM expects some staffing adjustments to occur, but has not yet determined how the slow down will affect employees at each assembly plant, which are located in Janesville, WI, Arlington, TX, and Silao, Mexico.

GM SEMA Showcase #3: The Buicks

Monday, December 18th, 2006

Wow, GM’s bringing so many Buicks to SEMA, we’re giving them a showcase post all their own. Hell bent on getting the message across that the Buick brand isn’t just for Sansabelt-wearing retirees anymore, the General has dispatched — count ‘em — eleven Lucernes prepared by different customizers. We’re still wrapping our heads arounf the idea of Buick being modded this way. Some of the cars fare better than others, but the point of the exercise is to show what the Lucerne looks like when taken in directions you wouldn’t normally associate with Buick. Mission accomplished.

gmcars-22.jpg

The best Buick at SEMA may well be a throwback, however, as the ‘64 Electra 225 convertible (above) that will lead the pack of Lucernes headed to SEMA. Fully restored and looking bone stock save for the chromed 20″ Boss Motorsports wheels filling the cutouts. Looks, however, can be very decieving, as this Electra is anything but stock underhood, where a GM Performance Parts ZZ572 crate engine resides. Its 620 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque are more than enough to give the white ragtop a distinct advantage at any stoplight grand prix.

So, now that you’ve been briefed, check out all the cars and their associated press materials after the jump.
